If you use the bottom from a second bottle underneath the first, you can put the light in the second bottom piece, which makes it easier to re-use without have to deal with emptying the stink bug since light is separate from where the stink bugs are trapped.
Buy a three gallon pump sprayer. Fill it with water, and about 6 ounces of the blue Dawn detergent. Spray them down. Works on all bugs. Won't kill them immediately, but the surfactant will eventually suffocate them. Works great on my porch. Kill wasps too. Non toxic to my dogs. Does not damage surfaces. Smells good.
The problem with spraying detergent is that it gets into streams and such, which then messes with local ecosystems. Detergents dissolve the mucus on fish (making them more susceptible to infection), kill bugs we don't want to kill, and make it easier for agricultural chemicals to get into the water.
Thank you! I learned Stink bugs lay eggs on the underside of leaves. Check any houseplants one had outside over the summer before bringing them indoors!
I have done this 10 years ago, can even make one with a smaller pop bottle with to catch fruit flies. For this on add some pc of fruit in the bottom. It works. For Stink bugs walking up where you can't reach them, say on the ceiling use the same kind of trap with a stick taped to it so you can reach them. Put some dawn dish soap in it with some water to drown them. I also use vinegar in the bottle to kill them. Then just stand the bottle up in a corner with the stick on it for next time. Good Luck ! 😉 For the one with a light make one with a false bottom and paint the one one the bottom and paint it black. This way you don't have to dig you light out. Just change the top bottle.
They are NOT my friends. Ready to try this and have my home back! I heard they die in the cold so I'll try this and once I catch some I'll set the whole thing outside overnight and then dump out the bugs into a Kroger bag, put into the dumpster outside, then start over in my house again with the same bottle. Praying for everyone. Peace!!!
I made the same exact trap last year, the only modification I performed was putting the LED light in a small zip-lock sandwich bag, to keep it clean from stink bug poo. I set it in my garage and let it run until the light died, it didn't catch a single bug, and I routinely have to use a leaf blower to remove the dead stink bugs from my garage and shed. I've yet to find a single trap that actually works. I've been battling stink bugs annually for 6 years now and the only thing that really works is insecticide.
Thanks for the video! My room one night had 8 stink bugs in it so in the morning I made this. In the first 10 minutes I caught one. Once again, thanks for the idea.
My house has been infested with stink bugs and or Asian beetles for the last several years in the fall. I had never thought too look up trapping them until this year. I found my first how to build a stink bug trap when they first showed up this fall. Whoever thought of this trapping method is a genius.
You know, since my baby left me, I've found a new place to dwell. Its down at Sootch's shop. Its called 'The Stink Bug Hotel' Thankyah. Thankyah vereh much-ah!
I think I'd tape the light on underneath and put some water with a little detergent in it inside the trap. Then with a lot of tape around the light to prevent light leak, you can turn it on and off easier.
Bag your air conditioners when you take them in for the winter.... was a large source of the stink bugs getting in and having to deal with them through the colder months.
* NOTICE; Does not work on siblings. * Thank you for this. Going to share this video with my aunt in Italy as they are a nuisance there. On a side note, one time we were eating outside at my aunts and my little nephew chewed one by accident haha.
I live in the Pacific w and never saw these till 2012. All of a sudden I've got these disgusting things everywhere! Here it is Feb. '15 and there in my house, gives me the creeps especially when I wake up and there's one on my bedside table staring at me like it can't wait for breakfast, redressed gross! Can't wait to try this trap!! Think it will work for fruit flies too?
Alternative to the click light is to use a solar LED outdoor light, break it down so the light is inside with the panel outside to charge up during the daytime. You could also put a small bit of Dawn soap in the lower bits of the 2 liter, that will insure they die fast.
Just wanted to clarify that those aren’t stink bugs - they’re squash bugs! To get rid of them you have to check the undersides of the leaves and look for copper/bronze colored groups of eggs. Get a bucket of warm soapy water and a clear plastic spoon. Scrape the eggs off with a plastic spoon after pouring some soapy water on the eggs to dissolve the adhesive and dump them right in the bucket. If you see a group of tiny black things that almost look like spiders on the leaves crush them all, those are the babies. If you see other stink bugs use the spoon and make them fall into the bucket. Spray Neem Oil on the undersides of the leaves to repel and kill the bugs also without causing damage to the plant - it’s natural and not a harsh pesticide.
Yeah its the same trap for fruit flies as well but you put some apple juice or anything sweet smelling at the bottom and it will attract all the fruit flies and they can't fly out.
@@katicus7987 And a few drops of clear dish soap to make it a bit sticky so the fruit flies can't get out. You can actually do that in a small cup for fruit flies, cover it with plastic wrap, and cut a few holes it it, even large holes. The fruit flies get in, but can't get out.
I do the same thing for flies. Put dog poop in the bottom. The can't get out and I just through it way after a couple days and make a new one. I just don't tape the top and bottom together. :) great vid sootch
We don't have those much here in Southern Nevada but we do have scorpions. Easiest way to get rid of them is take away their food source. That is a clever little trap though.
Instead of soap or water, any oil is best. Yup, they sink - game over. No crawling, stinking, etc. we used to catch them and throw them in a tin with oil which is also a way to do it manually. However, I like this guy's system, but I will cut another bottle, place light in it, tape it under this contraption. Then I add oil to the upper trap.
I think I'd tape the light to the bottom, turning it on first, then fill the bottom with soapy water. That way it will drown them as they come in. Yeah, you'll have to retape to turn the light off and on, but some 2" electrical tape will probably be good for a few times of reuse.
In many cases, they’re an invasive species from Asia. Mostly China, and Japan. If you live in a fairly agricultural region, they can be a serious crop damage problem for soy bean, and corn producers. They’re disgusting pests.
Robert Twiss Stink Bugs are native to China, Japan, Korea and other Asian regions (according to Wikipedia), but in September 1998, some Stink Bugs were collected in Allentown, *Pennsylvania* and were "accidently introduced" to that part of the US. Over the years, they have spread outward and by 2012, Stink Bugs were being seen in *California, Washington, & Oregon.* They are annoying and a nuisance (stating the obvious, I know....lol) but they are harmless to humans and pets/animals. They do eat plants, though, and have destroyed crops. Stink bugs are (unfortunately) able to survive long periods of cold or heat, and also withstand long periods without eating. (They get their water from plants when they consume the plants).
Hi I'm from Down Under Australia, we have a red stinkbug "harlequin bugs" that get inside and invade veggie gardens looking to spread bacterial crap into the soil. I'm hoping this trap will work, the more I kill the more I am happy. They are smart, they never bothered with me until I started killing them, now when one sees me it starts running (maybe they know this from bug school lol)
Thanks for this video. It's 10F Degrees where I am I've already found a few in my house! Creepy crawley little monsters from hell. But what do you do with hem after you catch them? And what do they smell like when they die?
Have you any suggestions for re-purposing AA size Mini-Mag Lites? I have gathered up 4 from around the house and replaced them with LED lights. They're too small to turn into silencers. They have strong aluminum tubes. Sure I could convert them to LED, but you can buy two new lights for the price of one conversion kit.
After all those knives you have reviewed you're using that safety knife lol. I honestly didn't even know a stink bug infestation was a thing. what did you do with them after they were caught?
Just wondering, has anyone tried adding some type of bug insecticide on a cotton ball dropped down inside of the bottle just to the side of the light to kill the stink bugs after they get in the trap. If so, how did it do? And is it a good , or bad idea? Here in Georgia, we are covered up with them. They even cover the outside of the house and come inside as well. I try getting them to crawl up on a piece of paper and shake them off just outside the door. Everyone knows what they smell like if you make them mad or squish them. If not, It's Horrible! I just thought I'd let some that aren't aware that the same type lights are available at the Dollar Tree. So, for $1, it's a much better deal. They also carry the electrical tape and masking tape. But, I'm not sure if the Dollar Tree Stores are everywhere in the United States. I haven't looked, but the Dollar General, Family Dollar, or some other discount stores may carry them for a bit less than $5. Thanks for the video.
I tried this and it never worked. They like to hang around my fluorescent light around my kitchen window. Let the trap sit overnight with all other lights off and nothing went into the trap

