He can come off smug because he speaks from a position of knowing wtf he’s talking about to an audience who generally know nothing. So I can see why a lot of people hate on him.
But what he says is something people don’t tend to think about a lot, but has some relevance.
Like the way physics describes how reality works is in terms of mathematics. For example the curvature of a circle is the ratio of its circumference to its diameter, described as “π”
But pi doesn’t exist in the real world, it’s an incalculable abstraction because in real life there’s no such thing as a perfect circle.
But we use the value of pi in many equations that describe real world phenomena like the cosmological constant and Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle.
So the fact that pi is just an imaginary abstraction, yet is used to describe our observed reality, is something of a paradox. This illustrates the incompleteness of mathematics and measurement as tools to describe objective reality. Perhaps the true nature of reality is, in the end, unknowable.
Really it’s a somewhat profound epistemological point he’s trying to make.
But nuance like this is lost on most people. They just hear shit like this and go like “ummm ackshually!!! 🤓 😂”
