Donovan's tender, caring, tone of voice and his respectful, loving words were such a revelation for us hippie women when he first came on music scene. Not even a hint of machismo! His example inspired other men to express their sweetness and sensitivity, and inspired women to receive egalitarian love.
Thank you so much for this, @Alicia Bay Laurel. He’s still one of my musical and cultural heroes, but I’d almost forgotten how important this aspect of Donovan was for me as a teenage flower child trying to find my path in the bewildering world of relationships.😵💫
People like Donovan defined the spirit of that period in our history. The ideas and beliefs of the time affected many of us and I don't understand why it didn't endure.
This comment section is just about the most sincere comment section I've ever seen. It makes me feel a nostalgia for s time I wasn't even born for. I wish u could've experienced those great years of the 60s and 70s. Sadly I'm only 17 and good music like this isn't made anymore but I will always appreciate these songs.
Interesting comment for one so young. I was 17 in 1968. It was a magical decade. I believe it has a resonance (vibration) with events in 1863 100 before.
He is still wonderful! Unlike so many of his generation and status, he never sold out. Still an eco-troubadour poet. Go seek him out at Faerieworlds & Faeriecon, at PORTL or here on RUclips.
This song is my wife Mary Jane and mine, i learned the song in 1971 to impress her with what i thought would be impossible to have, "HER" MY MARY JANE, GOING ON 54 years, i definately thought " AH BUT I MIGHT AS WELL TRY AND CATCH THE WIND" Now i know just how luck i had been to not only catch her, but be with her 54 and counting! So if you think its imposible, just remember she was thinking catching me would be imposible, Thank you with great respect to you and ours "DONOVEN!
Donovan had an other worldly quality to him. Have loved his music from day one. I was born in the fifties and am so glad I was because we had some great artists in the sixties. Thank heavens for You Tube
Beautiful Donovan. I loved this song from the moment I first heard it as a girl and times were so innocent; the world was so different then. I remember hearing this song on a pop station and became a fan from that moment on. This song so lovely, full of woe and tenderness. Donovan has always been my favourite male folk singer. So wonderful to see him in concert many times over the years, last time was in Monterey, California.
An amazing clip of an extremely under-rated and under-appreciated artist. Though I was born in 1957, I have an older sister who shared her music with me. I grew up in the '60's and '70's. The music of the '60's was incredible. Thank you, sis, for opening up your world to me!
Gayla Smith you are absolutely right Gayla. I grew up in US and Europe in 60s and 70s and not only was the music was incredibly great, it was also a big part of our lives. It shaped it. It United us. Much like social media does with young people today.
it brings me a great sadness knowing that my favorite voices are fading into obscurity, never for me to meet beyond a speaker... many old and dying, or dead.. all I want is a time machine
Totally genius , very under-valued top musician, hard to imagine recorded over 40 years ago , basically sung raw , without shed loads of sound equipment , respect to the man . wish I had 1 % of his genius , :-)
@@rsands9 I thought the same thing. IIRC it was around the time that cd's were making the scene that albums (or cds) were $7. $4 was even kind of high in '64.
As an old man, I appreciate each era I have lived, but, there is but one place in time that I was truly alive. In my mind I visit there often. It's the only way I can try and catch the wind.
The most beautiful and touching song He's a great singer love all his songs And his got a beautiful voice I got tears in my eyes lol What do you admire most about this man?😊
perfect. It was another time, folks. A gentler, more thoughtful, more socially connected time (in real ways, not media-generated ways) Lots of women loved this young man and he loved a few back.
I was in a shop today and this song was playing. I was listening and knew it to be a song from when I was much younger and then I remembered the artist's name! I asked the lady behind the counter if this was Donovan singing, and she had to look at the playlist to confirm. I can hardly remember yesterday but I remembered this song and Donovan and I doubt I have heard either for a very long time. I'm in my late 60's now and this bought back so many nostalgic memories, and I had to come home and listen to more of Donovan
He is wonderful...I saw him in Edmonton in the late 70's wearing that very same shirt and his guitar with the stars on it. He had named his guitar....but I can't remember what he called it.
The people of his generation were lucky to have seen and heard him sing. The music of today doesn't have the substance as the music of yester years. I envy my parents.
Yours is the best comment on in this thread. No trying to dress it up with something, just recognizing it is another version of his popular song that had so much radio play in those days. As much as I liked the original version, hearing this one is a real treat. Like you said, beautiful.
This song mesmerizes me....it is such a pure rendition.....God bless us all....I dedicate this to my Ukrainian lady who blesses me with complete love every day...God bless you Elya! Love, Bobby Let us try to catch wind......
Jo-Ann Isom: We used to have a blast ,"Trying to catch the wind!!" Donovans music will always be so tender and sweet but as soon as you hear it you are transported straight back to how far out it used to be!!!! We were SO lucky to be able to dig those days!!!! SO RIGHTEOUS....
Britains Donovan inducted to Rock Hall of Fame in 2012 (finally !) CLEVELAND Donovan, a folksy British singer-songwriter once labeled "the new Dylan," has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Overlooked by voters in previous years, Donovan has finally been saluted for his accomplishments as a gifted lyricist and musician. Born Donovan Leitch, he blended poetry into folk songs and scored a string of hits in the 1960s with "Sunshine Superman," "Mellow Yellow" and "Hurdy Gurdy Man."
To add to Jo Bodley's comment-- Memories of good times long ago are what makes an aged hippy happy. Preserve your memories, there all that's left you. P.Simon.
This man was a major part of the Sixties. He may not be remembered much but Donovan was there before the Beatles, then he accompanied the Beatles to Rishikesh, the sanctuary of The Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.
When rain has hung the leaves with tears I want you near To kill my fears, To help me to leave all my blues behind. For standing in your heart Is where I wanna be And I long to be, Ah but I may as well try and catch the wind...
So blessed to be from the generation that cared and loves this still

