Deborah Warner’s staging of Richard II with Fiona Shaw as the king stirred up a significant critical controversy when it was presented in 1995 at the National Theatre, and then later in Salzburg and Paris. Among those who recognised its originality and strengths was the critic Paul Taylor who praised the ‘gripping, lucidly felt production’ and Fiona Shaw’s ‘dazzlingly disconcerting… deliberately uncomfortable, compelling performance.’

This is amazing, she's amazing as are all humans who broaden their limitations.

I was lucky enough to see this fantastic production directed by Deborah Warner at the Cottlesloe. Fiona Shaw was spellbinding as Richard. A phenomenal actress and a brilliant performance that has always stayed with me. David Threlfall was a brilliant Bolingbroke too.

Fiona Shaw is a serious, studious , professorial presence. Her dunnish intelligence always shines through in any interview . This earnestness is a major asset at times viz she is a tragedian of the first rank yet also limits her I feel , especially in lighter , more comedic roles where there is a veneer of slight disdain with an undercurrent of barely submerged hysteria , as if this stuff isn't consequential enough, that I find jars the roles in an awkward stasis. So there I 've said it ! bid me , my confessor ,three decades of the rosary for such blasphemy !!
btw Should the play be re titled Richardina the First or as some wags doth parry the familiar Dick ergo "Dick-less 11" - I recall , briefly overhearing the phlegmatic response of the bard himself in ole Silver street tavern when told of the hubbub about a female playing tricky dicky - "Tis much ado about nothing" - Good title I ruminated inanely
btw x2 There is a cello that briefly intrudes in the study in the background - cephalic symbolism doubtless by the artful Shaw!

This THIS is how you make a gender flip character make sense. Not only acknowledging that there are some things, like MacBeth, which are more specific to a male characters relationships, and some things, where a female could bring something different to the role. This is good. I hope this doesn’t become tainted.

While I always find this play and this character affecting, Fiona Shaw was my first exposure to a performance, and remains my favourite.
