I miss the ability to play older formats. I was in a very rural area so haymaker was just a rumor for our group. No one had the means to acquire that many specific cards. This is literally a dream to 11 year old me.
You can play online through fan servers and web cam tournaments
I played this meta lol, I was a big fan of teching chancey for suprise OHKOs and tanking hits. I really miss how the game was, of course it has its issues. Growing up during 1999 and waiting in 1-2 hour line around the mall for packs, with my firneds hearing the packs crack open along the way with people screaming about what they got was so magical and a experience I'll never forget.
I remember this, the first theme deck i ever bought was the one with ivysaur, and as a 3rd grader, we took hours to finish a game, mannn I miss those days, too. Last time I played comp was 2012, not I'm trying again when Covid is over. Wish me luck!
This is how I was with Yugioh back in 2005. I didn't get int ptcg until recently.
Imagine opening a black lotus from a pack in 1994
Aahhh nostalgia. I played a lot of Haymaker, which won me tons of games at the ol local pokemon league. Everything was just great until that one kid showed up and led on a squirtle. After that I was hooked. Raindance all day everyday.
"I've heard Haymaker mirror is like watching paint dry" It is, lmao
i order all cards for anothe haymaker deck (90€) ... so my friend and i can make mirror match ...cant wait for it
Where are you ordering from? For 90€?
@@PopcornMax179 i order from TCG market... from 3-4 peopöe to get all 60 cards
I still play with my buddies some base to gym pokemon. We ban super energy removal which makes a bunch of decks playable. Its the best way to play with the old wotc cards. Love it. Also Ohio represent. I find myself ordering 30 bills and energy removals from you guys often lol
IMO Base-Neo is by far the most fun, diverse and healthiest way to play with the wotc cards. (Obviously you have to errata/ ban Slowking - the way it was intended). I agree if you play in older formats its way better to ban Super NRG removal and Oak to get those fun "Evolution matters" games. :)
@@Winterhe4rt yeah neo would be cool too. I think we liked the idea of just the gen 1 pokemon so we stopped before neo. Both are good though. Venuchar is fun to play when snrg removal is out. None of us play any of the really good decks either. Ive got eeveelution, machamp/hitmonchan, zapdos/raichu, blastoise with lapras, alakazam/gyarados(only real deck) dark charizard, dark alakazam/haunter, dragonite, poliwrath/dewgong, venuchar, and a moltres/magmar/lickitung. Its alot of fun honestly. Games are really damn long too which is cool. Oak is limited to 2 max. Super energy removal is banned. Thats the only rule lol.
I haven't played this game in soooo long! I loved going to the local gym and playing in the tournaments. This is absolute nostalgia goodness.
I’m sure you have loads of people to appease, and I’m only 1 person, but I REALLY REALLY love watching these old base-jungle battles. Plzzzzzz keep them going!
I was 8 when this deck was super popular
Great video Andrew keep up all the great work. I’m am building my first deck and am about to get all the needed cards. You inspired me to do it thanks man
JFry what’s the deck?
I like Jigglypuff games zacian v
Ironic. When all the trainer cards are busted, they balance themselves. You discard to draw but you're throwing away powerful cards to draw other powerful cards. Or you're going to mill yourself.
Man these retro vids are great! I wish there was a way to play the old school decks on PTCGO..
The good old days...
Thank U Andrew for this great stuff, keep up doing these BaseSet-format matches, pls! :)) Cheers!
Scyther was a red herring. Jungle's real answer to the original Haymaker was Cubone. With its one-colorless-energy attack, Hitmonchan (let alone Electabuzz) needs to bend over backward to KO it. Your deck's easiest way to get rid of it is Scyther, which needs at least two energy cards for that, which would give Cubone's owner the opportunity to use ER or search for a different staller. Do you think you'd be able to play a Base-Jungle match of Haymaker against a version of Klaczynski's Rain Dance that uses Cubone and ER instead of Magikarp and Gyarados?
jungle brought scyther, clefable, and... wigglytuff! the wiggly was supposed to destroy haymaker, but became a much greater evil!
I actually had this exact deck back in the day. The local Hobby Town would have tournaments every weekend and I would win every weekend. It was easy money.
Electabuzz is the original Vampire Nighthawk of Pokemon :P
Definitely an awesome format
Old school man
I had this deck! Used to go to the WotC store in the mall and battle other trainers
When you refer to these cards to MTG you know something was right.
itemfinder almost always gets either an oak, a CPU search, or that one situational card like gust/scoop up that makes a play. IF discards your hand, so you need to reload it. just play for card advantage and you cant go wrong
@Tricky Gym PLEASE READ THIS!
ive really enjoyed this video but i feel we need to make a Classic format but i need the help of a top pokemon youtuber, YOU can make it happen by just gathering your subs and fans of your work, i feel if we use a thier party app like MWS(magic work station) we can make that format happen and form leagues around it.
