Hi Jef! Really like your stuff, especially the DF, Cataclysm and KSP vids! I have a 20hrs prison running with 62 inmates. You need a laundry room for the “Clothing” and to a lesser degree for the “Hygiene” need. But you’ll need “Deployment” to assign prisoners to the laundry room to work. Then you need to make time in the regime for “Work” otherwise they clutter the corridors with the laundry baskets as they abandon them when their working shift ends.
If you're going to build a new prison, a few tips: Only have 1 entrance to prison with 3 large jail doors and put metal detectors there. Also put them on the exit of the canteen to find knifes being stolen. The offices don't need to be connected to the prison if you have janitors. Build a fence around your whole prison (it's free, only labour). dismantle means it gets put in storage and you can build it again for free (# next to item). Use more regular/staff doors so people don't get stuck.
It's also VERY important to have a storage area. it costs nothing (can be outside) but saves you loads of money when you're dismantling and shifting things around. That way, you never dump perfectly usable things. (avoid Dump command like a plague)
The Prison Architect Wikia is a good source of information. Another one is google. Learning all the intricacies of Alpha 9 is not easy, especially the Deployment and Laundry requirements. It's also good to have a one big workshop for money-making. When you learn about all those and plan your prison from the start, it gets easier. Another good thing might be to take only low risk prisoners while learning the game. Hope this helps, Jef.
As for doors, you can right-click to open them as a temporary solution. But it's usually best to have all important doors (except for the one to the outside world) locked OPEN during the day, unless there are riots or other considerations. After you have decent money, bookshelves are good to have in cells, 30 x prisoner is not bad to avoid crowding the recreation areas. Have trash cans in kitchens and canteens for knives AND have only 1 or 2 canteen entrances with metal detectors => no knives.
One thing I discovered the hard way is that the laundry basket object doesn't have the "dump" property. If you create a basket, it cannot be undone. I created wayyyyyyy too many of them as the laundry room "complains" when there's no basket around (they're all over the prison), the basket being a requirement for the room. So now I'm stuck with tons of baskets but the clutter situation is improving after many days of hard work (8 hours a day of work split in 2)... strangely inmates feel better?!
I won't have enough space, but: 1-at the start, don't make individual cells, make 1 big holding cell. 2-Food Quality LOW Food Quantity High 3-keep the gards ratio 1:3, 30 prisoners, 10 guards. 4-2 doctors 5-Janitors not that Crucial for early game 6-Right click doors to open them 7-Dump item = Throw in the garbage, Dismantle = Stock 8-3 meals a day | 2 showers a day | at least 1 hour of free time 9-Visitation: I personally have 4 tables for 70 prisoners, and its FAR enough I hope you'll read it
Besides the main gate/entrance which should be a large jail door, you should build a secondary route and entrance for your staff members like workmen and cooks to access, so they can bring in food and materials and carry out the garbage. It should be affixed with staff doors.
Alpha 10 is out! Riot police is a blast... pretty violent though as I lost 7-10 inmates from a single intervention! When there's an ongoing riot the room where it takes place becomes red and you get a message and suspenseful music! Plus they have their new prison danger level indicator which helps monitor and get ready for what's going to happen. Finally they ordered some items in the objects menu... I think the "ironing table" is new... I also think performance has improved! Nice update!
tips: jef, you should go slower for spending, start with only the basics and at a small size. you need only a holding cell for the first day, cell block is a bonus, but 2 cell block are too much, you dont have time to do all of it in one day, neither the money. you also should research for guards to do patrol, then you can assign guards to most used area, so they can take care of jail doors.
15 guys assigned to it and I think I made up to 4000$ when budget came - so that can help upset a negative cashflow for sure! Only thing is that there's lots of transport of the "sheetmetal" from deliveries to the workshop...
The most important thing in the game is to have the metal detectors at the entrance/exit out of the canteen. If you don't then every prisoner will have a knife in a matter of minutes. Good luck policing that.
This has to be the funniest commentary on a good game I've seen in a long time he just basically let them all out and they wouldn't leave lol and then Hancock was the ring leader of the group too funny how they would rather stab each other than leave lol
ahhhh. This video takes me back to the old days of Jefmajor. im talking way back when he did DF 40d. Hope you keep making videos in this game for awhile Jef.
Oh wow, I knew from video one it was going to be a wreck but I just never knew how bad it was going to be. XD Lord I have not laughed so hard at the end there in a long time. Thank you Jef, I hope we see more soon.
