A plucky Brit in a crop duster with a makeshift torpedo strapped to the bottom managed to destroy one of the most advanced warships in history... RULE BRITANNIA, BRITANNIA RULES THE WORLD
Jef, when you're firing from poor angles where you risk the torpedo sliding off the hull, set the torpedo to magnetic and it'll be far more likely to actually explode. Everything under a 60-70 degree angle in good weather should probably be magnetic. Also, using the manual computer to calculate speeds is usually a good idea to confirm your 3:15 measurement is accurate.
Bollocks...Jef's already missed Rhineubung.... I really wanted to see him try to torpedo Hood or the Ark Royal! EDIT: oh and BTW most of the torpedo attacks made by U-boats were actually from the surface historically speaking, just gonna get that out there. :P
You know, I'm not sure if the title of this episode (Manual Murder, same as the last episode) is wrong or not, but I'm as far as you spotting a couple of ships off the the coast of Spain, and all I can think is "oh man, if he blew a neutral Spanish ship up, it'd totally be Manuel murder."
Just a tip on range. If you sail at motor RPM at around 230 in calm weather (if luck would have it), you'll only get 8 kts but the range will be around 33.500-35.500 km. It is a pain to get the crew to give you the right speed but fiddle with the speed dial and check with the nav officer for range. Keep in mind only 0.5 knots off the ideal will cut the range several hundred, or thousands km.
My great grandfather was actually in the Kriegsmarine during the war. Thankfully he wasn't stationed on a U-Boot though. One time he told me how a massive hangover saved his life because he wasn't on his ship when it was bombed because of that.
+Remoniq Well it certainly saved his ass and he got to live to the ripe age of 87. A more distant family member of mine, I think my great great uncle or something was an airplane mechanic and in the last days of the war he got drunk and crashed a plane on the runway and was almost shot for it. Man my family sure likes drinking.
+Remoniq The last days of the war were just insane I guess. On one hand you got the guys that know it's over and just try to survive and maybe not get captured by the russians and on the other hand there are the fanatics that still believe in the 'Endsieg' that take their job way to serious.
I used to work with someone who used to be a submariner, and he would often complain about how he was constantly edging around butts and crotches. So, +1 to realism for SH3 I guess.
Jef, if a ship is running completely dark, you can safely assume that it is enemy. Neutral countries shipping usually have a special light which makes the flag visible for miles, so as not to mistake it. On the other hand, ships of countries taking part in the war run with all light turned off, so it's to spot them at night. The mod emulates that fact.
In German, "z" makes a "ts" sound, and "e" makes the sound of the first "e" in "heckle." "S" makes the sound English uses for "z." "U" makes a similar sound to English's "oo." So "zur See" could be transcribed as "tsoor Zeh."
UZO = UBoot Ziel Obtik or Master Sight. This sight was kept below until necessary then placed on the bridge at the Kaleun's order. There's a scene in Das Boot showing this.
Within my campaign, Ive seen Italian ships have spot lights on their flag being allies till 43. Unless some ships have lazy crew, that's how ive been able to tell if a ships are ally or not during the night. Also, you can get the head watch officer and hydromaphone dude to call out ranges/general bearing on a selected ship.
Jef i have been playing the curious adventure recently and i really like it its like ftl, mount and blade and dungeons and dragons mixed together with exploration and unique characters to top it off. its fun addictive and replay ability is its biggest asset. i would love to see you play it on the channel great episode BTW
@Jef that was a really good shot, probably the best so far in the way of trigger control. I think the angle on bow was about 5 degrees off, but the rest was good. I especially enjoyed that you set up the desired target position and angle as part of your attack plan. You should stop using the periscope to fire, it fucks you over every time. The angle on bow problems happen when you input the target computer to the periscope and then move it around. All your previous set up precision goes out the window then. Either use the periscope only (Dick OKane) or use the targetting computer only, I would say. Good luck.
I've done exhaustive testing (read: sometimes I run out of deck gun ammo) and can confirm that the flak gun does no hull damage. The fires it can start don't seem to have an effect, either. To me, that's immaterial. A good captain shoots everything at everything, all the time.
Based jef thank you always a good day when you put out a vid and I definitely needed it today, long time supporter (Bengal Hairybasement and before) keep it up you're talented man
hey jef, just wanna let you know theres a faster way of calculating ships speed. Look at the ship reference manual and look at its length. Point to the ships nose and start the clock. Stop when the ship passes the mid line. Now you take its length and divide it by the time it took to pass thru it. You now have ships speed in m/s. Just multiply that by 2 to get knots
