I've had the same engine for the past 13 years with only minor work like gaskets and a few exhausts from melting them. Engine is still going strong with 76,800 miles on it. Had to replace the carbs and do a few fuel treatments to clean the jets and valves from carbon build up

The RPM can vary on every batch of fuel. Since these ships run on heavy oil, maintaining the correct injection temperature is an important factor.
It's not like everyone does it. The chance of you even getting such a bike is small. Apart from that you of course talk to the previous owner and look for any signs of abuse ;)

If you’re worried about someone previously doing shit like this to the bike you’re looking at, there will definitely be neglect somewhere else on the bike. Fluids, break pads/rotors, tires, chain. these dudes are morons i guarantee you they don’t know how to do even the simplest of maintenance to the bike nor do they care to. Used bikes can be reliable just gotta know how to tell if it was taken care of by lookin at it.
