    Hi, Jane. Thank you! I started watching these videos last night, just finished a minute ago while getting my cardboard ready to shred. Guess what I'm doing today, 😅😅. Thanks again.

      Hi Cheriann! Welcome!! You’re going to love the pre-compost! As many have said that are now making it, it’s a game changer! Do yourself a favor if you haven’t already and get another similar sized tote. It’s SO MUCH easier to turn the compost by loading it into a 2nd tote than trying to turn it within the same tote.
      Please keep us informed on how it goes! ❤️😎🪱

    Hey Jane. Thanks for the informative videos. I started my first batch of bread re compost yesterday. It’s up to 97 with 70 ambient temp after 24 hours. I have about 3 gallons of vegetable slurry leftover.
    Question 1 - when should I mix up again?
    Question 2 / can I freeze my leftover slurry?

    • @larrymartin1627
      @larrymartin1627 Год назад +1

      Pre compost not bread re compost!

      Hi Larry! Welcome! I’m so excited for you starting the pre-compost adventure! Fantastic!
      You’re off to a great start 👍. You should aim to mix it after it reaches its top temperature, whatever that is, and cools down several degrees. There’s no hard and fast rule in exactly when. Just about any timing works. When you mix it up are you going to do a 2nd heat cycle? I really recommend it if you can - it makes a big difference in how quickly the worms process it into castings.

    • @RockinWorms
      @RockinWorms  Год назад

      Sorry forgot…..I keep it in one of the garage fridges but that’s not a space luxury everyone has 😊. Freezing the slurry will be fine. Freezing does not kill off bacteria so it’ll wake up and get to work once it’s out of the cold and into your pre-compost tote 👍.

    Helloooo there, i love your video's and learned a lot. Sorry for my bad english im from holland. I did a bin like yours and the temprature wouldnt go over 120. Last week i was reading a book wich said the "bin" or pile should be 1m by 1m and 1m high so 1 m3 to reach 140 160. Last week i started also a pile in my parents backyard and i have reached 150.
    Pleasr Keep posting video's because i really like your point of view and i am just blown away that the biology behind it just makes no sense. Everthing have to be perfect and how on earth have created these kind of circles and microbes etc etc..
    I really think its not possible for a human to create this nor could think about it because this excisted a long time ago and also before microscopes haha. These kind of things makes me worry because im now thinking god should be the one Who even can design and create this. I dont believe in sciencefiction so no bigbang theorie or monkey could even understand this

      Hello again! The 1 meter cubes is for outdoor ‘regular’ composting. What we’re doing is taking the basic principles and scaling them waaaay down so we can get similar results in a more controlled environment. Also many people don’t have the space or ability to make a traditional compost pile so the table top indoor (suitable for those without land) pre-compost method is accessible to everyone.
      We are also doing pre-compost. We’re not looking to kill weed seeds or specific pathogens. We’re looking to get a jump start on breaking down the main food sources for worms so they can eat and make castings faster for our use. 👍❤️🪱
      Your temperature gain to 120F is excellent for a small system! 👍😎. Higher temperatures, as I noted above, are not necessary.
      As for the rest of your posted comments, let’s stick to worms and leave religion to channels dedicated to that 😊.
      Thanks for watching! 🪱🪱🪱

    Jayne, have you noticed a difference when you pre-compost in the hot months versus the cooler months?
    ~ Sandra

    • @RockinWorms
      @RockinWorms  Год назад +1

      Hi Sandra! The cooler months have been my front room at 77F during the day and 85F at night 🤣. Outside is a LOT hotter all the time. I do think the totes are heating up initially faster but overall temperature rise seems to be pretty much the same. When late fall/winter comes I’ll be better able to see if there’s a difference. Great question! Thanks for watching 🪱❤️❤️

    Another question Jane. If I do a second cycle about how long in total will it take from start to finish? I have 2 new urban worm bags that I’m looking to populate and just wondering when I should think I can order worms.

