    "The First" is easily my favorite episode in the series. When the "bad hulk" throws the serum against the wall, the devastation on David's face is just so sad. All the searching he had done to find a cure and he was so close. In a moment, it's all gone and he is alone once again. Heartbreaking.

      Definitely sad..made me mad too.i wish David had cured himself first. Del frye would have been killed eventually by the police or the townies. So David would have been free. That's what was his downfall, he cared to..too much for people which is cool but, there is a limit.

    In the episode “Homecoming” from season 3, David reunites with his father and sister during the Thanksgiving season. There’s a moment when his sister, Helen asks him “Why did you even bother to come back here?” David says “I uh…couldn’t spend another Thanksgiving alone.” Bixby’s delivery of that line is so heartbreaking.

    One of the saddest and strangest episodes is "The Psychic" which co-starred Bill Bixby's then wife, Brenda Benet. She plays Annie Caplan, a psychic who is contemplating sucide as she believes her gift is a curse. There are so many strange and meta moments that parallel the marriage of Benet and Bixby. One such parallel is that the death of a teenage boy within the episode ominously pre-tells the death of their own child. Also the untimely death of Benet by sucide after her depression. Perhaps the saddest and most meta/prophetic aspect of the episode is the ending where Benet's character catches a glimpse of David's obviously bleak future as he walks away to the lonely man theme. It's all just so sad.

    • @Janovus
      @Janovus Год назад +2

      It is also an interesting 6 degree of separation fact that Brenda Benet, at the time of her suicide, was having a lesbian affair with a young 17 year old teenager by the name of Tammy Bruce. She later grew up to be first a leader in the National Organization for Women and later, a prominent conservative radio, tv, host and writer. Tammy herself would have a nervous breakdown since the suicide actually occurred in her presence. Brenda Benet shot herself in a bathroom of her apartment, while Tammy was in the outer room. Later, while Tammy was recovering in the hospital from her break down, she said Bill Bixby visited her and was very kind..

    The final Hulk-Out in Part 2 of The First is definitely the most heart-wrenching moment of the series after Married. Banner realizes that he's lost his last chance at a cure and is completely overwhelmed by emotion and adrenaline. The trigger hits, but it's a full minute before Hulk fully manifests, and it is a rare occasion that Hulk does not appear in rage. Indeed, he also has tears in his eyes just like Banner did. It was a glorious moment, and one of my favorite scenes.
    One issue I always had with the series is that it tended to use pain as the catalyst more often than strictly anger. Yes, pain is far more cinematic, but it downplays the emphasis of anger -- or what is really adrenaline -- on the metamorphosis that the series sets up in the background. The pilot was one of the few episodes that actually did use adrenaline as the trigger, and so did Married, using the same basic cause: Banner's memories of Laura and his loss. Married, of course, adds the new fear of losing Carolyn. And the series never really went back to that for any reason. How horrifying would it be if Banner is all established with a new identity ... and he has that nightmare again.

    • @Dhampir101980
      @Dhampir101980 Год назад +3

      Adrenaline was used as the trigger several times beyond just those you mentioned. They include “ death in the family” when David is in the quicksand, “747, where both Hulk outs are caused by fear, “The Hulk Breaks Las Vegas “, David is about to be buried alive in a pit and is terrified, “the Beas within”, where David is about to be injected with an overdose of an aggression drug and becomes afraid, “ my favorite magician “, David is panicked by being trapped in a water filled tank.
      “Free Fall “, where David’s parachute is shot at after he jumps out a plane, and he’s scared. “ captive night “, Fear strikes again as David is trapped in a falling elevator shaft, “ metamorphosis “ David hallucinates that the Hulk is going to smash him, “mystery man part 2” David becomes stressed trying to save McGee from wolves and then a forest fire, “ Of Models and Murder “, David is frustrated because he can’t free himself from being crushed in a car compactor, “ broken image”, Fear from being entombed in concrete,” homecoming “, anger caused by a nightmare of his mother’s death,then fear that his father’s plane will crash.
      A pain induced Hulk out was the easiest thing to write, but stress/ adrenaline was used plenty without Pain ever being involved . These aren’t all the examples, by the way.

    I agree with your picks. The two saddest in my eyes is losing Eliana in the pilot (because he changes during her death and doesn't hear her say "I love you") . He later tells her that he loves her too at her grave.
    The second was in "Married " where he lost Caroline Fields. He again doesn't get to save her and she dies in his arms as the hulk. He doesn't realize this until his transformation back.
    The other was (like you said) "The First" when he lost the only normalcy he could have had in ridding himself of the Hulk. It was the Fry-Hulk who stopped his only chance at curing himself

      @@kevinmiller6380 Yeah, that was definitely a sad moment. It is depressing to me since Bill Bixby died before he could bring the Hulk back to TV. I think he wanted to make sure Frye was cured because he was a threat to others, that and the writers didn't want to cure Banner, of course. It would be no more show, but I think the threat issue might have been the reason given. Have to watch it again because that is a good question. Frustrating stuff like that always happens on shows.

      Maybe the episode of him coming home to his sister and father is sad because he couldn't spend I think it was Thanksgiving and Jack Mcgee shows up so David was forced to leave. But more so I think his father when he saw him as Hulk said run David run and the Hulk was so enraged with emotion.

      I'm not sure. It is one of the saddest moments of the series. Too bad Bixby didn't get to film another one to bring the Hulk back.
