The Trick to Walking on Stilts / Mr. Denjiro's Happy Energy!

DENJIRO: So today, we’re going to talk about “stilts.” Stilts have existed for a long time for kids to play with and are still used in some schools today. Let’s use science to help you master them before the summer ends. Let me show you first.
BOY: Wow, you’re very good!
DENJIRO: Once you know the little trick, anyone can ride them like me. The key point lies in “the center of the body mass” and the “fulcrum” where the stick touches the ground. Almost everyone who cannot ride them, places their body weight toward the back, so the center of the body mass and fulcrum become unaligned, making it unstable. The trick is to keep taking small steps. By doing so, keep the fulcrum directly under the center of your body mass, and you’ll be able to ride them fairly easily. Let’s make things a little harder and try these. Three sticks are connected to form a triangle. These are often called “Yattoko” in Japanese. This triangular shape is not only easy to make, but also very strong and hard to break. But unlike stilts, these are connected, so it’s a bit harder to take little steps. But there is a way to keep your balance. Let me show you.

DENJIRO: The same principle mentioned earlier applies here too. By constantly making small jumps, you can adjust the fulcrum to keep it directly under the center of your body mass, and this way, you won’t fall. Once you understand the relationship between the center of your body mass and the fulcrum, you’ll master the stilts in no time!