Yeah, but that's exactly my point! It doesn't make much sense: The guard comes, take the prisoner down, and remove his contraband, he them lefts it right there and left to accomplish his "duties" (like patrolling an empty Yard), while the task to remove the contraband is left to the worker (who might be very busy doing other stuff). IMO, they have to fix that game logic...
Instead of dumping objects, you should build a storage room and tell them to dismantle. That way you will store them away and can use them again later if you expand, without having to buy new stuff. Also you need to get laundry going ASAP. For some reason the devs saw fit to lock laundry behind a final tier research thing (prison labor) even though basically your prison will riot over not having clean clothes. You can only make prisoners do laundry, your janitors will sadly not do it.
Ya, those laundry baskets are forever. I have a few too many as well. My prisoners work 6 hours a day. I'm sending Jef a few tips and saves to help him, to "underp him" because he asked :). I'll drop you a copy too.
I went to his twitter expecting that to have been a cruel joke. Pretty excited now (which is so sad). My prediction, considering Jef's taste in games, is Don't Starve.
Hey thanks! I wish they'd implement deleting jobs from the jobs tab in the reports. I assign a prisoner to solitary, but there's somebody there already or some delay. Sometimes the inmate will walk by himself towards the solitary block. Seems if he didn't go but there order is still there, if I select him and right click to a solitary cell another order is made to another guard. The inmate has 2 escort jobs waiting but you can only cancel from the specific guards! I suspect this impacts how...
If a guard is watching the metal detector go off he'll grab the prisoner if he isn't occupied. I've had guard automatically searching them when I only had one detector through the only door to the canteen.
Your prison man... Riots, squalor, brutality. It was understaffed and shoddy, half flooded, filled with knife wielding maniacs and broken doors. It crazed prisoners are still convinced they are forcefully imprisoned even though they routinely walk over the bodies of their slain captors. Truly, it is a place of the damned. Amazing. When are you restarting this? :D
Jef, i think you can prevent an outcome like this by installing metal detectors at choke points where prisoners walk through regularly, like the prison block entrance.
One final experiment involved creating a second shower and using the deployment tool to restrict it to "minimum security"... yet it seems all units including normal/high were attracted to this shower as it was closer to the cell block than the other one. Or I may just not understand the purpose of the color items in the deployment tool, I thought it was to create something similar to burrows in DF, anyways I need to research this and this is alpha anyways. But it's lots of fun loll. Take care.
After having watched previous of Jef's LPs again, I realized that he mostly played sandbox games recently. Maybe a story-driven game, or at least one that can reach to an objective (Rome Total War, for instance, was like that) would do him good. That's, of course, under the assumption that he lacks motivation. Also, I will not recommend/ask anything, Jefmajor has the last word on what he wants to do.
-reads description- I'm sorry Jef but it appears that there is nothing we can do about your derp factor. Its too funny to watch. Well at least I think so.
The guy knocked the guard down and stole his keys, lol! I think this game has a nice idea, it just sucks it have some problems (like after founding contraband the guards will left it right there... That's stupid) and you can't freaking speed up time... But in general, it's a pretty cool game.
You know jef, the prison did actually run better and with less incidents when the prisoners were alone. Your next prison project should be zero-contact prison, where the prisoners have as little contact with anybody as possible, preferably even other prisoners. Monitoring everything only with cameras etc..
So I guess the problem was the guards and the whole "prison" thing. As soon as the guards left and the doors were opened, everything was fine and they all lived (or got stabbed) happily ever after in the family friendly prison.
This was a smashing success, lol. Your layout is very weird, jef! Can't you make small 2x2 cells? Seems like spaced isn't used if just a bed and a toilet are required. I'd also build the cells towards the backend of the jail, and try to keep everything in one "building", like one long building.
hey jef to make money one of the ways to do it is make industrys such as the shop or laundry places that will also do the clothing need for your prisoners
This looks like how most of the rounds of "Space Station 13" ends when the security department decides to be assholes. Although there is usually a lot more fire and improvised weapons involved :)
doesn't work. the guards don't automatically stop the prisoner even when the detectors go off. you to watch out yourself and then manually order your guard to go search the offender.
"If you guys wanted to eat so bad you shouldn't have broke the fucking doors" Jef is the best warden, I swear
And, "You guys aren't going to have much fun eating, you shouldn't have killed one of the cooks!"

