- CSX manifest Q616-18 was extremely long and had particularly interesting loads: Brand new M1 Abrams tanks for the Middle East. In this video, we follow the train from Hull GA to Carlton GA. The defect detector in Carlton at MP 484.6 will tell us strange details about the length of the train... [© 2016 MBMARS Productions. Exclusive rights for RUclips channel "mbmars01" only.]
Good job, great videography. You told a great story. Some folks just show a locomotive and some rail cars (which can be interesting sometimes) but to tell a story that's the ticket.
Yeah, providing a few more details puts it all into a broader context. I know that some people research the places I went to and "follow" the trains on the map. That's nice!
Again, nice video. DD got happy counting axles and added one more.....lol!!!!!!!! Those have to be some of the best engineers down on that end of the line out of Atlanta with all the hogbacks and stuff. With a train this long and I know it was heavy, that engineer probably drank a 6 pack before knocking out from being mentally tired with this train. Keep up the good work on your videos.........getting better and better. Maybe one day I can get down to Monroe, NC and catch these same trains as you do.
Thank you! Yeah, I think they know what they're doing. This train has always priority. It's not supposed to stop at all, but that doesn't always work. However, starting up again after a stop bears the potential risk of a knuckle break. Well, this train is notorious for exactly this to happen.
Excellent video! You're becoming my favorite train video producer!
Keep up the good work!
Awesome! Thank you.

Bear Cat i second that!!!!!.the best.a rail fans dream..😀💚💜💙
MBMars01, I'm so glad you cover my old trainspotting territory of GA/SC 72. Drove that way to and from UGA back in the 1980's. Excellent rail traffic. Also, I told you in a past post that mile points were to Petersburg, VA. The mile points are from the sold Seaboard Airline RR and are from the former terminal in Richmond, VA. Nice work you do!
Thank you so much! Yes, I remember that you told me about the old SAL mileposts. I wish I knew more about the history and the traffic changes over the last decades. It seems, momentarily there is a low (the trains density shown in my videos is absolutely misleading!), but it's changing all the time.

