The song’s central image of diving into a pool uses water as an all-surrounding metaphor for the love she feels in her current relationship (she’s been with Chad Gilbert since 2008). However, there is a dark side to love as it threatens to drown her and she is overwhelmed by the uncertainties in the relationship, both present and future
Disagreed. I think the pool symbolizes throwing yourself back into an unhealthy relationship. It's not about uncertainties, it's that she knows it's bad for her but keeps diving in because it's a pain she's familiar with, and then running out of air and instead of resurfacing, just sits underwater drowning. Also yeah, they divorced. lmao
I had a vivid image for a music video for this song in my head when I first heard it. Okay: Hailey is on a fishing boat, and falls into the water, and is saved by a fishman, like a Shape of Water type thing. And then she keeps going out during increasingly dangerous weather so she can be thrown in and saved by him again and again. Every time she is underwater with him, it seems like a romantic scene with pink light and they seem like they're dancing underwater together until she wakes up on the shore again, and goes back out the next day. And then at the end, she goes out in a full on hurricane, and is thrown overboard, and the fishman swims up to her again, and they are swimming in that same, seemingly romantic, dance, but then this time, as the final riff plays, it fades out and she is dead, wrapped in seaweed, and the fishman is eating her leg. It's dark, but it works with the theme of being dangerously addicted to a relationship that seems healthy, but is actually killing you.
As if the first cut wasn't deep enough I dove in again 'cause I'm not into giving up Could've gotten the same rush from any lover's touch Why get used to something new? 'Cause no one breaks my heart like you When you kiss me, I wish we could see what happens next For a moment, I can forget what happens in my head If I doubt you, would you come through? Happy second chance or happy ending But this time you don't leave me sinking I'm underwater No air in my lungs My eyes are open I'm done giving up You are the wave I could never tame If I survive I'll dive back in As if the first blood didn't thrill enough I went further out to see what else was left of us Never found the deep end of our little ocean Drain the fantasy of you Headfirst into shallow pools And I wonder, is it better to get it over with? The illusion, can shatter before we begin If you're really sorry Happy second chance, I think I could forgive This time you won't leave me sinking I'm underwater No air in my lungs My eyes are open I'm done giving up You are the wave I could never tame If I survive I'll dive back in Dive back into Right back into Dive right back into you Now I know you Now I know you Now that I know you Dive right back into you Dive back into Right back into you Dive right back into you Now I know you Now I know you Now that I know you Dive right back into you I'm underwater No air in my lungs My eyes are open I'm done giving up You are the wave I could never tame If I survive I'll dive back in I'm underwater No air in my lungs My eyes are open I'm done giving up You are the wave I could never tame If I survive I'll dive back in I'll dive back in I'll dive back
Luckyman187 I think you're missing the whole point of the song. It's about cutting. "Could've got the same rush, from any lover's touch." She's making out the relationship of self-harm to be romantic, and if she isn't happy with her actual romance then she'll dive back into cutting.
Vibra it's definitely NOT about cutting -she mentions "cuts" and "blood" by its all metaphorical, about being hurt by her lover now. Hayley's then husband was rumored to be a cheater before and during they were together
The song literally talks about how she's not sure know how to move forward and how dangerous it seems. No where is she saying it's ok, just that she'll take the risk.
