For absent Friends it is Phil on lead vocals :) We were already getting a glimpse of what he could do.
Yeah I was so hopped up on cold medicine last night I didn't even notice. My apologies! I remember yall telling Me about it. Last night Lee, did not. Lol
and @L33Reacts....
I've never understand people always saying that Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins had same voice. It is so noticible to me. May be I am the one who miss the point but really I don't think so.
@arielquarante they are quite distinct but blend extremely well together. The same with Anderson and Squire. You can tell them apart but blended they almost sound like double tracked vocals. I think it’s the reason they could continue to do a lot of older songs after Peter left. Phil could carry on well, even though it was different.
Agreed. But people, that's the point, usually don't notice the double tracked. And even not when obviously just as here Phil is singing alone.
Of course, because he did a lot of double tracked vocals, one can often mismatch who it is. However, when it comes to be a lead voice, there is (to me) no doubt. Or at least after few lines.
@@davidbarker77
@@arielquarante I can tell immediately whenever Phil or Peter are singing. Their voices are quite distinct to anyone who's a long time listener of Genesis and Phil and Peter's solo stuff. But, I guess for new fans, it is harder to tell.
That ending is one of the greatest grooves in the entirety of rock music.
That part hit extra hard. From Tony's solo on, was pure zen! 🔥
Phil never gets the credit he deserves for being a really good drummer.
I agree he is absolutely fantastic
You really need to hear the first Genesis Live album for these songs you've now heard. The live versions are amazing!
there is also an astonishing video remastered in 4k (incredible quality) recorded in the Bataclan (France) from the fox trot tour ! I wish all old videos from genesis or others could get such quality !
Yes, the Genesis Live version of this song is THE version as far as I’m concerned.
Return of the giant hogweed, One of my favourite Genesis songs about a gentle romp in the English countryside with well heeled and well travelled gentlemen and their imported flesh eating plants that can walk and inject poison❤❤❤❤❤ this and 'watcher of the skies' as good as any Prog. Both even better live......
I am so glad we don't have giant hogweed in my state. I think in new York they have it. Someone found it by swamp, I heard. And they brought it home... and they struck by night... 🤣
@L33Reacts There is a giant hogweed plant in the UK. It is seen as an invasive pest. Although nothing like this in the song, which is more 'day of the Triffid'. Ours has poisonous leaves, and the sap which can burn and even leave scars, a bit like your poison ivy.
Basically a true story! You can still see these at Kew Gardens in London, and they are classified as an invasive species here in the UK. Only Genesis, and specifically Peter, could make such an epic track out of this! Kudos!
I read up about them after I read the lyrics to the song and wow, what a terrifying plant. Do people really go blind??
@@L33Reacts no idea, but I'm not going to find out! Hope you're feeling better?
A couple years ago I looked up Hogweed.....and Genesis nailed it!
Wen instruments mattered
Tony is a genius
Hi Lee, what a lovely reaction. Steve's guitar makes me weep also. He and David Gilmour are the most emotive guitarists in prog. When I was your age and feeling overwhelmed, music was the salve and I turned to it often. Progressive music always elevates my mood, but Genesis takes bliss to another level. It's good to see you "shedding ever-changing colours" (your emotions) as you let music guide you through difficult times. Chin up, buddy. You're doing right and things will work out for you and your girls. Cheers!
Child stress over… sat in supermarket car park in the freezing rain with this. My me time 😂😂
I had to take a break seeing tears in your eyes. You seem, like me, to be extremely affected by music (for me movies too, everything). I weep at beauty and this, however it sounds, is “complete.” Genesis filled a void when I was 15. Floyd did at 16, and Yes did at 17/18. Crimson much later. Because Genesis were the first, I still find all their great music can take me places other bands can’t.❤❤
Hahaha poor Matt :( I feel you bro. Shit is wack sometimes.
I edited and added. My love of Genesis knows no bounds as added above. ❤ I saw you cry and I totally know why. When any emotions are stirred, others creep in. Hold on. Sunshine shine on through ❤
@@L33ReactsWhen life is easier I’ll up my membership tier. We can properly chat one day ❤
Yeah I can be severely affected by music. Especially in mental states such as now for me. So thank you bro I appreciate you. We can chat whenever you want bro, I honestly need it at this point. Life has been rough.
