I love how Sacha Dhawan plays Doctor Who's Director in this, then becomes the Master in series 12. It's almost like the Master orchestrated the whole thing
3:54 - Current Dalek voice Nicholas Briggs playing original Dalek voice Peter Hawkins. A nice easer egg for New Who fans and Nick's chance to pay homage to the man who got him his dream job.
The inflections are all off. The farewell speech to Susan was subdued and sad, missing the way Hartnell played it. I mean, it wasn't horiffic, but... it wasn't that close, either.
Sorry, all I hear is his unwelcoming portrayal of his bitter old curmudgeon Game of Thrones character Walder Frey. I don't hear any trace of William Hartnell's Doctor in there. Maybe he was the closest facsimile they could find and he probably did the best job considering, but to say he nailed it or that he was perfect is exaggerating quite a bit. William Hartnell played it somewhat aloof and condescending at times, but he never came off as bitter and mean spirited the way David Bradley does.
Mister Groove - I think he has way less exaggerated inflections, Hartnell was rather intense, they spent a lot of time trying to soften him though so in some ways Bradley’s performance is more how he wanted to be.
@@timrob12 I mean they used the guy who played William Hartnell in the movie to play the actual First Doctor so it could work. I would say, if they did it, they should use the same budget and techniques to do the effects to try and duplicate the original as much as possible.
He was doing that after all, just pretending he is acting, but no acting really. He is a very good actor, maybe with a new script written specifically for him, he will put all together.
Of the four, I think the most identical resemblance is Jemma Powell as Jacqueline Hill (especially in black and white), right down to the voice. David Bradley looks like Hartnell, but the real Hartnell was much shorter and played the First Doctor with a distinctly soupy-sounding Edwardian public school voice.
I realize they added the Doctor dropping his scarf and the extra door openings in order to make the production seem bad, but I would have preferred they be more accurate. But overall they did a very good job!
Well, he plays the part of William Hartnell with all his heart and soul in this docudrama. When it comes to his performance as the 1st Doctor however he is very flat and doesn't give it any of the wonderful subtleties that Hartnell did. He did a much better job in the Twice Upon a Time, unfortunately they had him playing it very sexist there, so it still wasn't a true seeming version of the 1st Doctor. Oh well. At least he stepped up his game playing the 1st Doctor 2nd time out.
I like Bradley and am glad he's returning to the part, but where's the First Doctor's little half grin while speaking, all the theatrical facial expressions, the business he does with his hands and fidgety fingers, his greater mobility and physicality, his periodic imperiousness and arrogance, his silly giggling, his frequent "hmm?", and foremost the charm and whimsy of the character? I appreciate that Bradley for the most part more or less looks and sounds similar to Bill Hartnell, but he seems to still be missing a lot of the heart of his character. There was something magical and likeable behind the character's gruffness that Bradley still needs to fully find and I hope he does.
nobody would be perfect bradley is the next best thing if you accept the premise that the first doctor is back, you have to accept the new actor for what it is and just enjoy the nod to the first doctor and be happy ;)
I doubt Susan would be in it. Ben and Polly are a chance, but I dunno if they could even do that. I do wish Michael Craze hadn't fallen down those stairs though. Would've been great for him to see all these new episodes. ='-(
Well said! I think the difference is more evident to those of us that were pre-existing Hartnell fans, and pick up on the mannerisms and inflections that he infuses the part with.
Dimitri Bitu There IS a point! Not all of us are skilled at video editing, you know. Besides which, why go through the extra bother when the video could've been properly edited from the get-go when you uploaded it!
Having the episode and the reconstruction scenes from 'An Adventure in Space and Time' going together works, but I would have separated the pilot and pilot reconstruction into there own set. Two going at once is fine, four was a bit trickier. Still, excellent video.
i do think bradley is almost perfect as william hartnell but I think he plays him a little too hard, there's a certain whimsey to hartnell that bradley didn't quite get
There is a slight error, The reason Susan is wearing a different top is she wears a different top between the original Doctor Who Pilot and the The actual Second Pilot which was Broadcast.
Unbelievably confusing to have audio streams running at once like this (a cacophonous babble) and thus completely counter-productive to the aim in mind.
The scene is finished in the original and the AAISAT reconstruction is half way through - they're so laboured and don't do justice to the original performers! (But it was fun in context of the docudrama)
