  • I'm having a new road bike frame built, so I needed to strip some parts off my handbuilt "Drumlin" road bike and rebuild it with some Velocity wheels and a Sram AXS Force 12 speed eTap electronic groupset. Watch me strip things down, rebuild and tune my personal, handbuilt road bike!

    I'm really enjoying your videos! Agree with your philosophy of repairing and reusing older bikes and that they're a much better choice and value than big box store bikes. I've noticed that some of your videos run 60 to 90 minutes. Seems these days that i only go to the short attention span theatre. You have a lot of great content. I think more of it would be seen in 10 to 20 minute segments. Yoye call, of course.

    Hi Just finished viewing clip of o/hauling Ross Mt. Hood mtb 1983 model. L have rescued a road Ross Gran Prix Pro model with a 1971 bicycle license sticker from Corvallis OR When I acquired it as only a frame and fork with cottered all steel crank Chunky lugs, but frame alone without crank was fairly light Cable ferrules for rear brake cable are brazed on bottom of top tube, but everything else bottle cage, down tube shafters and shift cable guides/ferrule has to be clamped on. The bottom bracket shell is only about 72 mm wide. After removing both fixed and adjustable cups I installed sealed BB cartridge which has about 16 mm of left side adjusting cone sticking out.
    Tnstalled a Tange fork This bike fits me and I like knowing riding over 50 yo bike I'm 73)

    I dig the custom cassette lock ring wrench. I’m stealing that idea. Maybe I’ll weld two of those old seat posts together for extra leverage.

    The wireless shifters looked wild on the build. Handlebars were also an awesome choice.

    You should put a little bit of air in those TPU tubes before you install. Just enough to give it a slight round circumference shape. That prevents it from getting pinched as you install them, as it will tuck into the tire better.

    • @bkefrmr
      @bkefrmr  11 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah. They had some air in them. Maybe a bit more next time. 👍👍

      @@bkefrmr I've used the cheaper type TPU tubes in the past. Some can be flawed at the bottom of the valve stem where it comes out of the tube. I prep them with a bead of hot glue around the base of the stem. It seems to give them a little more stability.

      I have done this for as long as I can remember . A little air in the tube to shape it before installation .

    When I went to clipless pedals I went with the two bolt SPD. Then I ended up going to Speedplay, now I'm back to two bolt SPD if that tells you anything :). I never understood the SPD-SL/Look style ones since you're walking on the wear surface the whole time... I really liked Speedplay pedals for the float, it did help when I had a knee injury. But when I went back to SPD, it was like a big sigh of relief, no more cleat cover to deal with, easier to walk, easier to clip in and out. Some folks say the other styles provide a better "surface" to put power in to, not sure I buy that a lot if you're using a stiff shoe.

    Can’t tell from the video, but are those short pull rim brakes? Or the velo orange grand cru? Trying to get a short pull rim brake with clearance for 32mm. Excited to see the new build but that bike is quite nice as well! You have a preference for tubes? I’m a big fan of Reynolds and tange but have not tried anything from Columbus or true temper…yet.

    • @bkefrmr
      @bkefrmr  11 месяцев назад +1

      Honestly, I don’t think the brand of tubes matters. I know that the .7-.4-.7 butting on these Kaisei tubes is too thin for my height and/or weight.
      The new bike is made with a NOS Waterford True Temper S3 tubeset I bought from a guy who won it in a silent auction years ago. True Temper no longer makes bike tubes and Waterford just closed down for good. A former Waterford (and Serotta) builder is fillet brazing the bike for me. Check out Dave Wages’s work at Ellis Cycles!

      These are Tektro r539 brakes. Mid reach I think. It’s a combination of where the brake bridge is and how much reach the calipers have. I built the bike for 28mm tires. 32 is very, very tight!

      @@bkefrmr Dave is making some beautiful bikes. I always get velospec and true temper confused, I don’t know to many builders other than Rodriguez using velospec. Tube shape and frame builder seem to be the winning combination as oppose to brand of steel. Id like to get a custom steel to go along with my TI Sanitas cycle, although at some point I might need a new car 😂. Love the content, thanks for sharing the build!

    I have found out that battery theft is an emerging problem for these electronic derailleurs . Firmware updates gradually water down performance over time , the more of them you permit to download and install . This is forced redundancy which means replacing the derailleur/s every five years or so .