just to clarify, i meant when it fully passes thru the periscopes middle line. For example, a ship with 100m length passing from front to the end without moving the periscope in 20s, would equate in 100m / 20s. Thats 5m/s. multiply by 2 and you het the ships speed as 10knots
Jef, Loving the series, so many memories, Please do SH4 with TMO next? For now hope they send you somewhere other than down in africa, I'd bet the rains they do. Good Hunting Kaluen!
+Rex1987 Yup, but then SH3 did too. Trigger Maru Overhaul (TMO) is a similar mod to GWX and fixes a lot of issues. it makes it more playable. tough going from metric to imperial though if you've just been playing SH3
Pete Lovatt does Trigger Maru Overhaul work with the exspansion "u-boat missions"? i would wish someone would get there shit together and make a great Silent hunter 6 in the style of SH3 but with better UI, better crew magement, modern grafics and most important of all: very few bugs.
+Rex1987 Certainly is, TMO 2.5 is for SH4 1.5 (u-boat missions) works for both. I had hoped 5 would be 3 on steroids but i guess not. here's hoping there'll be a 6 that can match 3's efforts.
Your torpedo attack actually was done well in principle, but there are some pitfalls with the game that probably caused the miss. As you noted, the speed was too high. The game seems to very liberally round the rangelines you draw on your map. It looked like the distance you drew was just shy of rounding down to 0.6, which would probably suggest that the actual speed was 6.5 or so. One thing I'd also recommend is using the "follow nearest contact" command with your sonar operator. This will keep the sonar contact line steady and easier to observe. With that said, I tend not to use the hydrophone on a 3:15 attack because the endpoint of the line doesn't accurately reflect the ship's position; usually, the ship is actually further away on that line. And I'm not sure that this was really that important in this case, but your AOB was a bit too high. The dials are more sensitive than tumblr, so I tend to use the observation tools on the periscope/UZO if I need a precise entry on the AOB. All of these are really minor issues but they get magnified when making an attack at what is essentially maximum range. Just gotta keep practicing!
Yo Jef, your submarine gets sunk on June 16th 1943 by an Australian aircraft. Just thought I'd let you know. Edit: Also, I wouldn't call the Bismarck "advanced", considering it was based off an outdated WW1 design and had an absolutely rubbish rudder set-up as well as a fire control system that broke every time its guns fired.
+TheD3rp Not to mention AA guns that could not shoot low enough to hit slow flying Gloster Gladiators. And it was JUST the entire RADAR system that broke everytime it fired. The rest of the fire control systems worked fine.
+TheD3rp Was still more than competant despite these, and it got taken out by a drunken Brit that thought the Bismark was his crops and he tried to crop-duster it.
Alright, let's see. The HMS Hood was an outdated battlecruiser(read: A ship not meant to engage battleships) that was due for a refit. She was assisted by the HMS Prince of Wales, a brand-new ship that was riddled with technical issues. Bismarck had support from the Prinz Eugen. Let's just say the Bismarck got incredibly lucky. First of all, in one of its opening salvos it managed to get an impossibly lucky hit on Hood's ammo stores, blowing the ship up with only 3 survivors. If that wasn't enough, Prince of Wales had a turret jam up and was forced to withdraw from the battle.
Haven't watched the whole video. Sorry. How do you resupply ammo to the deck gun precisely? Is that possible when the duck gun runs out or do you have to return to a base to completely resupply and get more ammo for the deck gun? I know it's in Weapons management but don't know how to go about it.
+DodgerOfBullets Fuck off with the fucking streams. I'd also like some proper videos of it rather than that low quality garbage. A lot has changed since he last made a REAL video on it.
Gunnar Konig Don't be so ungrateful. If he likes the game (which he does) then he'll probably go back to it. For now enjoy his streams and older videos damn you.
People comment on the W and E thing, but I'm more interested in knowing how a rowboat powered by a lawn mower engine and glued makeshift guns (according to your accurate report) disabled a warship... That was AMAZING! Did they recieve nukes as payload instead of torpedos?
+Lucas Ferreira I think he was referring to the Swordfish attack on the Bismarck, where one of these planes (seen as obsolete) managed to score a hit right on the battleship's rudder, preventing her from doing nothing else but turn in a large circle and basically dooming her against the British warships and airplanes.
+FabiAtRage You can zoom in on both of them. The difference is that the observation scope has lower (or no) magnification, but a larger aperture/field of view so that you can see things better at night (supposedly -- I haven't found it to be particularly helpful in-game).
+Rompa87 You can set them to speak English or German, I used to have it set to German voices but english text. you learn to fear the phrase Flugzeug Geshicht! (aircraft spotted)

