    My barefoot trimmer tried to V it and left it and the crack did not go away. So I tried your method Becky and it worked! Thanks so much for this wonderful method! It definitely works.

    You should not be allowed near horses. This is disgusting. Stop trying to be a trained farrier or trimmer just to save some money. If any viewer has any sense, you will NOT follow this advice and will seek out a trained practitioner to deal with your horse's hoof problems. 😐

      +Emily Dodman It is very common to use copper sulfate for horses. Get over yourself thinking you know everything. If you disagree with what she is suggesting then don't do it.

      +Amy Blake are you a trained farrier? I'm guessing no. I have a horse, have a bachelors degree in Equine Science with honours and have been around horses my entire life, but have NEVER seen anyone use this method or copper sulphate on a horse. Maybe where you are from they do, but this would be completely unacceptable by any sane person's standards. Whytrim or correct a horse's hooves, when we have farrier and veterinary surgeons who have trained for many years? When my horse came to me she had terrible hoof cracks, majority of the time they are caused by poor shoeing and/or weather changes I.e. From wet to dry. As soon as I got her into a routine with the farrier and followed his advice, 12 months down the line she has completely healthy feet with zero cracks and the perfect shoe balance. I'm sure she treats her horses in this way all the time.. As it is probably a reoccurring problem due to poor treatment! I wrote this comment to hopefully stop others following this poor advice!

      Maybe it's time someone sends the animal police out there to see what she's doing. I really believe she thinks she's doing it right, but most of the time she's trying to fix what she caused herself in the first time.

      If it's a barefoot horse, using a farrier to do the trimming is one of things that create these cracks. Farriers leave too much surface at the bottom of the hoof wall which can cause shredding and even these cracks. Use an experienced and/or certified barefoot trimmer if you're keeping your horse barefoot, and use a radius rasp about once a week.

    Im gonna give you some advice- Dont take offense, but please be aware that you need to fix the problem, not the symptom. I see that you are trying to do the hoofcare yourself- you have stated that you have "treated" many horses like you are doing with this one. If it were me, I would probably take these videos on hoofcare down until you have had some experience properly trimming a horse. While your method of cleaning out a crack may work, its not going go fix the problem going on here, which is overgrowth. The reason your horses hooves are chipping is simply due to neglected hoofcare. Having your hoofwall chip away is NOT good at all, and not normal for any horse unless overgrown.. it's caused by lack of natural wear- when a horse is not living in a natural/wild environment.. and then neglect in trimmings to keep the hoofwall at a proper heigh. I am a natural hoof care provider, and have been for 12+ years. I am willing to help you in any way possible to understand hoof care with a natural or holistic approach. The bottom line is when a horses hooves are chipping away like youra are and have cracking as well, they have way too much hoofwall growth, and you could really cause your horses a lot of damage by letting them get to that point. I have done hoof reconstruction on several horses whose owners either couldnt afford to trim their horses regularly, or just didnt believe it necessary and let them break off on their own, as you are doing yourself- some will break dang near, or all the way up to the coronary band- causing extensive damage and deformity when/if you are able yo grow that hoofwall out again in a year or so. Please dont be teaching people that chipping hooves are normal or healthy... because it should be avoided. Have your horses trimmed at a proper interval of every 4-6 weeks, and you should never have any problems with your horses hooves cracking or chipping unless they stand in feces/urine all day or have a really poor diet. If you'd like any help, Im more than happy to help point you in the right direction!

    Trimming the feet more regularily, bevel them and adress the ''corners'' on the side ofthe toe, you most probably wouldn't get the crack to start with.
    While chipping is natural and good in a sense, the hoof should not get long enough to start chipping.