My house was full of these things last year.
Thanks for the video. I will definitely be trying this!
It’s awesome
LED "PUCK" lights are $1.00 at Dollar Tree stores!!!

solar powered walk lights from walmart - recharges in the daytime, burns for about 8 hours at night.
At least no batteries to mess with.

Rebecca Putman I'm going to try this, I freaked out a sprayed one with Lysol and bleach this morning I think it was dying from the chemicals.

Nick Searcy tells us how to catch stink bugs. I half expect Boyd Crowder to show up and kill them.
Good info.
When full of bugs, fill with tannerite and shoot!
Stink Bug Trap. Two big thumbs up!!
Thank you, Sootch, spent the day hunting them... 1 female bug breeds 400, got to squish them.

I like how you used some thinner pieces of green tape to give it more of a decorative charm
Hello: I saw that same trap with I am thinking sugar water to trap yellow jackets.
My minnow traps for fishing a set up almost the same way except I use two 2liter tops so you can get the fish out of the bottom.
how do you empty it and reuse / change batteries?
this is awesome. i don't have stink bugs but i do have box elders which are similar and i bet it works for them too.
Now what do you do with it? How do you get your light back?
Just a question..... What does the stink bug stink smell like?
Is this good for outdoors? I need to get rid of them in my garden

Great idea!
Plug up the hole and give it a shake, could be used as a back massager after a hard day at work

I have tried it. Next day i found my sister inside the trap :/
What do?
leave her in there until she calms down:D
My sister is still inside the trap. VERY angry.
You can trap insects like bees or wasps if you leave some coke in the bottom of the bottle and don't put a light in
Very clever. THX.
Good idea! I bet it works for June Bugs too.
why not use a solar light Walmart 1.00
Never going to get that light back, but it’s worth it. What about those Japanese beetles?
Do you throw it in a bonfire after, or?
Oh my goodness thank you I needed this the other one I tried didn't work but this new and improved way is amazing great video keep up the good work:)
I use the same thing but I put sugar and water but I use it for wasp and yellow jackets
works well for fruit flys to but instead of light for bait use juice that has gone off
Pretty cool.
when i first saw this video come up i thought it said cheap DIY stink bomb

A lot better than the nasty pesticides we sprayed. Better for kids and pets. I would grease the top inside with vaseline.
That also works for bees if you put something sticky in the bottom
