I think the dark couloring has something to do with the sun, as i had also kept a colony which was darker in nature and monogynous, so maybe continued exposure to sun-rays darken the chitin of some ants?
Would u be able to tell me how to identify an ant species, cus i want to try and catch some queens on the nuptial flight in belgium. Theres this orange/yellow ant and they are very aggressive, they can bite or sting. The only possible species that it can be are lasius flavus and myrmica rubra. Then i want to catch a couple black queens too, they should be lasius niger. In case ure wondering if i know when the nuptial flight is, i found a list of all ants species and the nuptial flight time, but from the netherlands.