The Live version on Genesis Live is Fantastic as all of the songs are in Genesis Classic era and their are 5 great players in Genesis !! 🎶
I know you're gonna love this one. It's crazy.
I absolutely did! It was wonderful. Tony banks absolutely BLEW MY FIN MIND at the end.
Well, not the end persay. But towards the end lol
In fairness to Steve Hackett he still tours with his brilliant band and does all the Genesis classics, this of course among them. He also did a brilliant live version of this with the unbelievable Transatlantic in London, that band of course containing Mike Portnoy, Neal Morse, Roine Stolt, Pete Trewavas and Daniel Gildenlow. You gotta check out the live version on The Return Of the Giant Hogweed it's awesome. Peter has a gorgeous voice in For Absent Friends.
Going to see him in April
Phil Collins on For Absent Friends. They did sound a bit similar at times... T@@steveowens2505
For Absent Friends is Phil on vocals. His Genesis debut!
Yeah that was Phil on absent friends. Lee...have a look at Genesis film shot in Belgium in 1972...you can see them playing this marvelous stuff live. Thanks for a great chanel.
I've seen Giant Hogweed once in the wild. It really is a giant, an enormous umbeliferate (like huge cow parsley or hemlock, over 6ft tall) with a massive stem covered in red hairs. You don't want to go near it! The hairs are poisonous and stinging, the poison reacts with sunlight to cause painful skin blisters. But worse than that, it can cause blindness if a hair gets in your eyes! I only knew about it from this song, so thanks Genesis, not just for a great piece of music but a useful public health warning 😊.
You can hear Peter saying "Heracleum mantegazzianum" in the song, which is the Latin scientific name for the Giant Hogweed.. The plant is native to Russia, but was brought to England in 1817 as an ornamental and became naturaliized an spread in the wild.. It also spread throughout Europe and North America.
Please also one day find time for the more pastoral songs here like For Absent Friends (Phil on lead vocals) and Harlequin. Both will make you nostalgic for the past and lost childhoods, and for me, both tug my heartstrings and lead to weeping. In a nice way ❤😊 Meanwhile, Harold the Barrel is a pure Genesis riot of humor and wordplay 😅
you'll be happy when you watch the video. :D
@@L33Reacts Oooh! All 3 kids sick at home with eternal cough. This will he a pleasant distraction ❤️
@mattleppard1964 dude same here.. poor Danica is still sick. I am too but I definitely feel better then I did. It's manageable now. I only get sick once a year but it's always terrible haha
@@L33Reacts It never really stops for us. And the schools are just Petri dishes. I took an unpaid day off - nice if it wasn’t for those pesky kids! And the loss of pay 😭
I love the humor in Hogweed! It brings to mind an old black and white monster movie - but instead of Godzilla or King Kong, it's a giant plant coming to wipe out humanity 😂 Take care of that cold, sir!
I'm trying, it's hard to get rid of for some reason lol thank you haley 🙏🙏
the tapping is great in it
Yeah Steve was killing it. This is a definite proto metal. I love it
Lee: Praying for you, so thankful this illness didn't take you out (especially since it put you in the hospital). Please don't feel bad about letting your emotions show, we're all on this rocky road together and at some point it will smooth out. Love you.
Liked and subscribed. So fulfilling to watch a young man sit there and have his mind f-ing blown by an under rated in my mind Super Group that many people have foo foo'd and doubted over many years. I have been listening and loving this band for 50 years and I hope you will pass on your appreciation through your children and so on. This music is timeless and could live on forever because it is impossible to get tired of. Get well my man !
For Absent Friends penned by the newcomers Steve and Phil and exquisitely sung by Phil. What mood and atmosphere this song exudes. It is so Nursery Cryme-ish! This album came out in 1971, a splendid year for "art or avant-garde rock." PLEASE check out 1971 Pawn Hearts by Van Der Graaf Generator specifically "Man Erg." You will not be disappointed!
