- By now every car lover knows who Carroll Shelby was, but what makes his cars so great? To find out, we headed to the Autoclub Speedway in Fontana, California, where the Shelby American Automobile Club was holding its annual Shelby Convention. We talked with racers and collectors, and got a chance to ride in a GT40 with a man who raced for Shelby back in the days, High Performance Driving School founder, Bob Bondurant. We also were on hand for the debut of the newly restored Essex Wire Cobra, one of the winningest big block Cobras ever to compete. We also take a look at what makes driving these cars special, and why people come from all over the world to see them in person, and hear them on the track.

Great episode, LOVED watching Bob drive that big block at the end like a true racer! No paddle shifts here, no siree, just coordination, finesse, smoothness, a stick shift and a serious look on the face to get the job done. Great stuff! could have watched more
Can't get enough of what the Hot Rod Mag staff has to offer. Just gives me a big grin all the time
Those cars were incredibly loud and fast. Those were the age of the true race car drivers. I have been to many museums and shows and anything touched by Shelby will always be my favorite. RIP Shelby :(
Glad you liked the ending! Obviously I'd be sorry to see Dodge end as a brand name, it's a company with a wonderful racing and product history, but it's possible SRT could offer some interesting cars. Will a Challenger by any other name smell as sweet?
Elana
THANK YOU!! so much for that last bit with the 70' Shelby racing. Best sound ever!
Icemanroyal1 - Everyone at the event was having a blast. If you get a chance to attend one of SAAC's events, we totally recommend it. Believe the driver at the very end was actually Steve Glomb.
Elana
Good eye! There was a vintage Trans Am race as well as the Shelby meet. Both a Dart and a Challenger were in attendance, but they will have to wait for a more Dodge-centric video.
Elana
Being in the same location with Elana would make my day. Keep up the great work Elana
Hi Skooli21, Do you mean in the intro scene? Most of those cars were put together by Precision Machines in Lodi, California. They might be able to answer your questions.
Elana
Thanks Dave - I laughed at myself when I watched the footage, no acting there, I was really thrilled. What would you have done with the Shelby if you'd managed to buy it?

