MGL MINI EFIS - UPDATE PROBLEMS? - PILOT VLOG

- I was wondering if anybody could help me with my MGL MINI EFIS Firmware update problems. I thought I had followed the instructions but I couldn't seem to upload the 2.06 version.
Any information would be gratefully accepted - the jodelflyer@gmail.com
I am not a qualified flying instructor nor do I ever claim to be a very good pilot. I fly for fun and basically record for my own interest and review but upload because a number of people suggested that I should. I do try to edit for enjoyment and story telling and this means that some content is not always included.

A bit of a different one this week but if anyone has any ideas they would be appreciated. Thanks for watching.
The joys of software and glitches. That weather looked interesting and your solar panel comment made me laugh Tim. I always hate doing firmware updates.
Thanks for watching Giles. I expect I have done something wrong somewhere along the line but what I didn’t film was all of the other combinations I had tried.
@@JodelFlyer my little Oudie system had a brain fart on a firmware update the other day. All resolved now. I'm guessing you are still struggling?
@@GolfFoxtrot22 Life has been extremely hectic this week and I have not had a chance to check out more.
Hi Tim - I agree with the other comments about extracting the contents of the zip file first. I don't know the MGL unit, but suspect you should back up or save your previous system to your 'old' card, put the contents of the zip file on the new card and reboot holding the two buttons down (force boot from card and not memory). Hope that helps.
Thank you very much for the input Stu, much appreciated.
There is nothing more frustrating than following tech instructions to the letter and the expected result never appears, and having followed to the letter it is hard to understand just what went wrong. I always find the help from a teenager helps either they interpret the instructions differently or input quicker and it works. The suggestion from MB seems a good one. Good luck Tim I think you are going to need it.
Thank you. I am a bit of an IT dinosaur and I need all the help I can get!
Thanks Tim. I hope you’ve managed to get things sorted.
I had lots of advice which has helped.
Thanks for this video Tim. I need to do mine at some stage too. Seems a bit of a faff especially if you have to recalibrate the fuel senders! PilotAware used to be a similar faff until I created the updater. I can feel an updater for the MGL coming on to now!
Thank you. There is a lot I have not connected but I am very pleased with the unit which I have been using for some time now.
Hi Tim, nice video! After many weeks watched one of your films again. I always think that one day I would like to land on that grass strip 👏😀
It would be good to see you. The only issue is that I believe your machine is technically a microlight and therefore outside of our planning consent. I know this is an absurd restriction bearing in mind modern developments but until we can get it changed we are stuck with it. Originally the local authority put in the clause to stop weight shift 2 strokes.
@@JodelFlyer What a pity. 😔
What do you mean with the last sentence/stop weight shift?
I wonder why it is Tim , that the older I become the less confident and comfortable I am in programming and setting up this sort of thing , and I had a long work life working with electronics and such things . I’ve since come to the conclusion that that’s why I have a 12 yr old grandson , he seems to have no trouble in helping out his Grandad with such things for which I’m forever grateful .
Very true David! Hope you are all well and coping with your lockdown!
@@JodelFlyer . Thanks Tim . We are both well , the lockdown has tightened further , and the path out to freedom seems to get further away by the day .
I wish we could tinker with ours but under our certification we can't even update our system ourselves, saying that I've always said I wouldn't want to fly anything I had a hand in fixing :-) Enjoyable video Tim, thanks.
Thanks for watching Terry. RUclips community coming together to make suggestions which should help.
Technology is fantastic when it works but a nightmare when something changes or goes wrong. Hope you manage to get to the bottom of the problem Tim
Thank you. Had lots of suggestions thank you but no chance to go and check them out yet!
Nice vid, Tim! 👍🏻 I believe the binary data should be extracted first. That .FW file should be in the root folder of the SD card.
Thanks for watching Jolmer. It’s nice when our YT community comes together!
@@JodelFlyer Yes and you're welcome! 👍🏻
I am sure someone else has probably said something better, but I think once you down load the zip file you have to open it up to extract the contents and then copy those over to the SD card as the MGL will not have soft ware to open a Zip File. I may be wronge but I had a simular issue with an update on something else.
I did not go to the fly in either as the weather here was pants.
Thanks for the call Algy. I will try it next time I go over. It sounds like that is the answer.
