Johnny Flynn reminds me of Donovan. He was writing and singing deep, beautiful songs by that age too.

@Bert van Staveren Absolutly agree! And the jazzy arrangement gives the song a special, mystisk mood.I think it's Danny Thompson (Pentangle) on the double bass.

When your music is as unique as Donovan's the press is too lazy to define you. Admirers of his music know how brilliantly he shines.

A truly beautiful song from one of Britain's, indeed the world's, greatest songwriters. I love the studio, orchestrated version of this hugely, but to watch Donovan's marvellous and knowledgeable guitar playing coupled with that superb voice makes one appreciate true talent, a real songwriter. Another superb song of his is Get Thy Bearings...what an arrangement on an awesome composition.

The world has always been Jihads, Crusades, "violent hash smokers" and people pissing in the street. And also always dollhouse rooms with colored lights swinging. Gotta look for them. Which arguably is what this song is about. : )

Donovan Leitch fae Maryhill. Gaun yersel Donovan. Was about 3 or 4 when I remember playing your single over and over again, Sunshine Superman that belonged to my dad on his dansette in the 60s. Remember it vividly, as the sun shone in through the window of the miners row in Winchburgh. Been a fan of yours ever since. God bless you.

Goodge Street was onne of those stations, there the Northern Line, where the underground (train) came crashing, rumbling into the station on a curve and across points (track changing devices) causing a great shower of electric flashes!

Which world is "real" --- Goodge Street, or Wall Street? Don't think too long. The last train for the firefly platform is leaving and you don't want to be late. One of two songs that brings back the Haight-Ashbury in 1967, the other being "Embryonic Journey."

@shinjukugewalt i think this song was much more than a prelude to Nick Drake. He was redefining what popular music could be, this was years ahead of its time. He is in the same category as John Lennon or Dylan that way. And a lot more fun to listen to than Nick Drake! Not to mention someone who actually touched millions.

Was he bobbing for apples? I don't think so. But he was involved in an eating scene. Trying to get a Snickers bar out of a robot vendor. But if u have the luck of Costanza the bar will get stuck and you shake with rage ......until someone plays Charlie Mingus who is mellow and fantastic.....etc etc.
      Love this song!!! It's folkjazz!!

On the firefly platform on sunny Goodge Street
Violent hash-smoker shook a chocolate machine
    Involved in an eating scene
Smashing into neon streets in their stillness
Smearing their eyes on the crazy-colored goddess
Listenin' to sounds of Mingus Mellow Fantastic
    "My, my, " they sigh
    "My, my, " they sigh
In doll house rooms with colored lights swingin'
    Strange music boxes sadly tinklin'
Drinkin' the sun, shining all around you
    "My, my, " they sigh
    "My, my, " they sigh
    "My, my, " they sigh
    "My, my, " they sigh
The magician, he sparkles in satin and velvet
You gaze at his splendour with eyes you've not used yet
I tell you his name is Love, Love, Love
    "My, my, " they sigh
    "My, my, " they sigh
    "My, my, " they sigh