      Have you ever used koppertox on your horse's thrush, stuff sold in the farm stores for thrush? That stuff dyes your arms a weird blue green color if it splashes past your gloves, and splash is the key word when my horse yanks his foot and redirects the spray. The glasses aren't a bad idea. I'm like many here. I was concerned about using this product, but it's the product used to create copper napthenate which is the primary active ingredient in Koppertox. Copper Sulfate is also used for athlete's foot products and is bound into the flooring of some showers. I looked up the chem chart for uses of copper sulfate. Interestingly, there is a forum that had a lot of comments about using this product for thrush. I'm not sure about packing it in there, but soaking looks fine based on the chemical breakdown.

      all. I use all natural remedies for my animals and rarely have any
      issues. I keep them trimmed myself - keep them out of wet or "full of
      waste" areas so as not to create any issues. You do not HAVE to be a
      farrier to know what you are doing. Some farriers are not so good
      either. You are not the judge Jeanette. You do not have enough information on her to issue such a statement.

      No you do not need a " real farrier " to keep your horses sound. You do need knowledge. In my more then 35 years of horse keeping I have seen alot of horses hurt by " real farriers ". Very high heels fad, very long toe fad, full pads when not needed, shoes nailed on at the back of the foot keeping the heel from expanding on landings, thin the soles, cut the frog out....I got very tired of " real farriers " started reading everything I could get my hands on, talked to vets, and yes even " real farriers " I trim my 5 myself and they are sounder then when I had real farriers triming.
      Knowledge is the key.

    hi becky, great video. I have a tip we use. take a half sheet of construction paper or a kind of stiff paper.
    fold in half, put your medication inside. lay flat on table, take the medicine bottle roll over paper where medication is. now it's a powered. hold paper up crease down like "V" it will pour right it the hole.

    I could NOT believe what I was witnessing in this video! The trim is HORRIBLE. The trim is not balanced at all. There is heavy bar down to the apex and pinching the frog and coming off the heel quarters. Dead sole and bar covering the enitre sole. Toes are far too long which is causing the extra leverage at the toe and causing the toe crack. The heels are too high and not brought back to the widest part of the heel. Too many things wrong with this trim. THAT is why you have a toe crack.

    The last video I watched said to trim down the pillars so that distortion doesn’t keep opening the crack I believe that too. I believe what you’re doing I believe distortion also opens up the crack thank you.
    Copper sulfate is the best. I buy it in a tube already liquid form and it’s good for jockey and foot fungus too. The only thing that’s helped lol

    Can we please talk about WHY your horses feet look like that in the first place?! That's horrendous. Between the "chips" (that's far beyond just some chips...) But when you leave the toe as long as you did, and do DIY farrier work you learn from a RUclips video? This is what you get. Please, don't assure people with confidence that what you're doing is okay. It's not. By horse is worth the $50 trim by a professional who understands his individual bone structure.

    I have had multiple farriers that I have FIRED because they did not know what they were doing !!!!! . My horse developed cracks and no he is not housed in a mud pen . the last farrier said His hooves were so out of balanced that is why the flairs and cracks were in his feet every time the farriers left he could not walk for several weeks I kept trying to get the last farrier to debride the holes but again NO it takes time he said just give me about 5 months. I was at my wits end. now that was 3 farriers I went through. Finally I called the vet and when they debrided the hoofs it had huge infected holes 4 of them the farriers kept saying it is going to take some time for them to get in shape. well I was livid now a few thousand dollars later. he is still suffering . the vet gave me some solution to pack the cracks she said it was vinegar and copper sulfate. that being said Becky your horse hooves look GREAT. old time Equine vets are wonderful seems to me they had horse health in mind in stead of making a killing off your horse's malady

      Do your research, you clearly know nothing, copper sulfate soaking in hooves is something I have used for many horses I’ve trained that had cracks in their hooves, it worked wonders and the crack completely disappeared. This is a common practice that has been used for many years, you do not need a professional farrier to treat cracks, i have tried that method and they didnt go away. So do your research before acting like you know everything because no one does. I am not saying this to be mean, I am just saying this because it’s true.