Lies and slander.
47:44 "Why did that one go to space?"
It was probably trying to hit one of those Japanese lifeboats from the Silent Hunter 4 LP.

Yes, sir!
We are ready for war. xD
"Fire the torpedoes!"

Definitely ready for war.

your pun game is 10/10
+Huw Dawson I keep reading the same thing. Kind of expecting it at this point.
z.S. = zur See. You are right, it means "at Sea". "Leutnant zur See" would be, I think, midshipman in the Royal or US Navy.
I really I can't remember the last time I've been so excited for a new video.
Jef, this series is gold! Please keep up with them.

Liking this game a lot with the greywolfs mod. Thank you for explaining the grid for me. I did not know where they where pointing to in the messages.
red is port and green is starboard. if you are aiming at a ships port side you should set your angle on bow in the red.
+ace2high Yes basically best advice. Left on the dial is if you're shooting at their left side. Left side of boat is red, right is green.
port is red because port wine is generally red, at least that's what i was taught in school X)
+ace2high Oh hey I did not know it was color coded like that. Thank you! Redlight greenlight just got a lot more fun.
Kiros and port wine is left until dessert! brilliant :D

SILENT HUNTER. YAAAAS. JEF IS BACK. YAAAAAAASSS.
That cut to cinematic view at the last few seconds of the video shocked me. I thought your U-boat got a chunk taken out of it by some ghost cannons.
@Jef that was a really good shot, probably the best so far in the way of trigger control. I think the angle on bow was about 5 degrees off, but the rest was good. YESSSSS!!!!! I've been soooo excited for this.
Nice Eddie Izzard reference Jef. xD
Man im so glad you're back.
On a compass, the W and E that stands for west and east respectively spells "we". That's how i remember
When I was a kid I remembered it by the saying Never Entertain Sexy Women.
+Crushinator192837465 Oh East? On thought you meant Weast.
+Crushinator192837465 Never Eat Soggy Wheat
No bullshit that's the pre-school limerick that still sticks with me. Something about cereal? LOL
+One F Jef I was taught that it was "Never Eat Soggy Wieners" which now that i think about it is fuckin' weird.
+GreenEggsAndSlam What I was taught before my brothers alienated me was Never Eat Soggy Weetbix, which is ironic since dry Weetbix is shit.

I always come back to one F occasionally. "War is never quite that simple" I think WW2 was quite simple on good vs bad haha.
Track ball? What is this technology you speak of?
for ET5535 just zoom in closer. there is another grid that appears when you are fully zoomed into a grid square I believe.
+M3ta7h3ad Yes but the fully zoomed in grid square is not marked so it's kinda useless.
+One F Jef is it not just 3 across 5 down? doh. Ah well fair one, I'll get back in my box and just enjoy your vids :)

Oh those 100% realistic ww2 enemy pop ups.

you mean the fire control that took down the biggest uk ship while taking almost no damage?

I love these.

+FabiAtRage You can zoom in on both of them. The difference is that the observation scope has lower (or no) magnification, but a larger aperture/field of view so that you can see things better at night (supposedly -- I haven't found it to be particularly helpful in-game).