cool. awesome catch. sweet catch of the Military train. dang Q616-18 is huge. love it. 799 Axles on this train sweet.
Yeah, 799 was a joke by the detector, 798 is the correct number. I don't know how this could happen.
mbmars01 very cool. awesome.
That's all one train! No wonder it had DPU right in the middle of the train. 19 tanks at 62 tons 1,178 ton alone not to mention the rest of the train with its bulk grain, steel coils, lumber and who knows what in those boxcars, auto racks and the what else. Nice video I'd give it a thumbs up. By the way that's a company of tanks minus any support vehicles. I was never in a armored company, I was in armored cavalry and if this had been such you would have seen less tanks. You have seen more Bradley armored fighting vehicles along with an infantry squad and a mortar squad as well as all the support vehicles that were track or off road only vehicles. There would have been much more than 19 tanks. You say these are bound for the Middle East, I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't bound for Anniston Army Depot for rebuild or upgrade.
It was certainly one of the longest trains I have ever seen.
Again, awesome footage. Love reading the story that goes along with the video. Thanks.
Thanks so much!
I enjoy all your train video's. Thanks for sharing
Great, thank you!
See those length of trains reminds me of the ones I would see crossing Donner Pass. It was a daily sight to see four or five of those from when I worked at The Historic Truckee Hotel.
Yeah that must be an awesome location. It's on my list. One day hopefully...
Korean War
Had a CSX pass through my town 2 days ago carrying Bradley Fighting Vehicles, headed East Bound on BNSF Tracks. Had no camera, but I counted 65 cars. 4 Locomotives involved 2 up front, one in the middle and one on the end, I live in SW Iowa
Wow, a DPU in the middle and at the end? That's cool, I've never seen this.
excellent video i love trains they are so awesome your videos are the best
Oh, thank you. There are also other railfans who create awesome content, but I'm very happy that you particularly like the videos on this channel =)
Rare catch! We are lucky you were out there! Some cool graffiti too. Nicer color palettes than designs overall. I did like the design at 13:58, although color was a bit conservative for my taste. LOL
Haha, that sounds funny! I'm glad I was out there, too :) I shouldn't say that but graffiti, if well done, can be an entertaining addition to the train shows for a railfan.
Another cool video!
Thanks!
Awesome video. I love seeing those long trains.
Thanks!
fantastic catch,military equipment is fascinating!
Thank you! Yep, that's right.
I see it often on some of the winder Georgia trains, probably going to the national base there
you will laugh at this one I posted the comment of this video on the wrong one. Thanks for you video I appreciate it. 799 axles at the mile post detector how did it come up with that number. I like your chase scenes glad you chased this one. I thought you had special equipment for the chase found out you do not found that on another video. I really appreciate your work when I read that. I'm surprised CSX does not have a DPU on the end wit such a large train. Thanks again for everything.
No, I have no special equipment. It's just the ordinary camcorder I almost always use. I wouldn't be able to get the best scenes if I had to operate more complex equipment. Thank you, I'm glad you keep watching these vids.
Wow, cool video! 👍🏻
Great, thank you!
19 M1A2 Abrams, 136 tons on those flat cars. You sure know how to pick military trains. And DPU too.
Well, this was a lucky catch.
Such a super long train
Excellent video!!!
Thank you very much!
A good catch, enjoyed it.
Thanks!
191 cars? he must get paid more then the other engineers ive been watching your vidsfor like a year now and this the first time seeing a lot of freights
It was definitely one of the longest, but there is also a video with a 200+ car train on the Abbville on my channel.
mbmars01 dang some engineers are lucky too have a 30 car train or 50
Those M1s belong to the Saudia Arabian Army, they're the only one Middle East country that afford them. 11,098 ft is long train, but normal for up here in Maritime Canada on the run from Toronto to Halifax, CN usually uses 2 leads and a DPU half way back. Thanks for the video.