    Help! I just rescued my guy. His toe cracks were on 3 hooves and diagnosed as grass cracks by the ferrier. He completely dismissed my concerns. The front hooves are growing out but the back hoof went from growing out to all the way up to the coronary band on his rest days. I call the ferrier and he told me "we can show him if it bothers you". The horse isn't acting lame or like it's sensitive but I don't want it to get worse. I just started him on hoof supplements and hoof dressing.

    what a beautiful horse , I have seen old traditional farriers do this method

  • @beautattain3728
    @beautattain3728 6 лет назад +2

    DO NOT USE THIS METHOD. IT IS DANGEROUS TO THE HORSE AND IS NOT EFFECTIVE BECAUSE IT DOESN'T ADDRESS THE CAUSE. WHY? Read below:
    First, the reason most farriers cut out the area around a crack is to stop dirt from getting trapped in the area which allows bacteria to grow. Often that is all that can be Immediately done for a crack. It is NOT recommend that you dig into the sole and wall when you are this inexperienced because you are only opening up the live portion of the foot to more bacteria if you go too deep. Moreover, putting a toxic substance into that hole is also going to kill more hoof tissue, creating a food source for bad bacteria, killing good bacteria and creating a cycle of thrush issues that don't resolve or even abcess.
    This method doesn't work because cracks are formed by uneven weight bearing on the hoof capsule, which causes parts of the hoof wall to break apart. This extra stress can be caused by trims that don't balance the load onto the foot equally, irregular trimming, and changes in environment. To treat the issue, an owner should use a reputable farrier who knows what he or she is doing, schedule regular trims, and depending on how severe the crack is, a bar shoe should be applied to take strain off of that portion of the capsule and allow healthy growth.
    She did nothing good for this horse, and she's telling ignorant people to do the same. Shame on her!

  • @Linda-hs1lk
    @Linda-hs1lk 9 лет назад +3

    If the farrier does his work well the crack WON'T come back. And he surely won't use a Swiss knife. It's absolutely shocking what this woman is claiming and doing. To be honest, I find it close to animal abuse.

    My grandpa was a veterinarian & I grew up around horsemen & farriers on the one time largest 1 owner cattle ranch in the world "Parker Ranch" & never have I seen anyone use chemicals like that on a horses hoof. I do know that the Ranch had a paddock just for horse's when they were being treated for severely cracked hooves. They walked in tall grass...weren't kept in stalls or in stables because of urine & feces in the straw. And every horseman I know took special care of their horses hooves ALL the time...

      You haven't been to the Islands, so you don't know our level of horse care. I haven't cut down your way of caring for horses hooves... Why not take it out on your haters??? We don't get a fungus problem inspite of the moisture we have here in Hawai`i. Our Ranch horses don't step or stand in urine/feces soaked straw. They spend majority of their lives in pastures. If you want to know how well my family knows horses Google up Dr. Leonard Newton Case DVM, or Loyal To The Land by Dr. Billy Bergin. You mentioned "fungus" as the cause...I'm letting you know how not to have a fungus problem, which I learned from my grandpa & the best horsemen in Parker Ranch & Hawaiian Ranching history... Your Dr. Gore wasn't even born when my grandpa was practicing veterinary medicine & neither were you. He also was the overseer of the Honolulu Zoo & he & his brother started the horse program @ Kapi`olani Park in Waikiki... Being he was the leading pathologist of his time & cured horse & cattle epidemics here in the Hawaiian Islands!!! I'm the wrong guy to start with...plus I made no attack on you...so back up lady...

    I understand the point the other comments are making, but saying she needs a "real", "certified", "professional" farrier is not what homesteading is about. At least my definition of it, it's about becoming independent by building your own house off the grid, growing your own food, raising your own animals and such. To me it's not really homesteading if you're seeking skills in other people that you should know as a homesteader. I'm not saying to be your own doctor but it doesn't hurt to know first aid, apply that this situation. She's trying her best to cure a problem, which seems to work, and maybe she knows by now it's not the best method. The feedback is really harsh, even if it's years old.

    All you people leaving these negative comments obviously never tried the natural way! I used this method. I bought a horse where nothing helped to get a very bad crack out of her foot. She was even on shoes for 3 years before I got her. My horse was never lame in the cracked foot, and the crack (which was nearly all the way to the top!¬) is now nearly completely gone! It is possible to teach yourself to rim your horse's feet. I would never suggest anyone to use snips though, only rasping.
