This poor old cobbled up amp finally found someone who could fix all it's problems. Terry to the rescue! Like your solution to the rewiring. Your customer should be quite satisfied at the quality of repairs done. But he should get a better line of tubes.
Thanks for that, just what I needed. I bought a built Mojotone blackface deluxe, and it has a tiny bit of hum, maybe "normal" for a tube amp, but I will put in the brass now that I know how, and probably get some RG174 for signal runs as well. But, there is a bad hum in the reverb section. I just need some room to set up a bench and dig in, I have the equipment and should be able to track it down.
Cool walk thru and fix Terry..Learning new stuff as always....Tony was honest with the sound, it's hard to duplicate; so emulate is what we have nowadays...Great job..Thanks for more expertise shared..Ed..uk..😀
Really nice job Terry. I think what Tony was seeing is a slight lack of warmness. Its a little too crisp and bright, and I agree the JJ tubes are likely the reason. Really nice job as usual my friend
Beautiful work, Terry... as usual. You spent so much time on this job. Just seeing your attention to detail on the brass plate with the notches for the nuts, for example, makes me think you either lost money on this project, or you have a very generous and understanding customer. I like your touch with the filament terminal board.
Amp sounds amazing. If Tony thought it was a real Fender he'd be raving. That's the way our brains are wired. He knows it's not a "real" fender so he doesn't think it sounds right. If he did a double blind test against a real Fender I'd be curious to see what he says.
I was thinking the same thing. I bet it sounds a lot better than a fender deluxe reissue. Jjs aren't my favorite tube and I wonder what speaker is being used, and is that speaker even in the cab?
Yup. Great work by Terry as usual. His buddy however, is suffering confirmation bias, and didn't even take the speaker (and state of break-in) into account.
If he was Larry Carlton or Robben Ford or Eric C. I would take his words to heart. He plays a few chords and a few stock licks and makes his pronouncement...???? Maybe he's a better guitarist than what he is playing in this clip...maybe not.
@@edwardebel1847 it's not about how good of a guitarist you are it's about how our brains are wired. We're born with internal biases. I wouldn't even trust Eric Clapton or Robben Ford if it wasn't to double-blind test.
Another highly educational exploration of a classic style amp. As regards the tone, I take Tony's point: if it were an original it would have an RCA or similar GZ34 rectifier and power tubes running 415V on the plates. Why not try it with some NOS tubes if you have some kicking around in the shed? And push the bias a tad to see if they come to life.
I built one of these but I went with the Tone Clone transformers and good tubes (can’t remember what I used in mine and I’m too lazy to go look at the moment) and it sounds pretty amazing. If you’re going to put the time and effort in to one of these, it’s worth it to upgrade from the stock stuff Mojotone offers. And that’s not a knock on them, they are trying to keep it affordable for hobbyists
Very nice improvement on the amp! Today’s transformers, capacitors and resistors are equal or better than originals. Fender used basic stuff of the day they could get at a good price. Pots, jacks and other parts are the same. Circuit design is a known quantity and is not difficult to follow. The toughest variable is the tubes but that is manageable if you are chose well. You can not only equal the originals, you can exceed them. Careful grounding and lead dress will give you an amp with all the goodness of the originals with a quieter and more reliable amp. The bias circuit on Blackface amps was a bit undersized. F&T 22’s in the power supply work well and are much more trustworthy than vintage caps.
I use TAD's on my Princeton and home built Champ....Original's on the Princeton were JJ's and had issues with the originals and replacement sets...went to TAD's and no issues what-so-ever.
I went to Amp School I built a Mojo Super reverb...Its all new Part needs to break in...It was just Parts Now it's a Amp it will sound Better in Time Right Terry
TERRY do you have a Heathkit HW-101 HF SSB Transceiver 80-10 Meters .for sale. or do you ever find them at ham fest.i'm looking for .Thank you kind Sir. Chuck
I took my mojotone DR kit and got rid of the orange drops and used Sozo blue and also used sozo mica caps. I ordered all new solid core cloth wire to color code it to vintage specs. My amp sounds nothing like this amp. I would replace the caps first of all.
But for him to say it as good as it’s going to get is wrong. Changing caps and tubes and breaking in the caps and good quality tubes will get this amp so close you won’t hear a difference between it and a vintage blackface. That amps still doesn’t sound right.
@@dyamariv3628 Orange Drops are expensive but that doesn't mean they are good......but people that don't know anything always associate cost with quality.......and its foolish.

Maybe doesn’t sound as good as an original. But there are a million pedals you can stick in front to warm up the signal and make it sound much better. So stand-alone won’t quite make it, but stick a good pedal as a cheat and you’re good to go!
Hate the sound of those caps across the full board - I use an allesandro oil - orange cap and silver mica in my tone stack, much better note definition across the spectrum.
Hey Terry big fan of your channel just wanted to bring it to your attention that mojo tone has a video series about this Amp kit where the technician in this video kind of contradicts what you were saying about that brass plate. ruclips.net/video/OX30CrsicA4/видео.html Check it out and see what you think I have heard builders of this kit say that is a matter of preference more than anything on whether you use this plate in terms of the whole vintage feel. Start watching around the 10 minute mark up to about the 11 minute mark. Your thoughts?

Nice work, Terry! Good to see you working on a tube amps again. These sort of cleanup jobs are always frustrating. But you handled it with class, bro.

That is a great sounding amp and Fender Telecaster!
I agree Sandra. That Tele sounds gorgeous on the neck pickup. I wonder what pickups are in it?
Love your videos Terry! One question I have is why didn't you land the ground on the Bias Pot to the Brass Strip as well?
Great work as always.

Sounded good to me. Nice sustain 🤷♂️
Where do you buy the teflon coated wire?
Terry do you suspect that was the wire used in the amp shipped with the kit, or something the kit builder came up with?
Nice repair video 👍🙂 Which wire strippers would you recommend for the green teflon wire please ?

Yes I have one, does it need to work or are you looking for a project
So where is part one, I couldn't find it.
Awesome video. Sounded good.
20 AWG for filaments or 22 AWG??? Which is the new green wore used? I am confused ....
Used 20ga green teflon jacket, Mentioned 22, but went with 20
Great !!!
Sort of Blue jean blues. But it needs to be overdrive. To realky hear it's tone.

Yes they are way too bright especially in these amps.
