Stan Jonathan was one of the toughest fighters back then. It seemed to come naturally to him. That Bruins team was fun to watch with Don Cherry as coach, Wensick and Jonathan.
Jonathan and Howatt - two little guys who wouldn't avoid anything. I think both were 5'8" and about 175. Howatt's first NHL game he went with both Schultz and Kelly in the Spectrum.

Guess what all you Islanders haters, this was the end of the first period of the second game of the April, 1980 playoff series between the Islanders and Bruins. It was held on April 17, 1980. The Islanders won it in OT, 5-4, on a goal by Bob Bourne, at only 1:24 of OT, to take a 2-0 lead in the Series which they would win 4-1. There were 4 players on each team thrown out of the game as a result of this brawl. Newell assessed 248 minutes of penalties in that first period, which set the record for most penalty minutes in one period of a Stanley Cup game. For all of you Bruin fans who think that you got the better of this brawl, Clark Gillies beat the crap of of noted asshole, O'Reilly, at the beginning of that first period. A couple of days later, at the Coliseum for the 4th game, a Game which I attended, Gillies laid such a beating on O'Reilly that I'm still amazed that he ever came back to play.

There has been talk Jonathan dodged Howatt's challenge after Jonathan destroyed Lorimer. However, during the Lorimer fight, Trottier reached over and ripped off Jonathan's suspenders. When Howatt challenged Jonathan, Jonathan backed off and looked down at his pants. That's when an incensed Howatt suckered Cashman. The next time you see Jonathan his suspenders are wrapped and tied around his pants. Jonathan, reasonably, didn't want to have his pants fall down during a fight. All of this is clearly seen if you watch carefully and slowly.
Jonathan going after Lorimer was a gutless thug beating up on an actual hockey player. The sort of crime that the NHL finally stopped tolerating. In the end the Isles played hockey and won 4 Cups while the Bruins and their thugs went home early every year. I remember seeing this on TV. Sutter and Milbury were getting ready to drop the gloves and go at it even as Cheesy Cheevers steered the puck to the corner. Then Stan Jonathan started going at it with Bob Lorimer, almost right away. A few seconds after that, Al Secord started pounding away at Gord Lane. Cheesy then jumped in to cool down Bill Smith who looked like he was about to blow a gasket. And no sooner had he managed to get Smith to cool his jets than Garry Howatt started going at it with Wayne Cashman (like Gillies and O'Reilly they had fought earlier in the period). 4 players aside got game misconducts for this one - Sutter, Lorimer, Lane & Howatt for the NYI, and Milbury, Secord, Jonathan and Cashman for the Bruins.

I hated those Islander teams, because Ive been die hard Ranger fan since 1976, but they were fun to watch. Is it me or is there barely no hard checks thrown into todays game? Maybe its the Rangers, but I rarely see a hard check nevermind a real brawl. I realize the quality is better today, but the emotion, loyalty and familiarity with your team and knowing every player on other teams made it so much more fun to watch. And remember the old play off system where 1 through 4 in each division had to play their way out of the division in the playoffs? It made for great rivalries, they just dont exist the way the did with the old system. Todays hockey is more the Escapades, than old time hockey consisting of mostly Canadians and few Americans playing in the league. It was a cult sport you loved it or hated it, today its a different game for different fans, but thats progress, I guess lol
Brawls don't happen any more because of several rules instituted by the NHL. 3rd-man in rule, leaving the bench rule, shut down all those fights. Now, most of what you see are scrums with everyone bunching up, but keeping their gloves on. What is fun to watch, is search youtube for NHL players that are miked up, and hear the first-hand chirping between players. Same thing with the refs. Referee Wes McCauly is particularly fun to watch and has several videos on you-tube.

And remember the old play off system where 1 through 4 in each division had to play their way out of the division in the playoffs? It made for great rivalries, they just dont exist the way the did with the old system. Todays hockey is more the Escapades, than old time hockey consisting of mostly Canadians and few Americans playing in the league. It was a cult sport you loved it or hated it, today its a different game for different fans, but thats progress, I guess lol
Brawls don't happen any more because of several rules instituted by the NHL. 3rd-man in rule, leaving the bench rule, shut down all those fights. Now, most of what you see are scrums with everyone bunching up, but keeping their gloves on. What is fun to watch, is search youtube for NHL players that are miked up, and hear the first-hand chirping between players. Same thing with the refs. Referee Wes McCauly is particularly fun to watch and has several videos on you-tube.

Its a different game, and the play off intensity is what all divisional games were like in the 70s thru 90s( cant speak prior to 1976, too young to remember lol ). The playoffs are great, but the regular season lacks intensity, hitting, rivalries etc