Might have to "format" the USB stick to a specific format. (Over writes all data).
Download zip file to usb and open into usb also. No copy paste. Then try it.
Wish I could help, Tim.. I know nothing!!! Enjoyed the flying though 👌👍
Thank you Kevin. The responses have been great and very useful. Glad you liked the flying.
This has happened to me updating software into the uAvionx AV-30-E. After I "updated firmware" to the latest I lost OAT, the barometric pressure fights the know when turning. It has a mind of its own. After spending tons of time trying to fix calling uAvionix I gave up. My advise is when you have any device working DO NOT EVER UPDATE ANYTHING! LOL no matter what the FAA says or otherwise. "Modernity" is gone wrong. Thank God I have an steam gauge altimeter to fly. Screw uAvionix! I was thinking about the MGL EXTREME MINI EFIS now that I hear what happened to you. Screw MGL as well! LOL I am getting smarter though, at least I have done research before spending money! LOL
Enjoyed the change in pace Tim. Only thought I had was do you need to format the SD card first so as to ensure it can take the update?
As I said in the intro. Very different video this week. I have had a lot of suggestions which was good. How is your flying going this week?
@@JodelFlyer weather has put paid to this week, with luck will pick up next week when we get to Scotland
Just a thought try a sad card with only the new update on seems it’s only selecting the last updates installed on the card
I still haven't been able to test fly but it looks as if it has worked. Thank you
Despite, (or maybe because of) my experiences with computers, I'm no fan of how everything always seems to need an update. The only thing that came to mind is checking the right files are on the right SD card, what with having two being swapped in and out.
"M B" seems to make a valid suggestion about extracting the file from the zip folder. Like most things to do wth computers my advice is "good luck". :-)
I too have a solar panel but I think it is less to do with a busy street and more a case of infertile soil. I enjoyed the spider coming to have a look at it too. I prefer spiders to computers.
Your solar panel alternative made me smile! I will be trying out MB’s suggestion next time I get over to the airfield. If I did credits I would be acknowledging the spider for its cameo performance!
Did you actually extract the zip file? It looked like you copied the zip straight to the SD card on the video. rather than extracting the contained file within the zip to the SD.
Haven't read the instructions but I guess you may have done that over the next set of instructions you popped up?
I noticed this too! I believe that you need to extract the files from the zip file before dragging to the SD card ... good luck!
@@wwdlm02 Yeah +1 from me... I believe the binary data should be extracted first. That .FW file should be in the root folder of the SD card.
Thank you for this. I will have to check it out. Lots of people are agreeing with you. I appreciate your viewing and your support!
@@wwdlm02 Thank you. I will try it out next time I get the chance to go over to the airfield.
@@JodelFlyer Good luck Tim👍
reading those instructions, you need to unzip the zip file, (double click on it) and inside you will find the .fw firmware file. The zip file is just there to transport across the internet. It didnt find the fw on startup as you still have it hiding in the zip file.
Thank you for watching and leaving me the answer. I will try again next time I go over to the airfield.
As a couple of others have commented, the minute you copied the .zip to the SD, I thought why would you do that - it won't work. Haven't read the instructions but I would guess you need to expand/extract the .zip and copy its files to the SD. Maybe it's one word in the instructions thats been skipped or not there. But a .zip file on the SD is unlikely to work whatever the equipment is. You could also compare the two SD cards in file explorer, I'd expect them to look similar for things to work, but I'd image one has just a .zip on it, the other lots of files and folders. If so then there is the problem. Hope that ramble helps.
Thank you Mike. I will check it all out next time I go over to the airfield.
I’m a bit of a technophobe myself… I feel your pain!
Thanks for watching Mark. There have been lots of people telling me to unlock the zip folder which sounds good. I am glad you got your Jodel back into the air and will watch your video when I have finished responding to the comments on mine.
In the video, what you did was to put the new card in then hit "save settings to SD card". (This will probably have overwritten the new data on the card with the old from the device.) What you should have done was hit "recall settings from SD card". It's the word 'recall' that is confusing. But I'm sure you need to go FROM the SD card, not TO it.
Thank you very much Dion.
I see Boris the Spider made an appearance today. Who?
Yes, Boris made an impressive cameo performance.
