When I saw it on the original cinema release it had the ending where Jim dies in the hospital but the added the 'happy' ending for the US release. Same thing happened with The Descent.
If you enjoy the 'where is everyone?' initial premise, and can handle a bit of cheese, the 1981 TV adaptation of The Day of the Triffids fits perfectly. The beginning to 28 Days is a close homage to Triffids'. I always considered this a zombie movie; they might not be dead but might as well be, or maybe they are once they go rabid? For famous on-screen dicks, I don't know if anything matches Viggo Mortensen's crazy shower fight scene in Eastern Promises.
Rick Grimes waking up in the hospital is exactly like Jim waking up in the hospital. kirkman definitely borrowed from this masterpiece of horror cinema.

Honestly originally zombies were voodoo magic type shit so technically nothing is a zombie movie if it doesn’t involve voodoo, not how I feel personally but it’s one of those things. Calling it a zombie movie just works, helps describe what it is.
The government in this movie could have solved the entire outbreak by injecting people with disinfectant. 28 Days Later was a fun movie back in the day but seems extra creepy today. Nice haircut! Who does cut the hairstylist's hair?
The scariest and saddest time was shopping for essential supplies at the start of the pandemic. Crowded stores with people grabbing everything off shelves. This movie was great.
I love this movie and the characters. You are right about neighbors turning on neighbors . Those soldiers are willing to rape a young girl and Selena because they want normalcy. I thought the score to this was great and you’re right I need a shield and gloves. Selena was a bad ass.

Have always been a sucker apocalypse/ zombie flick and I enjoyed the originality of it all. Setting, production etc. The atmosphere & tone was like a terrible dream. Wished the 2nd one was less Hollywood. Mark Wahlberg? Just kidding
