    Just watched a short of a tornado tearing a huge building apart. One of the only things you could see in the carnage was a 2x2 block of exhaust fan shroud just ZOOMING past the camera. I back out of the video and the first thing I see is "EXHAUST FAN PROBLEMS" lol

      I think I have a good solution for some of your problems. Require mandatory maintenance on all your customers. Also offer if they do that they will not be charged for emergency calls except for repair of the parts and I think a lot of your problems that you run into because of no maintenance will probably go away or be greatly reduced.

      Yes. The new intro was a bit too much. It didn’t set me up to expect a lesson from a good guy trying to take good care of customers, employees, and family while still earning a little profit.

    Back in the 70- 80's as a young tech I worked HVACR for a company established in 1938 metro service in San Antonio.
    We were radio dispatched. We also leased the tower and channels to the Bexar county sheriffs department.
    We gave priority to their traffic.
    I averaged 7 calls per day and there were 9 service trucks, and we had a speedy Opal Manta to deliver parts to us out in the field. All of us rotated running parts in it.
    It was a blast! Stick shift.
    It was like a paramilitary operaation
    Normally only 7 trucks went out and each of us had a district we serviced.
    It was so cool!

      Sadly it doesn't always work, like that one time a 24v contactor was wired into a 208v ice machine condenser.

    I always carried one of those segmented fiberglass fan belts from Graingers.
    Never needed to come back to replace it.

    We offered 24 hour service too.
    One of us would be on for emergency service.
    Most of the time nothing came in but once in awhile it did.
    I saved a school district about 140,000 dollars worth of prepped food one night about 2 am.
    Had to pick a lock to get in this massive cooler to fix a solenoid valve connection!

    The fan is off-center because when you tightened the belt, it flexed the sheet-metal bearing support toward the motor, so it is no longer square to the rest of the fan. That's probably why they left it loose.

      @@Qballl Of course, but it was a pretty quick "fix" that got them out of there. A solution would have been to loosen up the bolts holding the bearing and shaft, tilt it over the other way so when you get the right tension it is centered. Or, as done here - just get a new one.

    Taking that extra moment to pinpoint exactly what happened is so awesome! I do that with my customers anytime I see a repeat issue, or something amiss. It makes all the difference for my customers, and I always get positive feedback from it.

    Back then, I made a whopping 14 bucks per hour!
    The master tech made 17!
    Today, it's actually the same except the pay is much higher due to the loss of a dollars worth.
    That's called inflation.
    Henry Ford's model T cost 1 pound of gold.
    To this day, that's still about the cost of a vehicle.

    Chris I can’t tell you how many service calls I get the day after the hood cleaners visit. Guys around here like to hit the kitchen e-stop to kill power, tripping the MDP molded-case shunt breakers and then leave without resetting. Manager arrives the next morning panicking that there’s no power OR they don’t know why the breaker was tripped.

    I love the heater style until we run across the "2-phase" heater type. No way to do a 3-heater retrofit, so the whole thing has to be replaced...

    Chris, I am a long time field tech in various technologies. At each of my jobs, once I have "seen it all" I am guilty of "I know what it is, I'll fix it". I do look for the smoking gun, because if you don't, it will happen again. You being a business owner, your priorities are different, however the goal is the same. Make the customer almost forget you and why you are needed. But when the fecal matter collides with the air moving unit, they call you, knowing you will tell them the truth. Not just the unit in question, but all the other stuff on the roof. You avoid that "playoffs on a Friday night" call out in panic more than you think. Me, I learned to do a scheduled thorough required interval PM on my territory equipment, and surprisingly (at the time), I was not called out after hours but once or twice in 5 years for my equipment failing. Other techs, well... not so much. Your method is not only proven, but should be required on any of your employees. The tech may not get it, but there needs to be an "MCP-minimum call procedure", which eliminates a LOT of callbacks. Even their own mistakes get caught. If you have the customer overall history documented, when the tech reports in a solution for a known customer's unit, they should be able to answer 'What about the other POS AC that I worked on 2 months ago?'

      I am not. My dad was a service manager for many years for a copier company. He made it a requirement that all techs do the MCP. He even had team leaders ocassionally go behind techs and make sure all the items were done.

    Using a breaker for loading seems crude, perhaps a timed power switch on the unit for this purpose?

    Offer your hard won skills only to those that appreciate you.
    There will come a time in your career when you''ll need to fire some of your distant customers.
    You are an HVACR man.
    Not a professional driver.
    If they were good, find a local guy and vet them.
    Likewise he can swap his distant customers with you closer to you.
    You'll make more money, less headaches and be more productive in the trade.
    Remember, they are just like you if they know the trade.
    You have no idea of how few field service guys are out there for so many people.
    Become an active member of RSES.
    If not available in your area, start a chapter.
    'Better service through knowledge " is the motto.
    Says an old retired master.

    Fan F has slotted holes in bearing bracket. Should slide the bearing bracket up to get proper clearance on bottom. Then realign motor pulley.
    The first fan with the motor pulley at end of shaft might have slid down when they adjusted the belt tension on the last belt change.

