I get that we don't need to give out GPS coordinates to our spots, and I don't. But it never hurt anyone to share some broader details...such as Northeastern Oregon along the Snake River, or Southeastern Washington etc. Such comments encompass litterally millions of acres and have no chance of spoiling our favorite spots, and actually enourage fellow hunters. We hunters need to stick together, and help others find success in this passion of ours, not hide our cards so close to our chest. It's not like these details are connected to national security, and besides it's never hunting pressure that impacts Chukar populations....almost entirely weather related (according to an Oregon Department of Fish and Game wildlife biologist...and chukar hunter). Good luck everyone, and have fun. I'll be with my son and our 3 pointing bird dogs near Richland, Oregon this weekend. P.S. I never miss one of Eric's videos. Very well done.
I love it! My flat-lander Brits would do great there. It's one of the main things that's kept me from doing a chukar hunt. I'd be deathly afraid that my dogs would run off the cliff. It would be hard to enjoy myself to the fullest with that constantly in my brain.
From Spain🇪🇸.Congratulations on that great video and contemplating, with some healthy envy, the number of good opportunities that are presented to you during the day.
I have never been quite that fortunate to find so many chukar on flat ground. I have occasionally caught them in the flats while getting water in the early season. Also, Stormy hunts a lot like my Brittany, Thor. He stays close, and that's a good thing when you are dealing with chukar that have been hunted a lot.
Enhorabuena por sus perros y sus videos, cuando le pregunten donde cazo, conteste como mi abuelo, cuando en España teniamos terrenos libres para cazar y perdices bravas, mi abuelo contestaba: En el campo.😉
Really good video Eric and always great dog work. What make and model GPS watch were you using looks like something I could get into. Looking forward to your next hunt. Real cool you stepped up for Stormy she's a treasure.
Talk about tough birds. I had a Zombie chukar. I had one yesterday and that bird drop when I shot it, dog retrieved and bird was in the bag. 30 mins go by we get another bird and when I go to put in the bag the first chukar flaps out of the bag and starts running. So glad my pup went and got it again !!!
Another great vid thanks Eric. Did I miss the bit of the story about finding those birds over the cliff? Some of my best memories are of my dogs tidying up after me.
The hunt took us in an unexpected direction and we ended up miles from that area so we weren’t able to go look for them unfortunately. I agree though, it’s so awesome when they bring back an unexpected bird!
After having a hand amputated, a fractured spine while deployed and no dog, I can’t buy a dang chukar lately! Wuss it up for me, I’ll live vicariously.
Eric, in a perfect world we'd wait til we had a little green up to pull the canyon birds up and over onto the flats...........Started chasin them in the 80's that way. My gosh we used to have fun moving many, many coveys. Was so good some years we'd only shoot one bird b per covey! You could be walking some of the ground I/we used to hunt in this video. The advent of the ATV changed things quite a bit tho. ATV tracks right along the rims from knotheads made things different in the late 90's on.
I love it, thanks for the knowledge! It seems the good ole days have returned…in my next video, I challenge myself to get a limit while only shooting one bird per covey!
Amazing as always! BTW those 7.5 xperts explain why every one of your birds shot from behind is alive. Good thing it’s mellow terrain with great dogs. I recover 87% of birds I shoot with #6s and #5s (lead) and I don’t have dogs. Food for thought
Wuss....100%!! That's the only way I can hunt them anymore is if I find a spot like that. Sports were tough on the knees in college, don't need anymore surgeries.
I've only gotten to hunt that part of the state twice (if I'm right on where you're at) and it was....unbelievable. I went with a friend and didn't think there would be much for birds because I didn't see their escape route, but sure enough....there were plenty of cooperative birds. Sure beats Hells Canyon!
Hard to judge with the GoPro lens, but are these birds flushing a bit farther out than on the usual steep ground? Seems like it. About how far on average for these ones?
6 are defacto standard. 5s late season or if you have a 12ga are unequivocal killers. 7.5 only early season if you have a pointing dog. Shot hardness important. Most important of all is patterning your gun at actual ranges you hunt to figure out what loads it likes. That will kill faaaaaar more birds than “the right size pellet” or “super high speed diamond plated killer special loads”
I like copper plated #6 pheasant loads. Federal makes a badass 1 3/8 ounce 12 gauge load pushing 1500 fps that absolutely thumps chukar with authority. The recoil is also frisky.

Just because you don’t see it on the video doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. I’m not interested in putting out videos of me walking around picking up shells.
I just don't know how to feel about self promoting hunting videos on wildlife. I almost thought this was in my state, then realized thankfully it's not. The hunting pressure is unreal in my stomping grounds, where i grew up. From Boise to Hells Canyon is tough , the birds have been hunted relentlessly come late season. Once someone calls out the location here its all over. (Easy flat land hunting) The flush tv is very egregious of hot-spotting and selling out the uplands.
I appreciate your comment and honestly, I agree with you. I struggle with this question all the time. How do we promote hunting so people care about it and care about conservation, without overloading our resources. It’s a difficult question without any easy answers.

Not even knowing what state this is ruins it for me. The vast majority of us wouldn’t bother hunting here even if he gave us the gps coordinates. We have better things to do. We’re just genuinely curious. Blatantly obscuring even the state is so needlessly arrogant in my opinion. Stop pretending everyone wants to hunt your spots! Big game is one thing, but birds? Benelli Ethos
What shot size do you recommend for just chukar hunting

The fastest loaded 7.5 or 6 are great. But I've used 4s too for longer flushing birds.

Just look at it as inspiration for scouting.
This is Nevada most likely. The other 2 possibilities are NorCal or WA. Only states I could find with 6 bird limits.