For here it's getting more common to have these overlong trains on this line, too, but it's not desirable. Not a single siding can fit trains longer than 10,000 ft on the entire subdivision. This easily causes logistical issues. Also, the up-and-down topography of the line often leads to breakdowns and train separation. Thank you for watching!
I was wrong about the tanks just being Saudia Arabian, Egypt, Iraq, Kuwait and Morocco also have them and they all using those markings.
Do you know what this marking means and what is beneath the tape below the marking?
Some kind of exhaust vent that gets really hot, probably for the computers on board. It would have tp be closable from the inside since the U.S. Marines use their M1s in deep water when doing beach assaults.
Ah okay, thank you!
Johnathan Burnett happy birthday
nice video thats alot of cars on one train
Oh yes! Thanks.
Tanks for that...
wow that train was huge those military tanks was neat never seen nothing like that can trains travel out of the country
Mixed freight trains typically travel rather short distances from yard to yard. Q616 is assembled in CSX's Tilford Yard in Atlanta GA and decomposed in the CSX yard in Hamlet NC. There, the cars are distributed on other trains. I'm curious as to where the flatcars with the tanks will go to. Since they need to be shipped overseas, it must be a port, but which?
No bumper numbers or unit ID, nice new paint jobs too and track pads.
How many axels is that train 0-0
How are you able to track the trains and know which ones are coming
Most of the time specific information is sparse; part of the excitement is to visit a rail line and not to know what to expect. However, even freight trains follow some sort of schedule and after a while one has a feeling for which trains could be expected to show up at certain times.
@@mbmars01 ah ok l see l was just wondering because l wasn't sure if they had web site to track them or if you would just have to use the radio
@@darrylclay2105 One mostly has to rely on the radio.
The crossing gate near the defect detector must have been installed very recently -- it doesn't show up in 2014 Google Maps street views.
You're awesome! That's true, CSX installed several crossing gates in that area rather recently (I think in the last year).
Powerful exhibition of rail transportation system. Wondering of the Abrams hardware came from Anniston Army Depot or elsewhere.
I don't know where they came from. They looked pretty new to me.
May be part of USDOD Foreign Military Sales program.
Great vid! I enjoy the saga of Q616 and broken knuckles. How many cars this time?
Thank you! Answer at the end of the video lol.
+mbmars01 lol it would help. Saw the tanks and i was busy. Keep up the Q616 series haha
Not a problem. Thanks for watching anyway :) Haha, let's see what comes next. Yesterday, there was an emergency of Q667. This caused some weird CSX actions, but more about this soon...
Nice catch. I'm guessing that with the engine in the middle it had over 200 cars.
Was just wondering the same.cept im just curious.why thiers an engine ridin along with the cargo.you think it.d be up behind the others.unless coz it.s a military train.thiers secret info hidden in it.thats why its there.i mean.idk.im just sayin.🚂🚂🚂😕
A locomotive that is in the middle of the train or in the rear is called a DPU (distributed power unit)
did they ever get mr mk lawson to answer his radio?
Lol, they sure did :)
Wow 616 actually made a trip without breaking a knuckle lol.
Lol.
how long is a TC in America, and how many of them does a monster train like this one does it light up. also I have never seen an engine in the middle of a train; is this a normal configuration in the states.
The train lengths vary greatly, from short local trains that serve industries and have only a few cars to very long "through trains" which can have 200 and more cars. The engine in the middle or rear is called DPU (distributed power unit) and is typically added, where the topography of the railroad line might potentially cause a separation of a train (the distributed power helps to balance the stress on the knuckles). It is not uncommon that long trains have DPUs, but most trains don't have one.
+mbmars01 ક
No markings, could be headed to the Depot in LA, or JRTC In Cali.
wow...you weren't kidding! How is the center power unit controlled?? Always wondered.
The DPU is controlled remotely by the engineer in the lead engine - I'd guess in a similar way as trailing engines are controlled.
ok cool! I thought that was it but wasn't sure.

