    Those who are getting grub install error, do one thing aditionally create a efi file of 100mb while creating portion in root directory.
    Everything works fine for my hp laptop. It's been 2 days since I tried to install ubuntu while windows 11 on dual boot mode with ssd and hdd side by side.
    This guy's video worked but I had to create a efi file before creating root. It works fine for me.

      Thanks for sharing that, Pritam. Usually, Windows should already have the EFI partition (ESP). This is why I didn't mention to create it explicitely.

    Does it stand true for Linux mint also?

    Thank you for this video. I have purchased a new laptop which has a 250 GB SSD (disk 1) and a 1TB HDD (disk 0). The laptop is preinstalled with Windows 10 in the SSD. I want to Install Ubuntu (I prefer 18.04 LTS) in the HDD (disk 0). My plan is to make two ntfs partitions (say D and E drive) of 500 GB for windows OS in HDD and make an unallocated space of 500 GB in the HDD where I will install the Ubuntu (root and home in the HDD). Actually I do not want to disturb the C drive (or SSD). Will there be any issue after installing Ubuntu on the HDD? I am a bit worried whether, after finishing installation, I will be able to see the black/purple grub screen with the option to boot into Ubuntu and Windows. Could you please answer/explain me . Best regards.

    • @Itsfoss

      Hmm... that's too small a space for both Windows and Ubuntu to function properly. I mean Windows itself will take 25-30 GB. You may try creating an additional /boot partition for Linux with 6-8 GB of space on SSD. Keep / and home on HDD. I haven't tried it myself but this should give you some boost while booting Linux.

      Probably the ESP partition was not updated during Ubuntu installation or perhaps it created another ESP partition.
      To figure out, check the disk partitions. See if there are more than one ESP partitions.
      Also, go to BIOS settings and see if you can see Ubuntu/Linux boot option. Try booting it and see if the GRUB only shows Ubuntu or it also shows Windows.

    Do we have to deal with swap on Linux Mint? Or is it the same?

    Hi I am new to this dual booting thing, Some other tutorial I read stated that I need to create a /boot partition as well but your video doesn't create a /boot partition so now I am a bit confused, Can you explain why you don't create a boot partition? Again sorry if this is a silly question.

    • @eduardozenteno417
      @eduardozenteno417 2 года назад

      He doesn't create a boot partition because he uses the EFI partition windows already has in sda1. This replaces windows boot manager by linux's grub.
      IN THEORY, there's nothing wrong with this. But, in some cases, windows may update and mess up linux grub. This is easily solved using the terminal, but if you are new to this kind of things, ir may give you a scare.
      To avoid those problems, it is advised to create a boot partition (or an EFI partition) in sdb and installing the bootloader there. Doing so would prevent windows from messing up linux grub.

      It's the same with Kali, too. You may have a dedicated Swap if you want.

    In my case, I've already dual boot on a single SSD, then I want to upgrade my laptop by adding HDD, now how can I configure that. (SSD for is, and HDD for storing data is common sense)

    • @Itsfoss
      @Itsfoss  3 года назад +1

      You want the HDD to be for data storage only and use it between the two operating systems? You can go to Windows and add the HDD as NTFS partition.
      Now, you should be able to access this NTFS partition from Linux as well. You'll have to do special effort for auto mounting it though.

    I may sound super dumb in this section but here it goes:
    I am buying a 1TB SSD and my laptop already has 1 tb HDD. What i want is, to install linux on SSD completely, but also to be able to install some of windows programs on it.
    Do you think this is possible and should I do it?

    • @Itsfoss
      @Itsfoss  2 года назад +1

      You mean you want SSD to be shared by both Linux and Windows, right?
      Yes, that's totally possible and since you have 1 TB SSD, that's the suggested way.
      Start installing Ubuntu. If it gives the option to install Ubuntu alongside WIndows choose it and see if it is trying to install on SSD or not.
      If not, abort the installation, go to the WIndows and make some free space on the SSD where you'll be installing Linux.
      Start the installation again, this time, go for 'something else' option. Use the free space you had created and use it to mount as root (or you could partition it for root and home).
      Do make sure that SSD has ESP partition.
      This should make things work for you.

      You'll have to turn off RST. For the second part, please make sure that you have selected the second drive, it uses GPT partition and your USB is created in GPT partitioning as well.

    I have a laptop of 256gb ssd and 1tb hdd,so i am thinking to follow this video to install linux,but i have a doubt regarding the part between 7:30 &7:40,where you switch the device for boot intsallation from 128gb to 1tb disk,but i am told that we have to keep device for boot installation unchanged to the disk where windows os is installed or else it will create another efi on hdd that will
    Slow your boot ,Make debugging hard later if something goes wrong
    and we would have to go into boot menu to boot ubuntu,please guide me regarding device for boot installation

      Your HDD is untouched and on Windows? In the file manager, look for Other Locations tab in the left sidebar. Click on it and it should show the option to mount the HDD.

    • @Itsfoss

      Windows is installed on the HDD and SSD is not used at all? That's weird. The entire point of having SSD is to utililize the speed of SSD and use HDD for storing data.