    I have my store's water heater set to 140°F. It's a Navien tankless gas water heater, and I like my dish-washing water HOT. Having piping-hot water in a garden hose, running from a hose bib in the mop closet, does an AMAZING job cleaning out gross trash cans, and it can't be beat for thoroughly washing our rolling under-counter ice bins. Someone smart (me 12 years ago) bought the store a hot-water-capable garden hose and hot-water-capable nozzle because the regular lowest-price-possible outdoor garden hose is simply not good enough for repeated use. I was actually surprised when I was rehired and discovered nobody had stolen the hose over the years!
    For the past two weeks, our hot water pressure is roughly a trickle from a wide-open tap; it takes up to two hours to fill my sanitizer sink. Tuesday, we had ZERO hot water, and nobody followed the health codes and/or company policy to shut the store down when there's no hot water.
    Well, the heater's indicator panel was lit as it should be, didn't show any errors. Power-cycling via the circuit breaker didn't cure the problem. I went out and checked our three big LPG tanks, they were at 80% capacity. So I whip out my cell phone, punch into Google "navien tankless water heater not heating water" and the very first result was from a smaller plumbing/HVAC company explaining the problem was most likely a mineral-crusted flow sensor, the temporary solution is to manually operate the pressure relief valve to drain the tank somewhat. So I flip the relief valve, hot water drains down the pipe to the mop sink, I hear the inducer motor kick on, then I hear ignition, and wouldn't you know it, it's fixed and so far hasn't had a problem since. Hot water pressure is still abysmal, but at least we have it; I assume the Navien is clogged with calcium and lime like everything else in the store.
    Andy Saves The Day (As Usual) Because Nobody Else Can Be Bothered To Do A Google Search Or Ask Siri A Question. 🤦‍♂ If there wasn't so much 🐮💩 involved in being a Manager, I would've stepped up to be Manager, 9 Store Managers ago. Sure, I'd have to repair everything in the entire store myself - at my own expense - because the franchise doesn't give a crap, but at least everything would be WORKING!
    Oh, and this past Monday my infamous rack oven was baking croissants at 119°F instead of 350°F for a while. Didn't bother telling anyone, after three years I know there's no point. They've put more than $50k into repairs - in two years - into a fifteen year old (or more) oven that is still being made by Baxter for $25,500 BRAND NEW, and they've basically said we just need to deal with it from now on, just increase the baking time. A new oven was NOT in the over-$1M-budget when we got "renovated" in December, I guess. Looking around the store, I don't know where half of that money went.
    Not my money, right? Sure, but I lost out on two weeks' pay because of this "renovation" that was supposed to blow our minds, it was so over-hyped that my BS alarm was freaking out and I said so, and I was assured my fears were unfounded, literally everything in the store was going to be replaced with up-to-date and NEW equipment. It miraculously finished three weeks ahead of schedule, and I return only to find the franchise owner spent a fortune to have a slightly-polished turd with WALL TILE INSTALLED ON THE LOBBY FLOOR so it is always slick when wet... Or humid... Or dry and clean.
    Power cord on the Delfield sandwich station still has damaged outer insulation. Three years and counting on that Final Destination moment, when someone cleaning behind it is pushing it back into place (likely me, because nobody else will clean behind it), and the cord gets jammed between the floor and the sheet metal falling off the back of the unit, and ⚡🚑, presumably followed shortly (pun intended) thereafter by 🧑‍⚖💰. (Maybe I should chant "1, 2, 3, Please Don't Blow Up!" when I move it?)

    14:28 Why is the wheel hitting something? At 12:50 you can see the bearing support flex why you squeeze the belt, so tightening the belt tilted the shaft
    I still don't fully understand why everything "made in America" is just stamped sheet metal. And with the trend of everything getting made more cheaply, they just make the metal thinner

    Outsider question: When Chris is saying "cook fan" is that just an exhaust fan meant to handle grease? Or is it just called that because it services the kitchen?

    Those small belts you can use your 3/8 allen wrench and hook it in the pulley and take the long end. See where it lines up on the other pulley. All of our work is in house. All my fans have 2 spare belts. Fresh air units, ive gotten away from the metal filters. Had some racks made and use the filter material. Same as the a/c units take. Make sure on the fresh air. Go inside turn off the fans and remove the grills above the cooking equipment. You won't believe how much dirt gets by the metal mesh filters. Do not ever do this with the fans running, Ask me how I know.

    19:02 I suspect that Grease Trap hanging on by one bolt might also be a source for the grease on the roof at that low point...

    That LB (90 elbow) is totally illegal. There shall be no electrical connections in a LB connector.

    Ii never charged OT.
    I charged 120 for the first hour then 90 every hour after that.
    Service was 7/24/365
    Learn triage.
    80% of my calls were done in the first hour and 80% were finished in 20 minutes or less.
    If I touched it they would get 1 year for labor on repair.
    I had almost no callbacks.
    You will get that skill, but it takes years to perfect. I began inn the mid 70's and retired in 2013 due to rheumatoid arthritis .

    well the only thing i'd change about your videos, (just nit picking) i'd love to see actual work done not just talk about it then cut to the work being already done. when you comment about it in your office after the video concludes, i usually ditch out. just saying. other than that (like i said just nitpicking) your videos are amazing love how informative you are and how you explain everything and very well. I work in IT at a HVAC company with multiple locations in the pac nw. i've heard some stories from our techs....