Peter's voice here is very punk/new wave long before that form hit.
I've also heard some serious music scholars say that Back in NYC is proto-punk.
Big hugs to the man who appreciates the album, the band, and the emotions that Genesis brings to your table. I'm getting emotional with your emotions my good man but all in a good way.
Sorry my brother I'm just really going through a lot right now. And I just couldn't hold it back at that moment... beautiful music. I love them.
Absolutely no need to be sorry, and hope you get over your troubles.
Get well soon, Lee! Enjoyed this reaction.
David, thank you so much man. It means a lot.
You know, you’re right about the ‘Steve being good at guitars’ thing.
Steve Hackett
Steve Howe of Yes
Steve Rothery from Marillion
Steven Wilson
Steve Clark from Def Leppard wrote a lot of their iconic riffs..
And definitely can’t forget Steve Vai or Steve Morse.
Most folk seem to miss Mikes bassing. So, so underrated
Like others have said, that’s Phil singing on the first song. I think we associated Phil’s voice with Peter’s since Phil sang background vocals to Peter often. When Phil took over it was an easy transition.
Steve is amazing.
omg ...you're crying. I can't believe it. So great to see. thx
It should be noted that in some of the instrumental sections, Peter might have been assisting on bass drum. Pete did random percussion as well as the winds and horns.
You should go see the Band Musical box. They recreate 70s Genesis tours. They are currently doing the Selling England by the Pound tour. They even lease the original stage shows grom Genesis. Have the costumes, and are great musicians. See if they are coming to your area! They are not a cover band, they are much more. Seeing them is like time traveling to a 1973 Genesis show.
Glad you discovered them and enjoying their contribution so much.
I love that during the piano ostinato Hackett is actually doing very standard blues bar bends, but making them sound so different from any other player.
Me as I believe that you know I’m a major Jethro Tull freak, am so proud of you to react to such a fantastic prog band as I love the Peter Gabriel albums-only in my opinion is the Trick of the Tail is one the best- the whole album is worth listening to.Anyway keep up the great work and I will keep checking your channel!
Phil, first singer. Peter second singer. Genesis is my Favorite!!!! Then YES. Once you learn between the two voices, you know the difference.
..hey man - sending blessings of well-being to ya... and with Genesis, as far as I'm concerned, nothing can go really wrong, especially in the first few years - pure magic 💖
Many thanks my friend. I honestly need them right now. You are so right. Genesis makes me feel complete.
Phil crushing the drums. Magnificent.
Love the reaction man. Hope you're feeling better soon. Genesis , crikes they're awesome 👍
Hope Your Voice gets better soon.
Love Nursery Cryme.
Love Genesis.

Once again... I can't recommend enough watching them play live with Peter at the vocals. You can find videos of GENESIS live from this era... and they're stunning to see. "THE MUSICAL BOX" performed live on the Midnight Special is probably the best... but "RETURN OF THE GIANT HOGWEED" can be found, as well.. Great stuff... and excellent reactions, as usual. Hackett is brilliant.
I hope you're doing better... and remember... one day at a time. ...and time heals. Hang in there and all the best to you!
Hey John I appreciate that brother... I'm trying my best to hang in there. It just feels like one thing after another and I'm just struggling to even exist. But I know that this too shall pass and I will be ok eventually. I have all of you wonderful people behind me and all this beautiful music to uplift me... I'll be ok soon enough 🙂
I will definitely be doing genesis live after we finish up with nursery cryme as a wrap up to it
These guys have a huge catalog and it's all amazing. I hope you make it through as much as possible I think the secret to their greatness has alot to do with Tony Banks as main composer and arranger. @@L33Reacts
talking about it helps, don't be set aback thinking what your audience might be saying back to you, you are the creator and this platform is a good therapy. one day at a time young person, keep going.
Ah, the summer of 1994, listening to this CD transferred to tape for driving. I was listening to Nursery Cryme when my peers were discovering the album Blues for Allah.
Great reaction.
