What you said about Big Show is what I call the Dolph Ziggler effect. Dolph was so good that he made everyone he worked with look like a million bucks. He was so good at it that it was all they wanted him to do after a while. He spent most of his WWE run putting guys over, despite the fact that he was one of the best workers in the company. Sometimes you have to be selfish if you want to get anywhere in the business.

I ran the ropes at an indie show in my home town once and that shit was intense. You hit those ropes wrong and even that can mess you up. Always had a lot of respect for wrestlers but even the smallest of things they do can hurt
I learned how to take simple back and front bumps back in the day. One or two aren't a big deal, but taking them a dozen-plus times 300 nights a year has to suck.

I saw The Rock take some on concrete at Wrestlemania 15 when Steve Austin was knocking him down with punches and thought how rough it must feel to fly back as fast as you can on something like that and then immediately spring back up. I'm glad it was mentioned that Goldberg actually CAN do a lot of moves. Back in WCW, he was always doing crazy moves, and a lot of them were more technical than other people I was seeing at the time. I mean, outside of the Luchas and lighter weight guys. But, for a heavyweight, he was doing some really cool moves and even introducing MMA style sweeps and subs. I hate when people say that he only has a few moves cause it just isn't true. I can definitely see that he was stiff AF... but that did make it feel more real even though I knew it was pre-planned back in the 90s. He is much better skillwise than he gets credit for even if he was stiff and eventually did become a very limited wrestler. But, when I started watching him, he made shit look like it was for REAL even if I knew it wasn't. I was able to suspend my disbelief because of that raw aggression. And his willingness to hurt himself to make a spot look as real as possible. I know it's not great for business for people to do that all of the time.... but it was certainly awesome to watch with him while it lasted. Not counting his return. I choose to ignore everything past his first retirement from WWE. His first match back against Brock was cool to watch, but we all know there was no way it would have played out that way for real cause they're both the same. Brock is just younger. So, Goldberg squashing an ex-UFC HW champion just seemed insane. It was a dope spectacle for a few minutes as a throwback for us OG Goldberg fans, but I couldn't truly suspend disbelief for that one.

The Big Show part is so true. He was the closest thing to Andre and as Stevie said he was so athletic and could sell big for people that it hindered him. A 500lb man getting lifted and slammed.

I have really been enjoying these Steven Richard videos lately, I have been looking for new shoot interviews and commentary to listen to while I'm on the clock at amazon bored out of my mind and I have to say Stevie has a very welcoming voice and his perspective has made some 12 hour shifts go by a little faster, I also like the John Madden style dissection of past past events and matches on his touch screen, also who knew Stevie was an IT man, that would've been a gimmick to get over with! The Hacker Steven Richards!! Come out in a guy faux mask, screw with the lights, sound system, pyro, and titan tron to distract his opponent for cheap heat and quick wins!

If I remember right Goldberg had so many people stiffing him at the start he just thought that was how it was done. like there were several guys who didn't want to go down for the spear so he had to bring them down the hard way. It reminds me of a story with Jim cornet and Bobby Lashley in ovw. bobby had to put Jim through a table and Jim asked bobby to go easy on him and not hurt him. Bobby did it and Jim said it was one of the most painful things he had ever went through because bobby nearly broke him in half. Jim asked Bobby "did you go easy on me?" and bobby replied "yes" so Jim went and tore the rest of the locker room a new one because he figured out so many of the guys were sandbagging Bobby and Bobby didn't realize it so when he slammed Jim in comparison it was him going easy.
@@socalkylex I know I remember right about the spear part as a few wrestlers including ddp said that several guys tried to make the spear look bad and tried to resist so Goldberg got used to hitting them hard so when someone cooperated with him and didn't resist he spiked himself on the head.
I first learned of Stevie Richards in WCW. I always thought he was like a poor man’s Shawn Michaels. They both used the super kick. They had similar hair, similar builds, similar looks, similar voices. Even their ring names are similar. Shawn-Stevie, Michaels-Richards.

I was first attuned to him in the RTC gimmick, as a schoolboy. Imagine how strange it felt, when I bought the ECW tapes! A true gentleman and a consummate performer. I wrestled on the indies for 10 years in early 2000 and worked in a 20x20 ring mainly, but one promotion had a 10x10. I'm 6'2. Every move had to be corner and it was still tight. Not to mention running the ropes was just one foot in the middle of the ring before hitting the other side haha I love your channel.
We all criticise Goldberg for being stiff and hurting people, but praise Stan Hansen and Brusier Brody for the same. I feel bad for the people in the ring with him, but Goldberg was a lot more exciting than the cooperative gymnastics routines I see so much today.

Him and Sting had some slow times and had to drive up and down the road in Memphis and Midsouth while not making a ton of money. Warrior quit and split for WCCW. Sting stated in Midsouth, got off the roids and Eddie Gilbert taught him how to be a wrestler.

