There are no Ukrainian soldiers there, It is the Azov bataljon. jesus, so many here that have no idea what is going on in Mariepol. Do you only watch one source of news? Azov is a bataljon financed by the opposition of Zelenski, the far righ party and the Nazi party. Zelensky even tried to disarm them in 2015 but because the Azov was fighting Russia in Crimea he let them do their thing.

The one which the US copied from the Wehrmacht in which every NCO has more autonomy and authority to make tactical decisions that differ from the orders they received by figuring out a better plan judging from the real time battlefield conditions in front of them.
The US officers don’t have to wait for a general to tell them exactly what to do and when to do it then wait for further orders. That’s too slow and inefficient, it’s better to give an objective and then allow the officers on the ground to take that objective as they see fit and keep moving forward if they see a chance to exploit an opening or weak point, they don’t wait to ask a General what to do because the soldier on the ground has better situational awareness of the tactical situation and thus can make more informed decisions than a General who is several dozen of kilometers away.

I don't think the Spartans used children as shields. The children in that steel plant are not there because they choose to be. They are there because their parents are not allowing them to leave. That steel plant defeated multiple Russian bunker busting bombs. Those bunkers there were literally designed for direct nuclear strike...it is obviously a "steel plant". Marine Lieutenant Vadim Bondarenko describes how his fellow Ukrainian soldiers killed 8 or 9 Mariupol civilians while holding defensive positions.
He assumes the civilians were out looking for provisions because he understood people were running out of food when it happened.
Warning shots were first fired into the air and if they were ignored the people would be shot. The shooters were behind cover so the civilians likely didn't see them beforehand.
When he asked why they were shooting civilians he was told it was because they could have been doing reconnaissance or they could be Russian forces in disguise.
He says that when he asked "why" pointing out they couldn't know they were spies or Ru he didn't receive an answer.
When the interviewer asked him why he thought things like this were happening he says it is probably because junior officers can't do anything and the senior command doesn't care.

I have no clue if the solider in the video was in the battalion or not, but Azovstal quite literally means “Azov steel” since stal is steel in Ukrainian. Just like Kentucky Fried Chicken or Texas Instruments.

The Azov battalion was incorporated into the military in 2018, so most of the extremist elements were weeded out. Ethnic Russian Ukranians now comprise the majority of the Azov battalion in Mariupol. It's a much different group now than 5 years ago. Much more professional since they got the crazies out, and got under a military command structure.

They live without food and water in catacombs for two months. they would love to negotiate their way out of there, but Putin is not negotiating. If they surrender they will be killed. They are the Azov batallion, all Russians want is to skin them alive. They cannot even get their injured out, they have people with severed limbs who cannot move. They preffer to die fighting. They made a conscious decision to keep those planes occupied to keep them from bombing Germany. Every GOOD soldier or sailor fights like they're the only thing preventing defeat.