    • @RockinWorms
      @RockinWorms  Год назад

      It’s hard to say exactly but I’d count on giving it 2 weeks. You can usually start the 2nd cycle around days 5-8 and then by day 14 or so the 2nd heat cycle has started to either drop or plateau. Mine tends to plateau and can stay at nice warm to hot temperatures for weeks! If I need the pre-compost I take it out of the tote and once out it cools down quickly to a safe temperature for use in the worm bin.
      Word of caution on ordering worms. Be very aware of what you’re ordering and what you’re getting. ‘Red worms’ DO NOT mean red wigglers (esenias species) for most of the bigger worm sellers. If you’re ok with mixed species then that’s fine of course. It’s just that too often people aren’t getting what they think they’re buying 😡.

    • @larrymartin1627
      @larrymartin1627 Год назад +1

      Do you have a recommended worm seller. I am looking for ENC and maybe ANC.

    • @RockinWorms
      @RockinWorms  Год назад

      @@larrymartin1627 I bought some red wigglers (100 of them) from Vee at the garden and worm lady website. She sells a variety of worms. You might want to check out what she has on offer. I believe she’s not currently selling due to hot weather concerns.
      If you’re ok with esenia cocoons (the red wiggler species which does include ENCs) I’ve just started offering them 😊. Cocoons ship fine with the hotter temps 👍. However cocoons aren’t what everyone wants of course. I’m probably a few months away from selling worm worms 😎.
      The big worm sellers aren’t always reliable as to what you get. Many sell ‘red worms’ which include blue worms. Sometimes it’s almost all blue worms 😳. I’d guess if they sell ANCs they might actually be ANCs as they’re more identifiable. But…🤷‍♂️ be careful. I happy that there are several smaller sellers (like me) now entering the market that are focused on supplying buyers with the worms they actually think they’re buying 🤗.

    I started a pre compost bin 2 weeks ago. It got to 97 within 24 hrs and then started falling. I have mixed, added liquid(think I got it to wet) added coffee and cardboard. Got it to 91 and then felt dry added liquid and then added coffee. Got to 89. Then noticed moisture in corners and a little sour smell so added cardboard 2 nights ago. It has been 93 the last 2 days. Jeez I am not figuring this out! What am I doing wrong?

    • @RockinWorms
      @RockinWorms  Год назад

      Hi Larry! I’m sorry it’s not going as you expected 🥲. Let’s figure this out 😊. Questions first so I understand the parameters you have. What’s the tote size? What liquid are you using? What’s your rough cardboard to coffee grounds ratio? Anything else in there?
      All that aside for a moment, you are definitely getting biota action unless your ambient temperature is 97 😊. Mesophilic activity is at room temperatures up to 113F. The hotter it is the faster the biota is working and breaking the materials down. What you have is just a slower process happening. Take pride and comfort that you actually do have it working! Just not as fast as you’d like 😎. So you’re really at the tweaking stage. Once I have some of your answers I can better help you with the tweaks! ❤️🪱🪱

      Tote size s 18 gallon. Exact one like you had. I pretty much followed your 7 step process to a tee.

    • @RockinWorms
      @RockinWorms  Год назад +1

      @@larrymartin1627 Ok! First off you’re getting an almost 30 degree heat increase. That is not shabby at all! And you’ve got all the pieces in place. You already talked about the mixture being too wet and then too dry so keep trying to dial that in. I have learned to err on the dry side because it’s easier and happens by accident more (🙄). Also the biota give off moisture anyway as they breathe so I count on that as part of my moisture equation.
      I suggest you up your nitrogen a bit. I now tend to go closer to 50/50. The last thing, if you’re willing to spend a $1 or $2 is to buy some yeast. That’ll give you a big hit of fungi which will zoom your compost process. I’m actually going to add yeast to my totes tonight to speed up their processing. Thanks to you and Amy I realized/remembered that adding yeast will be a big help in making the pre-compost be ready for use in the timeframe I need it to be! Also do remember that composting loves heat - I am much warmer than 69F and that does impact my results.
      Hope this helps! Let me know! ❤️🪱🪱