I believe Goldberg meant well but WCW obviously didn’t train him long enough in the Power Plant before they pushed him on TV. Once Regal had that match that exposed Bill, WCW should’ve sent him back to the Power Plant to improve his performance as a worker. By the time Goldberg got to WWE , many people got in his ear and I think he was kinda jaded and a little arrogant. That’s why he didn’t care as much about injuring guys because people told him it was part of the job, which it is. That person didn’t follow up that statement by saying the talents can minimize the risk of injuries by working safely.
Yeah, I don't blame Goldberg as much as others because all these people should have taught him better in the first place. It's like telling an alcoholic not to drink after they were taught to drink and then a lifetime of drinking.
@@JesusFreak89 Bischoff was the main person to blame along with other veteran agents who all saw Goldberg and that he was limited in the ring. That match he had with Regal showed he couldn’t wrestle at all. If we the fans saw that, you can’t tell me Bischoff and all the others didn’t see it too. They sacrificed Goldberg’s long term potential for short term success in pushing a new star but doing so before he was actually ready.

I looked into the match from WWE's channel first video i see when searching Goldberg Steven Richards I think the Spear and Jackhammer you took from Goldberg is used as the animation for Goldberg's finishers for WWE Smackdown! Here Comes the Pain good job on both parties for making it look good
Boy if I did not know any better, I would swear you were having flashbacks while telling this story just based on the fear in your eyes alone while regaling us with it.
Those explosive hard moves is why everyone loved him. The fact that it looked like it hurts is what set him apart from other matches. An edge Sphere and a Goldberg Sphere just looked like completely different moves, and it made it believable that he could end a match so quick.
I will say though that roughness actually translated into something in the ring. To this day, no ones spears-- not Roman, Edge, Bronn-- no one spears like Goldberg
The gore was a pretty damn good spear lol but that was in the same days as Goldberg. Also breakers spear is insane too. I agree edge and Roman’s don’t look as devastating
Golberg made a mistake of not wanting to work with Jericho at WCW. Not only would Chris have put him over even more, but I think he could have helped him with his mechanics.
Vets that actually worked with Goldberg made up his best matches! Hulk Hogan! Sting! Lex Luger! DDP! Booker T! Scott Steiner! All guys that worked with Goldberg and had his best matches with them! Also all guys that have had his back when being criticized for the Bret Shart shit!

No one that ever had a match with Chris Benoit said he wasn't stiff and rough to work with. All those Japanese wrestlers worked stiff as hell, and if you weren't ready for it, you were going to get roughed up. Guess what, some of the best wrestlers in the world are from Japan, and some of the best wrestlers in the world, worked a hell o' stiff. Old school wrestlers don't mind being stiff, and some like the Steiners preferred it. If Stevie had a problem with it, don't wrestle the guy. I really don’t care how good of a “worker” Goldberg was. Growing up, he was easily my favorite. He was raw animal power before Lesnar, and so explosive. He looked like a million dollars and he was believable.
I think it’s nice that an agent asks a wrestler if they’ll put the other guy over but they aren’t really asking are they? Like you could say “No” but I suspect that may go poorly for you.
Bill always gets mentioned when talking about the most overrated wrestlers. But the hype absolutely fit. His man-of-few-words persona. His single catchphrase. His entrance. His 3-4 move sequence. And the streak. Fans weren't out there saying he had any mic skills, or that he had even decent in-ring ability. His boiled-down character delivered consistently on only a few aspects, but each one had a visceral connection with fans and he was firmly tapped into those wells.

If I remember right Goldberg had so many people stiffing him at the start he just thought that was how it was done. like there were several guys who didn't want to go down for the spear so he had to bring them down the hard way. It reminds me of a story with Jim cornet and Bobby Lashley in ovw. bobby had to put Jim through a table and Jim asked bobby to go easy on him and not hurt him. Bobby did it and Jim said it was one of the most painful things he had ever went through because bobby nearly broke him in half. Jim asked Bobby "did you go easy on me?" and bobby replied "yes" so Jim went and tore the rest of the locker room a new one because he figured out so many of the guys were sandbagging Bobby and Bobby didn't realize it so when he slammed Jim in comparison it was him going easy.
I heard that too. It makes a lot of sense that he would have developed that way.

@@socalkylex I know I remember right about the spear part as a few wrestlers including ddp said that several guys tried to make the spear look bad and tried to resist so Goldberg got used to hitting them hard so when someone cooperated with him and didn't resist he spiked himself on the head.

I first learned of Stevie Richards in WCW. I always thought he was like a poor man’s Shawn Michaels. They both used the super kick. They had similar hair, similar builds, similar looks, similar voices. Even their ring names are similar.