I'm taking in the "An Unearthly Child" bits as they've now been edited/removed from the 60th anniversary re-release cuz of this whole copyright issue with Stef Coburn. Like when they're rehearsing scenes, uttering dialogue while recording the first episode and Sydney Newman viewing the serial.
David Bradley played a good William Hartnell, but he wasn't very good as the First Doctor. His delivery and performance were flat, like he was just reciting the lines instead of actually playing the character.
I think that was deliberate. Hopefully he'll be better at Christmas - but it's a massive call to ask one actor to represent a character in the same style that a previous actor did. That's why Doctor Who has mostly avoided it.
Have you ever seen any comic book where the characters read a comic book? Don't the pictures in the "comic book-within-comic book" tend to be cruder or more cartoonish than the art in the actual story? It's a way of telling apart what's supposed to be a drawing in-universe and what isn't. This could be a similar case. As a way of telling apart what's acting in-universe (i.e. Bradley playing Hartnell playing The Doctor) and what isn't (i.e. Bradley playing Hartnell), the in-universe acting is made flatter than it actually was. Otherwise, there may not be much difference between Bradley's Hartnell and Bradley's Hartnell's Doctor.
I believe that was very much intentional, I view this as David Bradley playing William Hartnell playing The Doctor, instead of David Bradley playing The Doctor And in my opinion this was a good decision, and this immerses me more to the idea that that is William Hartnell playing The Doctor, and not David Bradley, because, and I apologise for redundancy, what we are seeing is David Bradley portraying William Hartnell portraying The Doctor, and not David Bradley's portrayal of The 1st Doctor
nakyer They didn't, he isn't showing the right episode. He's showing the unaired pilot, where Susan wore different, more alien clothes. If you compare the reconstruction with the pilot, it's spot on.
My thoughts on Bradley playing Hartnell were, and remain, that he is a great Hartnell, but a lousy First Doctor. The "recreation" scenes show this well - there's none of Hartnell's spark in them at all.
I was on your Charlie Chaplin video, and noticed someone asked you to make this, even though you'd never watched the show. After making this, have you?
No. I have a thing that if start any franchise, I have to watch and know everything (like I know everything about Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, etc). And Doctor Who is too much for me. Same reason I never watched any Star Trek. Maybe in the future. :)
dimitreze, the thing with Doctor Who is, that you can start Doctor Who with Series 1 back in 2005. It introduces you to everything you need to know. I've never needed to watch anything before.
Sure he did. His Eighth incarnation interacts with Susan three times in Big Finish audios - An Earthly Child, Relative Dimensions, and the two part Lucie Miller/To the Death.
I love how Sacha Dhawan plays Doctor Who's Director in this, then becomes the Master in series 12. It's almost like the Master orchestrated the whole thing
Still love that the lady yelling for the kids to come home as their dinner was getting cold, was actually Carol Anne Ford who played Susan in the show
And how Nicholas Briggs is playing Peter Hawkins.
There were lots of cameos - I didn't pick a single one until I read an article listing them all!
Carole ann ford had to write an E on the end of "carol"
Susan seemed the 60s version of Sarah Jane Smith 😆
Thank you. I've been trying to find her in the movie with no luck :D
3:54 - Current Dalek voice Nicholas Briggs playing original Dalek voice Peter Hawkins. A nice easer egg for New Who fans and Nick's chance to pay homage to the man who got him his dream job.
David Bradley nailed the First Doctor performance he was brilliant...he is perfect as the First Doctor!!!!
Better than Richard Hurndall.
Green Whovian I agree. Not perfect but fair enough.

Maybe they should use the cast of the movie to recreate the classic lost episodes of the original series. They seem really good at it.
THAT'S WHAT I HAVE BEEN SAYING FOR A WHILE NOW! I know Marco Polo uses the original TARDIS team and that's one serial EVERYONE wants to see back.

I loved all the performances in this. I hope they use these actors to re-create lost episodes.
It is extremely confusing to have both audio playing together, for a true comparison alternating the scenes would have been far more productive
it helps if you use a stereo sound
there's no purpose in alternate the scenes since anyone can do this with any player on the computer

I did the whole first scene again from scratch. Hahahaha.

I think there is a reason for that. I have a feeling it's adressed somewhere, but I can't remember where.
the BBC need to redo the 1st doctor story line that had the missing episodes with David Bradley playing the 1st
FUCK NO!!!
Michael McGrath why?
This video is like that Rick and Morty scene where there are multiple time streams playing at the same time! Trippy AF

Recreating moments from the 60s and trying to get them exactly in sync with the original footage is merely impossible.