Personally Base-Team Rocket seems perfect but i think using the list from Pokemon TCG 2:"here comes team rocket" on Gameboy would be best, but i hope you read this or others and we can get a format made and hopefully popular.
I was able to print fake copies of these old school cards and it works just fine, love playing these old formats but not going to waste money on the real cards
Mahone, amazing match, for sur I will watch this in like, 3x... but thanks for the uploading!
The first BDIF
Hey Andrew just to double check - I play the game boy colour game quite alot and plus power and defender both impact 'self damage' as well so if when you flip tails on Thunderpunch with a plus power you're doing 20 damage to yourself. At least that's the ruling on the official Gameboy game. By far my favourite format of all time and forever ;)
The official ruling was PlusPower only added damage to the defending pokemon (i.e. the pokemon receiving the attack), it was answered by WotC in an official forum. The game boy was programmed differently on that particular interaction, leading to the confusion.
@@nicomaturana497 I guess 'defending' gives that away now that I think about it. Makes sense.
I love this format so much. Do you ever play alakazam/chansey?
I used to play a version with fossil magmar instead of hitmochan cause the lack of them on my city. ( Latinoamérica issues) Also used an Aerodactyl line for the evolutions decks around. (Raindance)
ooomg...more of this pls
Psych, just saw your damage swap video. Lol!!!!
Andrew, where do you get your play mats?
You should stream a casual speedrun of pokemon trading card game for gameboy one of these days
I think Promo Mewto, Electrabuz and Scyther could be als a strong deck.
Both you guys used Itemfinder for Bill but never looked for the Bill in deck to remove it...you just said "For Bill" and drew 2 cards lmao
Itemfinder pulls bill from the discard pile, not the deck.
I wonder what the base set to fossil era would be like if energy removal, super energy removal and lass were banned. I wonder if that would make some of the less viable cards more viable like base set Charizard, Machamp, Venusaur, Poliwrath, Nidoking/Nidoqueen, etc.
prolly not. wiggly variants just too strong... I didnt see a pluspower played once? too much killing power with even things like Gust of wind being brutal. including fossil means aerodactyl, and that just favors hay makers more
I know you are probally not going to respond but why not remove 1 lightning and 1 fighting energy, and stick in 2 grass, i know it wont happen often but you can sometimes set up a swords dance.
i mean, you play 2 DCE. So, if you want to use the combo, you need the grass energy(you play 2 copies), a dce (you play 2 copies) and a scyther (you play 2 copies), and you have to use swords dance and hope your opponent doesnt have energy removal. to make it short, having a dce and a grass energy is just something that doesnt happen in haymaker decks, though there are some variations (like the rapidash version) that play 4 dce, and then playing grass energys can be fine.
Can we see a Charizard deck fight something else? Preferable not too many super effective hits so it's more fair.
Charizard decks are REALLY hard to set up though, since Energy Burn is a power that only works in the Active unlike Blasty and Venus who can use theirs anywhere. Combined with the frequency of (Super) Energy Removal and you would be lucky to get one Fire Spin off in the game. When even the official WotC TCG guide for Team Rocket brings up how Dark Charizard is a far better option for battle in every way you know something is up hahaha.
I've played Base-Fossil recently and black star Mewtwo utterly warps the format. Power crept Hitmonchan. Much faster games on average (which some people may like)
all hay makers played hitmon, electabuzz, and movie mewtwo from the very first tournament. he synergizes with SER, just a good cars
Where I can find this decklist?
haymaker? i hardly know her!
List?
If you can attack turn one, can you evolve turn one or no?
Like, what other rules are different? I saw that super energy removal hit two DCEs too
Super Energy Removal hits two *_cards,_* which is why it can take out a DCE.
As for the turn one, you can do anything on turn one EXCEPT evolve. The reason is because you still can't evolve a pokémon you just played. It's turn one, so duh, you *_just_* played it.
how expensive would it be to get an old deck like this? or let´s say i want some fun "kitchen table" decks. is there a ideal format for this that´s also inexpensive?
i order some cards to make this decks... muk/mewto with computer search....itemfinder etc..... i paid ca. 40-60 €
I have a cube of the OG 150, all base-Jungle. I think that's a great way to keep a small, nostalgic, playable collection that offers a lot more versatility than just like a few decks laying around. We usually draft colors, and then grid draft trainers from there. Very fun times. 😊😊😊
i recently bought 2 haymaker decks, and i paid around 60€.
Wait was bill a supporter or an item?
No supporters existed, so Bill and Professor Oak were basically modern day Items
@@blu3cheesecake978 So you had sycamore/Profs research as an item card??
PumkinSwift yep :)
Yeh back then Pokemon cards were weak and Trainer were busted. As someone who only played until maybe 2002, it is funny to see the new pokemon cards... I saw a butterfree that deals 150... a freaking butterfree! Back then the most life any pokemon would have was 120, and it was a lot! Any pokemon that bashed 20 for 1 energy was good already 😅😅