@@theboombodyin a few early wcw matches, he displayed an extensive moveset. But once they (wcw) put him on the run (and later wwe) , it was spear and jackhammer. But anyone suggesting he only had 2 or 3 moves, did not see anything of his early stuff. Look at hogan work in japan
I adore every video of Stevie. Everyone seems to say the same thing about him; that he’s incapable of recrimination, and he always thinks the best of people. I was first attuned to him in the RTC gimmick, as a schoolboy. Imagine how strange it felt, when I bought the ECW tapes! A true gentleman and a consummate performer. I might be bold enough, to say he’s an unsung hero.
Goldberg was a football player who fell back into wrestling.
His spear was devastating because that's how he hit ball carriers (he was a DT).

I wrestled on the indies for 10 years in early 2000 and worked in a 20x20 ring mainly, but one promotion had a 10x10. I'm 6'2. Every move had to be corner and it was still tight. Not to mention running the ropes was just one foot in the middle of the ring before hitting the other side haha I love your channel.
We all criticise Goldberg for being stiff and hurting people, but praise Stan Hansen and Brusier Brody for the same.
I feel bad for the people in the ring with him, but Goldberg was a lot more exciting than the cooperative gymnastics routines I see so much today.
It's the idea that they didn't pay there dues, guys like Warrior and Goldberg. That's where a lot of the bitterness comes from.

Him and Sting had some slow times and had to drive up and down the road in Memphis and Midsouth while not making a ton of money. Warrior quit and split for WCCW. Sting stated in Midsouth, got off the roids and Eddie Gilbert taught him how to be a wrestler.

I believe Goldberg meant well but WCW obviously didn’t train him long enough in the Power Plant before they pushed him on TV. Once Regal had that match that exposed Bill, WCW should’ve sent him back to the Power Plant to improve his performance as a worker. By the time Goldberg got to WWE , many people got in his ear and I think he was kinda jaded and a little arrogant. That’s why he didn’t care as much about injuring guys because people told him it was part of the job, which it is. That person didn’t follow up that statement by saying the talents can minimize the risk of injuries by working safely.
Yeah, I don't blame Goldberg as much as others because all these people should have taught him better in the first place. It's like telling an alcoholic not to drink after they were taught to drink and then a lifetime of drinking.
@@JesusFreak89 Bischoff was the main person to blame along with other veteran agents who all saw Goldberg and that he was limited in the ring. That match he had with Regal showed he couldn’t wrestle at all. If we the fans saw that, you can’t tell me Bischoff and all the others didn’t see it too. They sacrificed Goldberg’s long term potential for short term success in pushing a new star but doing so before he was actually ready.

@Benforuk he looked like a superstar. I'll give you that, but if he wanted to really hurt people, he was in the wrong profession. Pro wrestling hurts enough already as is so it doesn't help prolong a person's career if you're in the ring with someone who is injuring people. There were stretches where he was hurting himself even more because he didn't know how to perform in the ring safely.
There is an interview somewhere where he actually mentions this. He didn't for the LONGEST TIME.

Boy if I did not know any better, I would swear you were having flashbacks while telling this story just based on the fear in your eyes alone while regaling us with it.
Those explosive hard moves is why everyone loved him. The fact that it looked like it hurts is what set him apart from other matches. An edge Sphere and a Goldberg Sphere just looked like completely different moves, and it made it believable that he could end a match so quick.
What's in a pro wrestling starter pack? I heard Eric Bischoff mention it also.
Stevie is so knowledgeable when it comes to the wrestling business, I could listen to him talk wrestling all day.
I will say though that roughness actually translated into something in the ring. To this day, no ones spears-- not Roman, Edge, Bronn-- no one spears like Goldberg
The gore was a pretty damn good spear lol but that was in the same days as Goldberg. Also breakers spear is insane too. I agree edge and Roman’s don’t look as devastating

Golberg made a mistake of not wanting to work with Jericho at WCW. Not only would Chris have put him over even more, but I think he could have helped him with his mechanics.
Vets that actually worked with Goldberg made up his best matches! Hulk Hogan! Sting! Lex Luger! DDP! Booker T! Scott Steiner! All guys that worked with Goldberg and had his best matches with them! Also all guys that have had his back when being criticized for the Bret Shart shit!

I got nothing but respect for Stevie Richards, but I'm sorry, his take on Goldberg I don't agree with at all. Not every wrestler has the same style, and plenty of old school wrestlers worked stiff. No one that ever had a match with Chris Benoit said he wasn't stiff and rough to work with. All those Japanese wrestlers worked stiff as hell, and if you weren't ready for it, you were going to get roughed up. Guess what, some of the best wrestlers in the world are from Japan, and some of the best wrestlers in the world, worked a hell o' stiff.
Old school wrestlers don't mind being stiff, and some like the Steiners preferred it. If Stevie had a problem with it, don't wrestle the guy. Richards never personally liked Goldberg, and that's why he shits on him every chance he gets.

And the streak. Fans weren't out there saying he had any mic skills, or that he had even decent in-ring ability. His boiled-down character delivered consistently on only a few aspects, but each one had a visceral connection with fans and he was firmly tapped into those wells.