Yes, exactly!❤
It was indeed a privilege to have been part of that generation. I am very grateful for having been a part of it.
You still are a part of it. I'm alive and kicking.
Totally agree, it was the best and we were so lucky

This is the song I listened to when my first love left this life way too soon...for you Evie...
That's how I remember him. Sitting cross-legged on the floor and holding the audience in the palm of his hand. Wasn't he wonderful?
Yes.

one of the most beautiful pieces of music ive ever experienced...love Donovan

I don't believe the world was more innocent in that time. Every age has its terrible struggles.
One of the best songs ever written.
No matter what mood I’m in this song always gives me a happy feeling!
He had such a beautiful voice...one of the greats back when music was music. 🎵🎶
This iconic video captures the creative genius and spirit of the 60’s and 70’s.

extremely underrated..I love Donovan, did growing up in the 60s, and never understood why many people didn't get him..

certainly one of the most underrated of his generation. bob dylan was a fan.
Tim Moore. As were the Fab 4.
Underrated? He was an international superstar for at least a decade. He sold out every concert he held! Sold millions of records.

wow
English Dylan
@@meanlotti9452 no! Dylan was the American Donovan
@@meanlotti9452 He is Scottish.
I remember saving up my baby sitting money to buy this album back in 1964, it cost seven dollars, but worth every penny
Kathleen Anne Winston wow! That was a lot for then. Many albums were $3.29 but if you wanted stereo $3.99 or so. Even that was a small fortune! :-)
@@rsands9 Yeah....seven bucks seems high, even for '74. But hey, my memory ain't wait it used to be....
@@rsands9 I just wanted the left channel, but they made me pay for both.
Try to pick up a new vinyl of Donovan or any classic artist nowadays ….. 50 to 100 dollars minimum.
@@rsands9 I thought the same thing. IIRC it was around the time that cd's were making the scene that albums (or cds) were $7. $4 was even kind of high in '64.
Captures the feel of the times like no other, I think. The joy - and pain - of being young in the 60s.
A great singer and songwriter who has never been given the credit he deserves. Thank you Donovan.
I so love this slower version, so mellow and wonderful ! Pleased I met Donovan in 2007.
He is a treasure to the music world. I loved every song he sang.
As special as the day he performed it. The world was a different place, I was in it then and still around here now. ✌️
❤gorgeous beautifull version of a wonderfull song ,close my eyes and drift into pure serenity ,peace ,😊
Better than the recorded version. And the recorded version was great!
As an old man, I appreciate each era I have lived, but, there is but one place in time that I was truly alive. In my mind I visit there often. It's the only way I can try and catch the wind.
I think this is Donovan's masterpiece. I first heard it at age 14 and thought if ever I could play even/only 1 song, it would be this.
I have known this song for many years .some how listening to it late at night in a world shattered by covid it means so much more to me.
I always loved Donovan’s songs. I used to work out the guitar chords and sing them in my room! They made me feel good. 💕
The most beautiful and touching song
He's a great singer love all his songs
And his got a beautiful voice
I got tears in my eyes lol

I was really in love with Donovan, when I was 17. I lived in the Netherlands....
Amazingly outstanding! So enjoyable! Thank you Donovan God bless you and everyone
Such a bittersweet song. Unrequited love, yearning for what you can't have.

Yes, I forgot just how sweet his voice is/was.
Jo Bodley I agree, I love this guy! Born in SF in 56', and in secret considered myself a flower child LOL

A great age for great music 1963 - 1995.
What a beautiful generation. Wish I grew up in that era. I'm jealous!
one of the greatest of the singer-songwriters to come out of the sixties.

Wonderful song, just rediscovered it. Hear the vibrato in his voice- how does he do that? Can anybody on the radio today do that?
Donovan, should of got a lot more exposure than he did, with songs like this, a true master..

Not remembered? You must be joking. He's only not remembered by those who are no longer alive.
Simply beautiful
What a beautiful mind...saw in 1967 at the palatium...so mellow on his chair
So just beautiful merci beaucoup Donovan 🎸🎶🤗🤗🤗

Superb. I like his trousers!
What a sweet gentle soul.
Melts my heart.
When rain has hung the leaves with tears
I want you near
To kill my fears,
To help me to leave all my blues behind.