24:07 how does the prison run MORE efficiently when you have no staff and all the doors are open?
Gotta say, I really like this series so far. I look forward to more in the near future.
One thing insomnia comes in handy for is being up so late that i can watch these amazing videos when they are uploaded :D
It's also VERY important to have a storage area. it costs nothing (can be outside) but saves you loads of money when you're dismantling and shifting things around. That way, you never dump perfectly usable things. (avoid Dump command like a plague)

the reason why you can't see some of the rooms sometimes as if the lights were out is because your guards aren't close enough to supervise the area
As for doors, you can right-click to open them as a temporary solution. But it's usually best to have all important doors (except for the one to the outside world) locked OPEN during the day, unless there are riots or other considerations.

Something about seeing Kamina before that message just makes it perfect
21:25, so THIS is how you run a prison with no guards...honor system works surprisingly well

if you watch this lp backwards, the prison gets less crapier xD Love your vids man. Keep em rollin :D
Smartest thing to do is to have offices, med centers or stuff like that surrounding the cell areas, so they cannot dig directly out of the cell.
I cried, I suffocated, my sides hurt all this from laughter in the end. What have you done to me Jef.
oh and a tip you can stop stop prisoner arrival during construction by shutting them off
The most important thing in the game is to have the metal detectors at the entrance/exit out of the canteen. If you don't then every prisoner will have a knife in a matter of minutes. Good luck policing that.
Looks like a great game, disturbingly realistic too. The visual style and sounds are very fitting as well.
please have another go at this I badly want to see another disaster :P good luck to you Jef and I wish you many more derps in the future
I like how the prison seemed to do much better after you opened all the doors and fired everybody.
I love how that one prisoner knocked the guard out and stole his keys
Oh wow, I knew from video one it was going to be a wreck but I just never knew how bad it was going to be. XD Lord I have not laughed so hard at the end there in a long time. Thank you Jef, I hope we see more soon.

You do what ever the hell you want, when you want and I respect you for that
I'm literally crying now, seriously Jef , I don't think iv'e laughed this much in a long while, thx
Just watched your old intro video again... THE MEMORIES!!!!
Instead of dumping objects, you should build a storage room and tell them to dismantle. That way you will store them away and can use them again later if you expand, without having to buy new stuff.

i know. but doing it again would be so god damn awesome that i could literally start to cry
All I can do is watch as I see minimum security prisoners steal knives from the kitchen while Jef just turns his head.
prisoner flashes knife right as Jef has camera cursor right over him
doesn't notice
best moments of my life

Dont get ran over by the JESUS
This is a very good example of how every round of space station 13 is
Jef, i think you can prevent an outcome like this by installing metal detectors at choke points where prisoners walk through regularly, like the prison block entrance.
I've noticed that a worker has to come along and turn it into trash before anyone is able to move it
Welcome to your new home *dead bodys on the floor, broken chair, someone is bunching the toliet.*
2 minutes in and I see the guy's with knives and I just had this sudden thought saying 'Well just another day in Prison Architect."
The janitor just has to run in while the prisoners are showering xD
One final experiment involved creating a second shower and using the deployment tool to restrict it to "minimum security"... yet it seems all units including normal/high were attracted to this shower as it was closer to the cell block than the other one. Only is Jef's playthroughs would the prisoners choose to stay in the prison, and then take it over, and live fairly peacefully with each other.

