Yes! A couple of years ago a guy was digging in an old emerald mine up in the mountains of N.C. and found one of the largest emeralds in North America.
South Carolina has the most MASSIVE amethyst crystals I’ve ever seen too (large enough to rival the Smithsonian’s collection). They were dug up in Anderson SC, and are on display in the State museum in Columbia SC.
Yep diamond hill is the best. It also had lots of skeletal quartz and druzy quartz !! My Wife ,kids and I had a blast!!!
America is a large country, and it has an amazing diversity of interesting rocks. Herkimer diamonds come from upstate New York. Arizona and New Mexico have all sorts of minerals and gemstones. When I was a kid, one of my favorite"attractions" near our summer cottage in New Hampshire was "Ruggles Mine", where the public could search for rubies and other precious stones (although there weren't very many to be found). Then there are the stones you've featured from places like Kentucky and the Carolinas. (And we can't forget the gold rush in California.)
I live here in NC and have been an amateur gemologist for 25+ yrs, I have several specimens but my favorite is my 9ct garnet.

I knew Eric back when he lived in NC. I've bought minerals from him before. I heard that he moved to Arizona when he left Alexander County, NC. Eric knows his stuff.
Its been awhile since I’ve received my 500 carat mix box and this is the first chance that I have gotten to write about it.
The stones are beautiful and while they all look great with the carbasion ( sic) cut I probably would have preferred to have some of them faceted.
My only request would be to include a key card to identify what each stone is and maybe a few ideas as to how to mount or display the stones.
There is actually a third NC emerald locality. Emerald was found south of Shelby, Cleveland Co., NC at the Plantation and Turner mines around the turn of the century. It was a pegmatite comprised of feldspar, biotite mica, schrol, quartz with accessory garnet, rutile, etc. This locality never produced the quantity of the two most well known localities in NC but it did produce a few emeralds of exceptional quality. This deposit really never was fully exploited and may still hold allot of potential.

I'm a native north Carolinian here and I grew up not far from hiddenite, NC. We have some of the most unique quartz crystal specimens from there. Please don't come digging, though. Most of it is on private land, and we aren't shy about telling trespassers to go.

Are you going to have a NC part 2? You missed ruby, sapphire, kyanite, common opal, and petrified/opalized wood - among others. Tiffany mined many fine garnets for their jewelry in the NC mountains in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Their mine is now closed, but the area around it is still a great place to find nice garnets. NC is a fun place to be a rockhound!

They where volcanoes in Cleveland and Rutherford county way back in time.
I would love to know more about North Carolina rubies and spinel. They come from around the mountains around the Nantahala gorge

Going to spruce pine... highly recommend... If you do make sure you visit "rocks and things" as well as making sure you speak with Mabel... Shes the owner.

They recently discovered a new stone, being that Mabel has a relationship with "Melody, the author - famous for love is in the earth & many others

I live in Western North Carolina in one of the few counties that really doesn't have much in the way of awesome crystals. (Dammit). The only crystals I have found are tiny, tiny garnets. There is a worked out mine for industrial zircon. There is pink and also white feldspar, some mica, and thin streaks of epidolite in the rocks around here. None of the more awesome gemstones are near. Since I am partially disabled and own an ancient car, I can't drive far. Talk about frustrating.
At least three locations in NC for Emeralds, he forgot Shelby NC. Many from Shelby are in the Smithsonian.

I’m in rutherfordton where betchlers mint is located and I think it was 31 million dollars in gold was made into coin but more than that was actually mined from it ..and just over the hill from my property was a Ruby mine many many years ago ! My state is absolutely what they call GODS COUNTRY it’s nature is most beautiful
