We rented a car from Hertz. Cost us $930 AUD for four weeks for a Nissan Altima sedan. Picked up from a Hertz centre in Palo Alto & dropped it off at LAX. Drove about 3000 miles. All I needed was a drivers license & passport. The above cost included insurance. This was in 2017. I reserved it from Australia a few days prior to departure. We also got the free shuttle from the car drop off yard to the terminal at LAX. Unlimited mileage. Two drivers. No cleaning fees charged. Returned it with full tank of gas. Paid tolls online for the few toll roads we used. We did the free frequent renter membership too,
My experience is that if you arrive late and you had reserved a compact or economy car they are usually not available anymore and you will get a full size for the same prize.
The last 2 times I pick up the rental car it was dirty and I took it back cleaner then when I picked it up. The last time I rental Hertz was less expensive then the other by $50.00 a day. You should take pictures before you drive off and pictures after dropping it off. Always get a receipt too. I know one time I was picking up in Ontario CA and dropping off in Orange county they wanted to charge me a drop off fee. Like always Chris your video is really informative and great. Other time I was rear ended driving on the 91 and the guy was driving a rental car. CHP and the driver wouldn't give me any contact information. I had to get it from my insurance company. I guess they didn't want me to know it was a rental.
I rarely rent a car. But when I did, I rented from Sixt and so far, I made good experiences with Sixt. However, I think - while growing - they are not that known in the US (yet)
I recall the vehicle i was riding with AVIS started displaying a maintance message on the dash. I didn't know what to do with it and whether It was ok to continue driving. So I just found nearest AVIS in Kendall, Miami, where I was at the time. Explained the guy in the office my concern. He was totally cool with that. Didn't even come out to take a look. Just told me to carry on. Upon returning the car back in Orlando airport I mentioned the error to the Avis agent taking the car, he appreciated telling me this and I was on my way. The other time in Colorado I had a little rock fly into the windshield. A small hardly noticeable chip occurred. Hertz were cool with it too. Just be open about the abnormalities that occur during travel.
Thanks for the information, quite difficult as a foreigner (in this case from NL) to navigate the corporate hellscape of the US without putting weeks of research into not being taken advantage of. Much appreciated!
I always pay for the company’s full coverage as I don’t want whatever it is to hit my car insurance - I prefer to just drop the car off, even if something happened to it and not have to worry about it. I have returned with no issues after a break in a windshield, as well as ones with scratches.
Drive your own if you can lol have a friend pick you up from the airport 😊 and if short trip ride with them! I did an Uber on the way back to friends after dropping off a car.
Thanks for the great tips. Just status matched to hertz president’s circle using my national executive elite status. I’ll give it a shot this weekend in Miami.
Chris how come you don’t do cruises? I’ve seen just about every destination and mode of travel on your channel BESIDES cruising. I think you would love a nice Royal Caribbean cruise
Vehicle size doesn't dictate its performance in the rain. Performance hinges on tire traction, tread, type, and compound. The right tires for the conditions - snow, all-season, or summer - make a massive difference. Factors like lateral grooves and tire temperature also matter. If the tires aren't warmed up, they won't gain traction in the rain. This is less of a concern for people using standard tires, but it can still be an issue if you drive too fast before your tires reach their optimal temp. I'm disgusted that I can't find a manual vehicle all I see are fucking automatics.
Would it be feasible to rent a car in say Seattle drive it to Yellow stone and drop it off in Vegas Chris? I live in the UK and would love to do a big road trip like that.
What do I I do when my rental got key watch ? State Farm insurance rent a car for me while my car is in the shop for repair? Do u need to call the renter and let them know? And State Farm should they know too? .
Can anyone advise where isthe best place to get a guide equivalent to the UK highway code with all the road signs, markings, and road etiquette for US roads. Does such a thing exist?
Thanks for the amazing Livestream, Chris. Have you tried renting a car from Dollar? When I rented a car from them, they scammed me and charged me for a car that was really smelly, it smelled like cigarettes. I really like Enterprise and Hertz!
Hello, just watched this video, so thank you. I just booked a rental car from Alamo at the Sara/Bradenton airport. Hear any feedback to this car rental service from there. We booked a mid-size SUV. Any tips, shoot them my way. Thank you
Wrong on insurance in all states except California (and that’s US people only) and Texas (everyone) rental cars come with basic liability as required by local state law. If the company doesn’t pay then they are jointly liable with you which still means they’re liable
Forgive me if you covered this. 97% of the times I reserve a class that says "similar to Toyota Corolla" they have no Corollas. I end up with a crummy Chevy or Kia. How can you beat this? Can you make them give your a Corolla or Accord? My informed belief is that it is purely bait and switch, but impossible for consumer agencies or D.A.'s to prove, based on nonstatic logistics. So I'm going to assume that they're going to do it without remorse. My question is, can I prevail anyway? Can I lock in a GOOD model, not just class?
As to bait and switch, they ALWAYS say "if you want to upgrade, we have some Lexus which are much, much nicer than the Toyotas AND Chevys". Maybe I'm wrong, and that it is not by design. Or it's partially by design, because less than 1% of their fleet in that class are Corollas, but 74% are Kias and Chevrolet Cruzes (vomit). "Technically" they may not be breaking the law in that situation, but regardless, I want to not be their victim.
I think you're pretty accurate in that assessment... for the the big American companies I don't really think there is a way to beat it.. or at least not one that I've found
@@larrybudsock6507 The *point* is that you get to drive a Chevy Cruze when the advertisement contained something fundamentally superior. If you haven't had the Chevy Cruze experience, when that day comes you'll think back to this.
@@Bill_Woo I believe that I have gotten a Cruze. If you rent a lot, you should know how this works. I once reserved the special, compact or larger. Definitely won't do that again, I don't care how much cheaper it is.

Not exactly.. the law says these additional drivers in California can't be charged: spouse, child or person for whom the renter is a legal guardian, sibling, parent, grandparent, employer, or coworker,
What are people's rates compared to 2019? Two and a half times higher, triple, or what? (I posted this before but RUclips didn't like me calling the S-demic by its correct name and poofed my comment.)
@@YellowProductionsI paid $150-$200 more than usual in Vegas after the covid shutdown and felt like it was a bargain. Great discounts from Hertz with AAA .

It may be worth taking hotel shuttle from Airport and then start car rental a day later, possible at hotel, to save money. Same for returning.

Really helpful info for us brits, we have rented many times and always pressured into the insurance trap!
Got caught by the snow issue too! Ended up having to upgrade to a 4x4 for bigger cost too...
Thanks Tracey! Yeah. I hate the insurance pressure

LA has pretty good charging infrastructure if that's what you're getting at
