  • If we want to become an interplanetary species, it’s about time that life on Earth became more like life on Mars. Life on simulated Mars, as six of scientists and engineers experienced it for a year. During that year, a sort of new culture arose. Bringing some of that Martian survival-based ethos back to Earth might allow us to stop the clock on the current global trend: terraforming Earth into Venus.
Dr. Sheyna Gifford is a rehabilitation physician, aerospace researcher, journalist, STEM advocate, and NASA simulated astronaut. She was the health and safety officer and crew journalist for the longest US space simulation to date: 366 contiguous days in a Mars analog on Mauna Kea.
