I also use center AF because i usually crop for IG anyway. I prefer center because I know I’m not missing focus if I’m tracking ball and player well and key-framing to keep them centered for IG reels or social is minimal Great video as always thanks man!
So as for auto focus we all know now is preferred, the main info i think we all need is response time settings and actual MENU settings, take us into your menu settings and let's see those, that's most important to a lot of us.
This was helpful and thanks for taking the time to make this video. I have a Sony A7iii and Sony FE 100-400mm F4.5 and sometimes autofocus misses some of my shots when I shoot Hi+ continuous photos. I'm mainly shooting track and field so the action is similar to basketball. I'll play around the wide/zone/center focus area more. Thanks again!
Autofocus on the 100-400mm can definitely be a bit slower than the 70-200mm (f4 and f2.8) from my experiences using it but with some settings tweaks definitely still serviceable
Hi Peter, good video. I was wondering what your shutter speed is like for your video? If your shooting 60fps will it then be 1/120? Typical rule as you know but I am new to video and was wondering if it's ok to go past 1/120 if I'm at 60fps? What are you typically at? Forgive my newbie question ✌️
I’ll typically bring my shutter speed to around 1/250-1/400 range when filming sports in 60fps because I like the sharper look with less motion blur for fast paced sports, though you’re correct in saying that 1/120 is the standard when filming in 60fps. It’s always ok to use a different shutter than what is standard as long as you understand what it is doing to your image and choose to do so intentionally.
Videos are always helpful! Is there a certain picture profile or recording format like cine4 you used on the a7iii? I see a lot of people recommend shooting in cine4 cause the a7iii can’t handle slog 3.
Peter, I got my new Sony 2.8 70-200 and filmed with the a6400 and I continued to miss focus tracking the ball in the air after a shot attempt and I don’t know what the issue is. I used center zone as well
Loved the video. Would love to hear any additional thoughts you have when it comes to newbie videography mistakes or best tips when filming action like basketball.
I just bought my A7iii camera and also still learning how to use it. I just want to know if you are in the manual mode and also what settings do use. Thanks
Amazing video, quick question what if I have like a older model camera but I’m not recording anything crazy like the 70d, should I do face auto tracking or area auto focus
When I had my Canon 77D way back I used area AF, though it’s been a while and I can’t really speak to what would be best now or how that tech is implemented into those cameras
Hello, I am having an issue with autofocus in one of the gyms I frequently film basketball games where there is a scoreboard on the side of the court by half line. As I move my camera across from one side of the court to the other following the game, my A73 tries to focus on this scoreboard and things go blur. This keeps happening until that scoreboard moves out of the frame. I use Sony FE4/24-105 G OSS, with continuous autofocus and Wide, 1/250 F4.0. Any suggestion to fix this issue?
I’m new to videography and i shoot baseball usually behind a fence so I’m always struggling with focusing on subjects and not the fence. Any suggestions?
Hi I will be shooting futsal (football) video with my Sony a6400...with 16 55mm lens .....what should my settings be ??? Auto focus ? Frame rates ? Etc ...would be so glad if you could help me thanks....subscribed
I’d recommend similar focus and frame rate settings to what I use for basketball (focus settings are in this video, frame rate and shutter speed I usually do 120fps and 1/320 or 1/400). I have two videos on this channel called “best frame rate for sports videography” and “my camera gear and settings for sports videos” that I think you’ll find helpful.
I've been shooting for years A7III. I have the back focus button set up for AF and press it down and take the photo. It is in AF-C mode. Now I've been asked to do some videos for a birthday party. I never do vids but I said I'd give them basic ones. Focus would be nice lol. So I tested with my sony lens and I imagined the C-AF would just beep focusing after I pressed the back focus button. (I was following a dog around and it got out of focus fast). This did not work. It only kept focusing while I held the button down. This got tiresome fast. So how do I get the AF to work continuously without holding down the back focus button ..thanks.
Great video! Very informative! I saw in the comments, you use a Tiffen Pro Mist filter. Do you mind me asking which one you’re using? I’ve been debating on purchasing one but haven’t pulled the trigger just yet bc I’m not sure which one would be best.
I use the 1/4 stop tiffen pro mist filter. Talk about it a bit more in the filters section of my most recent “what’s in my camera bag” video as well if you’d like.
@@petersarellas ok thank you, I'll check it out now! Love your image quality/ grading of your basketball videos. I have nearly the same setup as you and was also wondering what picture profile you use, if any? I've tried a little bit of everything, even log, but I'm still not 100% satisfied.
@@paulmillsaps8251 I usually use HLG3 with 709 colour and have recently started using slog3 a bit as well with my A7iv. I really do love the look that I get after grading hlg3 though so I’d give that a try.
@@petersarellas oh ok! I’ve thought about using HLG3 but I have been hesitant for whatever reason. I wasn’t a big fan of log on the a7iii, due to it being 8bit and having some skin issues going on but I’m def going to try HLG3 now! Thanks so much!!! Keep up the awesome work 🦾
I used the a7iii for a long time and never ran into this issue, though I also never used it in extreme heat. I don’t think there is a setting to set the temp for overheating shutdown to “high” on that camera unfortunately, but you can move the screen away from the body of the camera and/or try using a dummy battery so that the actual battery that generates heat can be removed from the camera body while operating.
From my experience that may happen if another player walks through the frame and stays in front for a while, but as you saw from that one clip where the player in the grey was dribbling up the court, defenders quickly passing by often don’t impact continuous AF with many newer Sony cameras.
@@petersarellas Thank you for your answer. Just sharing.. I'm the new videographar of Maccabi Tel Aviv and today was my first game... I will try it next time :)
Do you also use your videography camera for photography or do you have a seperate one for it? Follow up question: could I use your sports photography camera for videography?
I use the A7iii as my video camera right now and since it’s a hybrid camera I also use it for photography when I need to take photos (though that isn’t very frequently). If you have a mirrorless camera that serves as a hybrid I see no issue with using it for photo and video but if you’re using a cinema camera then having a stills camera as well if that’s something you may need is a good idea.
The clips in this video were shot in HLG3 as I filmed them on a camera with 8-bit colour though when I’m filming on a camera with greater colour depth I film in SLog3
It is definitely still good and very useable (I’ve only used the mark 1 though would imagine the mark 2 is better) - I just personally found the f4 a bit better than the f2.8 m1 in AF
Thank you for the useful video!! I have a question. If you want make a highlight video that focus on only one player, which do you set wide or center in AF settings?
Usually wide and I still focus on capturing the entire game as per usual but will make an extra effort to get additional broll shots of the subject who the video will be centred around.

There are def some things here that can be transferred to any brand of camera!

Yes correct