HERE FOR THISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!! And as an avid gardener, I particularly love this song
Hahaha I see why. Those things are scary tbh
'For Absent Friends' ... very early tentative steps by Steve Hackett and Phil Collins to write a song for Genesis. How dare they try to get on the song-writing carousel for Genesis LOL. A beautiful little English ditty.
'The Return of the Giant Hogweed' ... for me the heaviest Genesis ever became. The instrumental climax in the final minute is just insanely good.
Peter expanded on the idea of the Cult Classic Sci-Fi movie "The Day of the Triffids" from 1963" he saw as a kid !!! It's a great movie and Free On Demand, Check it out so much of The Hogweed is in this film !! 👍📺🎶
Yessir! Based on a true story.
Forgot to comment on Musical Box but its clear the inspiration this album had on metal music. Iron Maiden loved these guys. Also, Family's vocalist Roger Chapman has a near identical voice to Peter Gabriel and was a fan of their 60's albums where Chapman has a distinct heavy, raspy belting voice thats aggressive. I think he channeled that energy here.
I didn’t know that about Maiden. Thanks!
I wish Genesis would have done another album like Nursery Crime
Yeah you can hear the proto metal in it! Steve was killing it. And Phil was doing some definitely proto metal drumming. I can see where maiden gets it. I love it 😊
So after 50 years I get to know that Chapman sounds similar to Gabriel. You never stop learning.
@@maraboo72Is that sarcasm? Might seem obvious to you but Lee is new to this style of music. Can I insult you?
One of the best from the best ❤ (And For Absent Friends is a gorgeous one as well!)
Take care and get well my friend! ❤
You rock prog I appreciate you buddy... I'm trying to get better but this virus has been kicking my families ass lol. Hopefully we will be better soon. Genesis helps alot
"Fountain Of Salmacis", you've got to do that one! Awesome tune! "Absent By Friends", is Collins on vocal.
Giant hogweed grows out back of my office. It’s like cow parsley but TREE sized and if you touch it you’re totally fucked. We just let it grow; great burglar deterrent 😄
Shit! I thought poison oak was bad. I don't even have to touch it, it just finds me if it's around.
Hogweed is one my fave early genesis songs. There’s a great live video from them playing it on French tv I think. Phil is on fire
There is a brilliant version of Absent Friends sung by Richard Sinclair (Hatfield/Camel etc). BTW Steve Hackett has toured with this song and told the audience to "tap along" i.e. the guitar tapping years before van Halen!!
HERACLEUM MANTEGAZZIANUM! The beast is real. That Peter Gabriel and Genesis elevated the whole thing to a sci-fi/fantasy epic is exquisite. Fact remains, don't f with the Giant Hogweed. It'll mess you up. Blessings.
Peter similarly has an aggressive tone on the song, "Back in N.Y.C."
This is an INSANE song. Try to catch some of the lyrics. ❤❤
I typed some of the lyrics out as a reply to this and youtube delet3d it 😂😂😂 because of a word. Wow
Heracleum mentegazziani!!! 😊
Phil is so good on this whole album. Genesis is amazingly tight.
There's a great live version of Hogweed from a Belgian tv show here on youtube. Its an amazing version. The ending is even harder than the lp version
It's great. But it's an edited version. 8:14 on album. 5:42 on that video
I like to see how much you enjoy the band. I listen to the band like for the past 40 years when à friend made me discover them. A tip, although I do not know where you live, go to Hackett's gigs. They are increible ! Hé just did the Foxtrot tour and Seconds Out, and next year the Lamb (though not complete). It is worth it. And if you plan to go to à gig close to you, let me know. Hey, you're not alone, tough days will go away and as you said before, listen to only quality positive innovative music..it works!
Re: Tony's piano reminding you of Yanni -- a lot of "new age" musicians like Enya and David Arkenstone grew up listening to 70's prog bands for sure. I don't know about Yanni specifically, but he was probably also influenced -- like Tony -- by the romantic era classical masters like Rachmaninoff.
I honestly grew up with new age and Christian music... so I'm very familiar with Enya and yanni. I love them both lol. I can see the influences for sure.