Look on the bright side. If any of your guards survive the first day they will be friggin SUPER COMMANDOS!
Jeff has discovered the perfect way to run a prison
-reads description- I'm sorry Jef but it appears that there is nothing we can do about your derp factor. Its too funny to watch. Well at least I think so.
Strange, since I had put a bin in my prison, but the guard doesn't rightly take the stuff right away...
I also noticed a prisoner, during the yard riot, knock out a guard and escaping using his keys
KoDP is also released in GoG and there's an iPad version.
I like how people climb over tables to get to their cells.
Watching Jef play this is funnier than anything hollywood can produce XD
The guy knocked the guard down and stole his keys, lol! I think this game has a nice idea, it just sucks it have some problems (like after founding contraband the guards will left it right there... That's stupid) and you can't freaking speed up time...

"Prison is near a full blown riot. Better fire my guards."
Fences are free, build them to set up secure perimeter
That ending is how all Space Station 13 rounds seem to end. With the AI recognizing that the whole thing is fucked and opening all the airlocks.
Really fun and enjoyable this series, more please if you enjoy playing this ^^
Prisoners can easily access sharp objects in the storage in their free time as you have no door there.
I love this LP so much!
Wow, its like Dwarf Fortress in a permanent tantrum spiral. Where's the special lever room over a lava pit when you need one?
He should add CCTV's so that he can have a wide range. The reason why rooms are shaded in because no one has any surveillance of that area.
They'd probably smash their doors down and all of them would probably turn into the hulk afterwards.
So I guess the problem was the guards and the whole "prison" thing. As soon as the guards left and the doors were opened, everything was fine and they all lived (or got stabbed) happily ever after in the family friendly prison.
No sometimes prisoners can pick up the trash containing the contraband. Unless the trash is brought to the garbage dump area is it safe.
Even the building? Damn, that's an amazing criminal right there!
That was the greatest clusterfuck I've had the privilege to watch.
"The janitor would clean the cells IF ALL THE PRISONERS WERENT TRYING TO KILL HIM!" xD my sides
Really liking this series, hope you do more after this :)
Lmao such a giant prison fail!!!! Both you and the prisoners! So hilarious! I love your vids! They are the best!!! :)
Hilarious LP. Well played. Can't wait for the next LP of any game.
"Let's check RUclips's frontpage to see if there's anything new... Yep." Here's hoping everything's all right, Jef, may your good health be eternal.
i realised today that it might just be best to stop accepting prisoners after 15 or so, until you get all the necessary buildings
Presumably the prisoners don't leave because they don't want to be sentenced for escaping.
Jef, fences are free. You could build a fence around the prison.
That was a really confusing numbering system, but good tips if he can make any sense out of it.
This was a smashing success, lol. Your layout is very weird, jef! Can't you make small 2x2 cells? Seems like spaced isn't used if just a bed and a toilet are required. I'd also build the cells towards the backend of the jail, and try to keep everything in one "building", like one long building.
Cells need to be 2x3 or 3x2 (horizontal or vertical respectively) or larger.
hey jef to make money one of the ways to do it is make industrys such as the shop or laundry places that will also do the clothing need for your prisoners
17:02 Why is that guard walking through the wall down there?! :D
Jef, is your phone ringtone the ship upgrade screen music from Star Control 2?
Please Jef do some more DF adventures. Loved them
That cook was cooking like his life depended on it.
you need to place trash bins down before contraband will be able to be disposed of
Would a fence around the Prison or an extra wall around stop them from digging there way out?
i say keep playing this one out. you got the money now, just hire new people. Much funnier than starting a new one.
Haha, an amazing game xD I'd like to see more in the future if you're up to it.
This looks like how most of the rounds of "Space Station 13" ends when the security department decides to be assholes. Although there is usually a lot more fire and improvised weapons involved :)
Four days in. The mobs are eyeing their pitchforks.
doesn't work. the guards don't automatically stop the prisoner even when the detectors go off. you to watch out yourself and then manually order your guard to go search the offender.
I kind of see the reason, I think they are trying to reach a goal before a set time.
