The woman jumped from the helicopter at night and the next morning was Charlie’s death scare. The person was already on the island, so Desmond saving Charlie or not wouldn’t have changed who jumped from the helicopter. (I don’t know why he assumed it was Penny, she’s not Rambo, she wouldn’t do these missions herself. She’d pay people to do that stuff)
If Desmond had done anything different, if he hadn’t have told Charlie to come, Charlie would have drowned or get struck by lightning or attacked by a boar or something while Desmond, Hurley & Jin are away.