That was a great video! I just love the Shelbys. I got to ride in a original polished aluminum body car about 8 years ago and had a smile on my face similar to yours. I remember a 69 for sale for 1500 bucks with a thrown rod and zero rust but my dad would not loan me the extra 400 bucks I was short..... the one that got away.
Keep up the good work!
Mopar guy here but damn I love me some Shelby's (I am a Texan so its a given and I live on what was once a track where Shelby brought his cars to race and to test, his shop was only a few miles away. Green Valley)
Oh you guys are sweet to worry about our safety…don't fret, I had a lap belt. As for Bondurant, well, you wanna tell a man who raced Le Mans to buckle up? - Elana
Even though I prefer European exotics, this is an absolute braingasm. Thank you for presenting this, the history and preservation of history is amazing. Amazing enthusiasts, I absolutely love it.
The cobra going by @ 0:40 sounds completely insane.
I've always wanted a Shelby Cobra since I was a kid. Great Vid!
That's wonderful to hear. Got any suggestions for what you'd like to see next?
Elana
As far as we know, any Shelby is allowed to compete.
Elana
I love Chevy but I can't deny the Ford GT40 as being my favorite dream sports car in the world. Thanks Elana and good job - you had my stomach in knots just looking at and listening to all those Shelbys
Very nice show. I'd like to say thanks Shelby cuz u make this episode
If possible, I'd like to see if Hot Rod Unlimited can get a compilation (or just one story) of old guys/gals with old hot rods that might have a good tale or two behind it. A unique American history of driver(s) and automobile(s).
This was a good one! Thks Elana and team.
I'd be smiling like a fool too if I were in a GT40 as well! I'm jealous...
I sure hope that guy has burn cream around. That one hurt all the way over here. Lovin it!
That guy with the mercury is huuuuuge
That was great. I wish I could give this 100 more thumbs up.
Nothing like the sound of a awesome V8
Got my first taste of Vintage road racing at Watkins Glen with the SAAC convention in 1993. SAAC has always promoted road racing more than the other pony car brands which all seemed more interested in drag racing. Once you go road racing you never go back.
wow the last part of the vid was awesome i really wanna do it in real life! but i think i got some feeling in need for speed shift 2,the sound,movements...
That chrome Daytona at 6:33!!!
that was it?!?! I could watch days of this
if it had a chevy it would say "powered by your tax dollars" LOL
Well I have to agree with you there, rear wheel drive cars are so much easier around a track, but the fact that a GLHS had half the power and less than half the cost and was a Shelby product is why I made my statement in the first place. Like I said, "they were extremely fast FOR WHAT THEY WERE."
I heard there were a couple of GLHSs there also, you should've mention something about the dodges other than on picture of a dakota. You guys did put the GLHS on the cover with a GT350 after all.
I was only 18 years old at the time but had already owned 27 cars. (we had our own auto wrecking yard) I had great plans of pulling out the engine and putting in a 390 from an LTD that I used to bomb around the fields in. It really did not need paint just a wash/ wax and was mint inside. From then on I really liked the mustangs. Later that year I purchased my first licensed street legal car. It was a 68 mustang coup. Was there a dream car? What did you end up getting instead?
The new and old GT-40 is my all-time favorite car. Go USA!
3:47 whoa, right side drive with right side shifter at the door??
So many awesome cars! I love the GT40 and I don't care if it's not the fastest, lol.
I know some people might hate me for this, but my favoret Shelby is the 1968 Shelby GT500.
I would love to be in the passenger seat of the GT 40. It would take a week to wipe the grin off my face. There's just something about those cars that has fascinated me for most of my life.
10:29
Beautiful sound...
I'd rather have a good GT40 replica. The GT40 is probably my #1 dream machine. My favorite Lambo is the Miura. Another favorite car of mine is the De Tomaso Pantera. But honestly I couldn't quite recall what the Gallardo even looked like.
Thanks Elana. I'll look into it.
The shifter on the GT40 was next to the door? I've never seen something set up like that.
6:34, check out the chrome Daytona Coupe in the background. lol, Shiny.
2:30 THOSE ARE THE FRONT TIRES!? HOLY SHIT!
Um I'm going next year this is amazing!
Not you apparently, Mr. Grumpy!!!!
WHY YOU SO MEAN TO ME!!!
Can't a fabulous dude get some love!!!!!
67 gt350 was a luxury dog mustang.65 and 66 stangs were lighter and quicker around a course. Also, there is no way that a glhs could keep up with an early cobra on the track.Yes the cobra's were considered a production car.
Great video Elana,
...I'm sorry I misspelled your name, I guess I was so impressed I remembered it-I didn't bother to check...really liked the video :-)
You the bob is good should ride in that gt-350 with Gary Patternson. Talk abour a good time.
Ever car lover knows!!!
I wish I could've been there.. So many amazing cars. Jealous!!
A lot of uploads today!
boy you must be fun at parties
2:32 Gigantic front tires
An 8ft tall Vietnamese guy wearing a race suit, a straw dink hat, and standing next to a Cougar.
please more of the gt40 ;)
SAAC, WITHOUT THIS CLUB AND RICK KOPEC SHELBY CARS WOULD NOT BE WORTH THAT THEY ARE TODAY.
NO SEATBELTS while driving the GT40 ?? ;//
Who need seatbelts..
where'd you read that? The Zl1 was almost a second slower, which is still pretty remarkable I must say considering it's only 55 thousand, on /tracks/nordschleife.html
I thought this was supposed to end with the 1 of 1 car getting crushed by a tank? Isn't that how this magazine rolls?
This female presenter isn't fake. Good stuff.
Correct me if I'm wrong but is that a late 60's dodge dart at 8:27
Isn't Roadkill supposed to come out today?
it shouldnt matter what car brand your a fan of, if you live in america you should appreciate the history and how shelby/ford in the daytona coupe lead america into the worlds number one spot beating ferrari and all the big time brand names
did u look at the little bracket above the zl1? ford gt 7:40, and it's "build" cars, built is past tense, oh smart one
Surprised there is no SC-1s out there. Not allowed to compete??
Look closely...there was one shown from the rear early in the show
Esses carros são lindos, e potentes.
Am I the only one around here that likes anything with wheels and an engine?
Ok to be a fanboy but stop the hate vs other cars.
Just a couple things I'd like to comment on. It's a shame there was no Shelby Dodge footage from the event. It's more of a shame to see a vintage race car mothballed into some museum piece.
Does anyone know anything about the red 68 Shelby behind Elana in the first scene? Maybe suspension or engine details?
Sweet cars. Although I'd hate to see what would happen to those two not wearing there harness even at low speeds.
I'm talking Race tracks not quarter Miles and Yes the GLHS beat out the 1967 GT350 around a circuit. They were the fastest things that Shelby made until the modern 'stangs. Production wise anyways.
Praise The Lord for them knockers in that GT 40
I have a question for everyone in the comments, what would you rather have; a gt40 replica or a Lamborghini gallardo? I can't decide. There are arguments for both.
That's not true...you cared enough to comment. Thanks sweetie!

Lol, the 2008 GT500 was modified with stock parts by hennesy to have 1000HP and go 266 MPH :)
You know what this video needed? A Camaro or a Corvette beating one of those little fords on the track. That would of put the cherry on top the cake and would of made the video a 100% better. LMFAO!
R.I.P Carol Shelby.
@6:32 Polished Aluminum Daytona Coupe!!!!! :-D...
Forget Exotics, that Cougar race car is my dream car. Can I have it....please?
Elana really knows her stuff.
I also would like to compliment her on her physical assets.
Damn. :-)
exactly !
And another one right before the SVT Raptor ealry in the 4 minute time
Why isnt there any more ROADKILL
ok, thanks for clarifying
No seat belts in the GT40?
Nice bod :)
no seatbelt in the gt40?
you should get a Viper
I'm surprised they didn't show a Dodge Shelby Charger
Reminds me of high tower from Police Academy. But you know...white.
FLAGGED!
I'll take your word for it, my sites a forum so the times may not always be legitimate, as for the four times ford went the nurb ring where they using the gt? or a mustang?
Dual clutch transmissions blow... Having a manual is what muscle cars is about, not just mashing a gas and having the car do all the work
My favourites American cars
Gt 40 and essex wire my favoret wish I had one :/