Of course, the Hogweed intro: Steve invents fret tapping!
the RUSH songs "Armor and Sword" and "Test For Echo" and "Red Lenses" are great RUSH songs to react to!
I imagine you'll get to it. But if you like Nursery Cryme I'm confident you'll like Foxtrot too. I had these on each side of a cassette; they almost feel like a unit to me.
Steve has a new live album out celebrating the 50th anniversary release of Foxtrot including a number of his solo offerings and it's stellar!
Really?? Hmm... I haven't even really touched foxtrot other then suppers ready i think. Maybe I should tackle that next :)
Holy Shit!! Foxtrot, as you might expect, is well worth the venture.@@L33Reacts
Hogweed was a botanical threat. a invasive species. Peter plays it as a War of the worlds type threat. Phil gets a real workout in this one. Hey, hang on in there, tough times can be ridden out. be patient and follow your heart. but use your brain. Piano gets me too. Banks is doing classical music at the present ! just wrote a symphonic work called, Ebb and Flow..
Still a threat. You can get blisters and even go blind if you get it in your eyes
Listen as Steve Hackett invents guitar tapping.
That shit blew my mind LOL he really did invent it here 🤣
acoustic I believe is all Rutherford on this album. Basic tracks were already recorded when Hackett joined and he just added electric parts late in the recording process.
Ahhhh ok that's cool. He killed it. Then Hackett came and just elevated it as well!
@@L33Reacts Mmmm....Not sure here on "already recorded".... Some of the tracks were already composed, that's for sure, but recorded? I don't think so... Steve joined in December 70 and Nursery Cryme was recorded in August 71! And also, For Absent Friends is a Hackett composition, it would be odd Mike playing the guitar on a Hackett composition.... So, I would say acoustics are as usual a mix of Mike and Steve's 12-strings, and Steve augmented the compositions with both electric and acoustic guitar playing.
It’s not Peter on Absent Friends.
Yeah I didn't realize till I woke up this morning lol I was on cold and anxiety meds last night, so I didn't peep that. My apologies. Phil was just showing us a glimpse of the future:)
Nos emocionamos juntos❤
enjoying your plunge into my past. right into my wheelhouse. i consider genesis (until peter left), yes, and pink floyd to be "the big three". i put frank in a category of his own. impressed by how quickly you've gotten into frank. it's hard for a lot of people. many never "get it". i mean "frank fridays"? you just did that because you like it. he's the pinnacle for me. the final, and entirely different, piece of my puzzle it the grateful dead. we'll get to that ;)
Sorry for your cold. I just got over mine (3 weeks, ugh). Nice Genesis choices.
OK, it IS hard to tell the difference often, but this is Phil on 'Absent Friends'. You get a pass. 'Hogweed' is undoubtedly Peter. Note the botanical name included at the end of this tongue-in-cheek tune. Nothing like concern for invasive species back in 1971! "immune to all our herbicidal battering" is such a fine line. Love how Genesis uses all their instruments to blend a rockin' masterpiece. "Kill them with your Hogweed hairs! Heracleum Mantegazziani"
Phil Collins was 17 when he sang this. (For Absent Friends)
He was 20 but still young when you consider the drumming on this album 👍
やはりこの頃の、ピーターとフィルの声質は凄く似てますね
"Hogweed" has one of the best outros in the history of music and live it was even more powerful. They don't make 'em like these guys anymore.
I can't wait to hear it live! Everyone has been hyping it up lol. These guys are exceptional in every sense of the word. I feel blessed to have found them :)
@@L33Reacts Yes and Genesis are my two favorite bands on the planet and I'm glad I discovered them young. It is music that will stick with you for the rest of your life and help you through the dark times. I know it has for me! You were mentioning Yanni. I believe one of his biggest influences was Vangelis, another Greek keyboard maestro I suggest checking out. He did four albums with Jon Anderson of Yes and many groundbreaking electronic, and symphonic electronic albums from the 70s through to 2021.
Dude you should really do Quadrant 4 (Billy Cobham Spectrum Album). Maybe you've heard it. Insane double bass shuffle everyone on it is ridiculous. Electric Lady Studios early 70's one take.