How many cars?
Please tell me that box car isn't a buffer car between the locomotives and the "tank cars"...
(I enjoy your work mbmars01)
I have no idea whether or not it serves as a buffer for some reason. - Thank you, this is gratefully received!
Woah, that's over two miles!
I know, it's crazy!
Very sad that Q616 was abolished... But one question comes to my mind: what happened to all the traffic from Atlanta to Hamlet? Q616 was usually very long, where did all those freight cars disappear?
Well, good question... But since the hump yard in Atlanta was closed, much less traffic needs to be routed through there, so trains to Hamlet can take other routes that do not include Atlanta.
Yeah, I forgot the Atlanta hump yard was closed... Now it makes sense.
Mr Mistr Productions mo on
Really? Does that mean we won't be able to watch Q616 anymore?
Meant to mention, I believe that only the 6 axle (or more) tank cars are coming to an end due to volume limits. Other type cars are continuing to be manufactured with much better engineering. I think giant tank cars were doomed from day one as too dangerous. Others were just ahead of their time in terms of axle design.
Oh okay, I have no clue about these developments. I have already seen very large, modern-looking tank cars with 4 axles. The central axle in 3-axle trucks might be a bit of an issue in tight curves.
3:41 I hate to be "That guy" But what type of tanker car is that, usually it's just, a solid color and not striped, again, i'm not trying to be "That guy" Cheers, Hunter
Your basic armored company or cavalry troop and a whole trainload of just about everything else. I live next to UP's mainline between chicago and the coast so we see a lot of the US Army going back and forth. They don't look finished yet so they're probably on their way to either Texas or California for final refitting.
These were brand new tanks and destined to the Middle East, maybe Saudi Arabia. I don't think the US Army has anything to do with it. Also, the train went north to the Carolinas.
Maybe headed to Fort Knox-there's an armored div. there. I read where the Abrahms is being upgraded with new software and fire control systems-which explains the number and length of some of the trains passing my front door. Lots of Bradleys, too. Oh, and definitely army transport. Note the DODX on those flatcars-that denotes Department of Defense. I note the .50cal haven't been mounted to the turrets yet along with a bunch of ancillary antennas and such....a work in progress by all accounts.
mbmars01 the us department of the army a good
The length of that train is ridiculous!
Yeah, sad but true.
All about those dollar bills. Made for a great video considering the large variety of rolling stock on display though.
Your videos are awesome, keep up the good work my friend.
Thank you! I'll do...
why was it going slow there at one point?
danny haley the train was probably in a curve farther back and they had to get through it before they could pick up their speed.
nice job.....those are some big tanks...wow
Thanks!
That was awesome.
Glad you liked it! :)
Man you have been filming ALLOT of DOD hardware moving over this line.
But I have missed a lot of other cool stuff recently, helicopters and such things.
They weren't going to the middle East. They were going to Fort Stewart, from the Anniston Army Depot, in Anniston, AL. If it had been a military train, it would have been all military equipment, not a mixed load.
I show the markings in the video, which are Arabic. I don't think the US Army is communicating in Arabic language nowadays lol. Fort Stewart is an unlikely destination to begin with, because the train went north from Atlanta, GA to Hamlet, NC on the Abbeville Sub.
mbmars01 ever seen a military division deploy? Ever seen them send their vehicles and equipment? It's long trains that go to the nearest port to be loaded on a ship.
I don't get your point. These were presumably factory-new tanks on their way to the customer, which I assume, based on the markings, was located in the middle east, but that's speculation, of course. It wasn't a military train, just mixed freight.
come out west and see really long trains
No, we can see long train in the south and East too. Stay on your filthy West.
nice man
Thx :)
Now that was a Beast!
a lot of those cars must have been empty for only three engines to pull that
대한민국에서 시청하고 있음니다
That's awesome!
trains like this create alot of jobs.
M1A1 Abrams tanks! Awesome!
M1A2
Wow that is some freight train.
Yep, it really was.
I'm surprised they let u get to near them and film them
Impressionante, o tamanho do trem! 😳🇺🇸😳🇺🇸😳
Thanks!
I wonder how many railcars only 1 locomotive can pull up to?
It depends on many factors (like the terrain and horsepower of the engine, traction effort), but a 4400 hp engine can certainly get 50-60 loaded boxcars rolling in a flat area.
Pause at 12:07 😂😂😂😂 look whoever wrote on that train car
That is quite a lot of military tanks on that train. Why does the U.S. Army need to load their tanks onto trains when they can load them up onto large military cargo airplanes?
A C5 galaxy can only carry one or two at a time
A military cargo plane would have to make numerous trips and cost per hour of operation is extremely high for such large aircraft. Its more cost and time efficient to send them on trains
eventually they are going to put a train together thats so long, the engine will be pulling into point B before the last car has left point A lol
Lol.
Why do you have so many 3-5 seconds clip?? This gets boring, so much that I might just go to another site. M.S.
Such length it shows countries militaries power.
Absolutely!
👍🏻👍🏻
In a word. "WOW"
Lol :)
I don't know why we don't see DPUs in our area? Maybe the don't build trains that long.
It also depends on the terrain. The Abbeville Sub is rather hilly and a DPUs allow for a better distribution of pulling and pushing forces along the train.
DPU's also help with braking air pressure build-up and recovery in instances of a very long consist. Ontario, Canada , 2017/12/01.
Nice!
Thanks!
That is a massive long train.
OK. only 191 cars.
Still a lot, particularly given the topography of this line.
+mbmars01 Check out my latest video. CSX DPU mixed freight Oakfield Drive.
+mbmars01 It has around 230 cars.
Cool, just watched it. Which line is this?
+mbmars01 It's CSX Through the Florida Panhandle is all I can tell you.
You're right I was wrong. They are probably destined for either Egypt or Saudi Arabia maybe even Jordan or Iraq.
Well, I only speculated. The arabic letters and that the tanks looked brand new made me wonder what their destination could be.
or Korea, Poland, Germany, or wherever the unit they belong to is conducting training exercises. These trains are the most efficient way and standard practice for transporting these vehicles to the respective ports and air fields for shipping.
Total length of the Train has yet not been told in this video. It's a great regret.
The length is mentioned at the end of the video!

11,908 feet. I'm sorry, it was my mistake. I didn't notice it & I blamed you. I apologise. O, by the way... It was an excellent videography.
OMG! It was 2.2253 miles. Guinness where are you?
Lol, yes, this was a particularly long one, but train lengths of a mile or more are not uncommon.

I'm the citizen of a small country. Such a train requires a huge platform. Anyway, the video is awesome.

That's right, lots of trust everywhere: in mideast countries, in Q616, and who knows what else.
LOL! Trust-- yeah right...
need some graffiti on them abrams,a true flavor of americana!
Just because someone stenciled Arabic on the hull of a tank means nothing. As I said, if it were a military train, it would have been all military equipment. There are no unit designation, or bumper numbers.
Nobody claimed this was a military train. It was Q616, an ordinary manifest from Atlanta to Hamlet.

Must be troops no longer ride with their equipment anymore
