The wiring in my residence is "uncommon" and I recently purchased the Klein circuit finder to help me with rewiring several circuits and adding some dedicated circuits (microwave & refrigerator). The circuit finder has been helpful. Wish I had it when I helped some people properly label their service panels as it definitely saves time.

@@ElectricianToolDeals I used the tool tonight to identify which circuit a receptacle is connected to. One trip to panel and located breaker. Besides saving time avoided turning breakers off to identify circuit which may have required resetting clocks, etc. Having the correct tool for a job is a certainly tge way to go.

Work in research lab and in the NFPA 70 handbook over many years have shown that wrapping conductors around the screw with the plate on top is the securest method and avoids poor connections which is subject to arcing and heat. You can see some heat damage around the stab in connections at the back those plates holding the conductors in your receptacle they also weaken over time and often are not seated properly by people in the first place.
I agree that back stabs are not the preferred method by our team. We prefer to use the compression plate on the side as it has a torque spec of approximately 15 in/lbs. Additionally, the compression plate type gives a larger surface area to contact the point of termination. This keeps the wire from moving more efficiently. Now if I have receptacles that do not have compression plates I will wrap the wire in a clockwise fashion around the screw. This insures that the wire tightens as you tighten the screw. Lastly, in the case of stranded wire the only option is compression terminals or ul listed fork terminals. Thank you for your input and Have A Great Day.
@@ElectricianToolDeals I can literally count the number of electricians on one hand that would torque a receptacle I do it religiously as per NFPA but so many electricians don’t. For them torquing only happens in a breaker panel. For fine stranded wire at least you can put a non-insulated UL ferrule on them and they then could be put under a compression plate

You can also remove the gfci carefully and test voltage with a multimeter from hot to ground and hot to neutral. If you have 120v on both tests, your gfci is bad.
Did replacing them all fix the problem?
Very cool tool. I noticed that was a 15 amp CFGI outlet on a 20 Amp circuit. Does it have to be a 20 amp outlet or not??
Thanks for your question. Any time you install an outlet, or device of any kind, you want it to be equal or smaller in rating. So if the circuit was 15A, and you installed a 20A receptacle, you would not be code compliant.

I have a Gfci receptacle in a bathroom that trips often and not sure what is causing it to trip. When I reset it, I can feel that it is warm to the touch. I checked the temperature and it reads about 100 degrees vs. 89/92 of the surrounding wall which backs up to an attic. Is this an indication it is bad needs replacing or maybe other problems? I plan on purchasing the tools to check as you have shown. Thanks for the video and instructions.
This is interesting. I would try installing a new one first. However, if there are 2 sets of white and black wires attached to different terminals on the back, then there are more outlets also being protected by the same gfci. I would disconnect the hot wire and wire nut it. Then I would turn the breaker back on and check other outlets in same room or other bathroom, if applicable. If there are other outlets connected to the load side they will no longer have power.
I would then remove the load side wire and tie it to the line side wires. This removes the extra load from the gfci. This will require you to put gfci type receptacles in all the downline outlets. This will definitely solve your problem. Thank you for your comment and Have A Great Day!!!

We have been in our new build house 18 months...I had to have warranty electric work on an outside GFCI twice. Now warranty past...wife went to plug in hair dryer and no power in master bath...I went test gfci in front bath test tripped and won reset. Can you suggest.

On* I'm going to say it's probably a bad gfci or it has moisture in it.

No that means that the hot is broken somewhere. Have you check the breaker?
What if I have a faceless GFCI that controls all the outdoor outlets? A thunderstorm just passed through a few hours ago - I checked all of the outside outlets and I didn't notice any moisture. How long should I wait?

@@ElectricianToolDeals I didn't wait long enough. Moisture must've gotten in pretty bad because this is the first time I've had to wait this long (appx 7 hrs). All are working now.

Is it normal for there to be two GFCI outlets side by side? There's two in the kitchen; one clicks when you press "Test" and "Reset" and the other not only doesn't click but the "Test" button can't be pressed at all.
My problem is a power outage in a single bedroom, a side of the living room, and one light in the kitchen - they appear to go out together. Last month they went out for an entire week (or more) and then suddenly began working again, only to cut off two weeks later. I've tried twitching the circuit breaker but that didn't work either :/
Replace the gfci that doesn't click and see if that solves your problem
I've seen it in remodels before...they should both work, it's possible when the wonky one isn't working and it "feeds" the bedroom and kitchen light?
@@RogerPackThat is correct. If the wires are terminated on the load side, then the outlets down the line will also stop, in the event of a fault.

How do I rewire a GFC outlet connected to an outlet
Remove the wire on the side of the gfci that says load and connect it to the side of the outlet that says line. However, if you do this you must add another gfci in place of the outlet that was regular.
Just had 4 outlets in my kitchen quit working - one of them is a GFCI outlet and it won't reset. The breaker is on on the box. I've turned the breaker on/off with no luck. Could it be a bad GCFI outlet that needs replacing?

I just replaced the GFCI, I connected the line, the load, and the ground correctly, it shows to have power on both outlets, but it wont reset. What else could be the problem?
If you connected the 2nd outlet to the load and it has power, then it is working correctly. Push test and there should be a pop and the reset will come out
If it has power then it is already reset, maybe it refuses to trip with the trip button? Did you figure this out?
he gives the reasons why it would "not reset" at 9:20 (besides if a ground wire is loose and disconnected, which he finds and fixes first)

When I push the test button on my gfci outlet it pops. When I plug in the same tester you have it says it is wired correctly but when I push the button to check the gfci it doesn't pop the the gfci. tried changing out the gfci outlet but get the same results

Hi. I cut a cord of a lamp that was connected into an outlet with a GFI AND NOW THERE îs No POWER And The green light wont turn ON.

I checked The panel And nothing shows Up as a breaker.

These GFCI outlets never last as long as the box says the will. I recently had to replace all the GFCI's in a 3 year old home.
What if the light is solid red,replaced, and its still solid red? I can't reset it.
Have you tried to see if it has power? If so then you probably have a broken neutral wire.
@ElectricianToolDeals i haven't plugged anything into it. Since it's not green,I didn't try. Breaker is fine, switched back and forth. Only three wires in outlet black,neutral, and ground. I'll buy the tester soon.
@TheOracle313 That would be my recommendation. Without testing, it's hard to tell exactly what the problem is.
What if I get no signal?
Check to see if the diagnostic lights are on the transmitter/ GFCI tester. If not then you have no power. Start by checking for a tripped breaker. If no tripped breaker then move on to locating and resetting other GFCI's around your house. Please comment back with updates. Since I disconnected the first outlet cables closest to the breakers I took away all the power out of the rest of my outlets all I had to do was put in my new outlet then got all my power back to 3 rooms that breaker shared power with.
