This is just what is needed for partial rv backup. Operates the ac and stuff perfectly. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxOTeIs0vv4_9B5hsmnLsk9r930uDQLu_Y is quieter than my rv generator. Only suggestion is that it needs a fuel shutoff valve. So it is easier to store.

Between you and " small engine mechanic " I've learned a lot and have repaired a few generators for friends and family, just run of the mill carburetor issues but it's still a good feeling to be able to get a machine running in time of need, so thanks for taking the time to show us how it's done

When setting valve lash, you can leave the hex wrench on
so you keep it clocked where you want it while tightening it down.
The oil is the life blood of the engine!
Turned out great! Hope you sell it quick
Thanks and see you next time...

Gasoila is a salve-type product, used in sounding large fuel storage tanks.
It is smeared on the end of the tape bobber, and when the tape measure is retrived, any water will show up bright reddish-purple, to indicate water presence. A small tube lasts years. You could put it on a wire, and inserted into the crankcase to check for water.....just another tool, for your arsenal..

Great fix. I had a similar 10hp Briggs snow engine on a snow blower with a bad compresson release on the cam shaft. Could not start it on the recoil starter, but could start it on the electric starter. Same terrible Nikki carburetor. Customer does not want to fix the cam shaft. Briggs has several updates on it. I told them no warrantee from me because it may burn out the electric starter. The blower cost about 2K new. Can't understand why they won't spend two hunderd to fix it. Thanks for great video's.

James, on the valve adjustment, what you can try is set the clearance, then spin the engine until that valve spring is in compression. Then tighten the lock nut. The load on the adjuster usually will keep it locked and won’t turn. I Use this method on motorcycle engines with the stem and nut adjusters, when I’m not pulling cams to change out shims under buckets.

Another great video James, I'm really liking your channel! One little tip, if the head is off the engine and you haven't run it before, you can do a simple gas test to check the valves are sealing. With the spark plug fitted and tightened, turn the head upside down and pour some gas into the combustion chamber then look into the ports and see if any gas is leaking past the valves. It's not quite as thorough as a proper leakdown test but it would have shown up the bad valve on this engine and saved you the hassle of taking the head off again.

Good job. Having recovered more than a few flood (submerged) small engines, I caution on the assumption that full oil can be misleading. Water sits on the bottom, under oil that might look fine. Just got to the part where you discovered the chocolate milk after running it. I've got a couple of videos on my channel of some things I fixed after long term water in the crankcase. I drain, flush with charcoal lighter (not running it, just a few pulls on the rope). After that a good run with transmission fluid to get the rest of the moisture out and clean any remaining gunk out. After that, new oil and it's good to go. Living in a flood prone zone, I get a lot of experience fixing flood damage to various things. :/ Nice video. Great deal for $50. Running great, especially considering it's got a Niki carb. ;)

Back in the '70s, all the way up to the '90s, if you ask Briggs and Stratton what the compression is they would tell you that if there's enough compression to blow your thumb off the spark plug hole, it was enough. I never did like that answer.

same watts rating. also I bet there's a 91825GS part in there. it has the brushes and a small circuit
board attached with 4 diodes and I bet a small blue part. this takes 7.5 volts a.c. off the stator and
turns it to d.c. JUST b4 it goes to the brushes.

Yep, should have lapped the valves while the head was off - would have only taken a few minutes. Also, at one time I had constructed a paint curing oven for my spray painting. Just a wooden box with a couple of regular light bulbs for heat (in porcelain sockets) aka 'Kenner Easy Bake Oven'. Makes the paint quite hard and more resistant to wear/weather.

One thing I like to do is put a drop of torque seal on the rocker arm nuts. I know it is not called for. I guess it is just a habit I got into working aircraft engines. I want to know if there was any change and it reminds me the job is done. The same for any other bolts or nuts where I used the torque wrench.

    • @jcondon1

Great video, well done in purchasing a valve spring compressor. Love all your video's, I am a recent follower and am hooked. Hope you are not offended but on Mustie1's channel he uses "Gunk" or the like in his cleaning machine. He seems a bit of a carburettor expert like yourself. He seems to have great success with that. I don't know what the figures are for carb cleaning but it seems that most of the machines you bring back to life they have a carb fault. Again no offence meant, please keep the video's coming....

I'm pretty good on the engine side but not with the genny part. I would appreciate it if you could watch it and if I do anything wrong. maybe you could let me know. Just bought one of those volt meters you use on yours. You do great work with generators. Love watching you work. Thank you in advance.

Sure, send me the link when you have the video uploaded. I will watch. I was working on a Powermate with a Subaru yesterday and it ran too fast for a second at startup. Mads me nervous for a second. Assuming you get it up and running properly, check if yours has a heat shield between the exhaust and the generator head. If not, you should add one. I get a log of Powermate/Subaru's with burned up generator heads because they did not add a heat shield for some reason.

Nice video. I notice that when you were reassembling the exhaust valve there was a scorch mark on the body under the spring. Is this common or was it an indication that the exhaust valve was not seating completely?

I hate those rubber gas tank bushings! A while back I was doing a test run on my old Homelite 4400 generator, and as soon as I started it, gas began dripping right onto the back of the generator head from the dried out bushing. Luckily I noticed it right away and shut it down. Got a new bushing and valve from Amazon, and it's back up and running.
That Troy-Bilt looks like it has the same engine and generator as my Briggs Wheelhouse 5550. I wonder how many models they used those parts in?

It is the same engine and power head as the Generac Wheelhouse (and many other brands). I like plastic tanks, but that bushing is a real fire hazard. Surprised manufacturers are allowed to do that.

That is what the previous owner did wrong. You have to leave it on the healing bench for it to get fixed. If you put it in a box all hope is lost.

The carburetor spring is still a mystery to me, i see it’s functionality and how it works but I find some New OEM carbs will come with the spring, some of the same part number will show up without it. I even have taken apart new units that should have a spring but yet they do not.

    • @jcondon1
      @jcondon1  4 года назад

Interesting. Several times the spring has been missing and I left it and it ran fine. All my stuff is used and abused so never sure if it is missing or was just not included when new.
