Retinal Detachment - 1 Year Later (Scleral Buckle Surgery)

- I can not believe it's been a year since I had my retina detach. The process of gaining vision back has been very slow but I wanted to update on the various check ups I have had since having scleral buckle surgery in January of 2023.
Throughout the process I've had a patch of fluid settled into my central vision which distorted by vision. As time has passed this fluid has slowly dissolved. In this video, I chat about getting a new prescription after surgery, wearing contacts, and how my vision is now.
If you have any questions please let me know!
I had my surgery 2 days ago and it’s been very tough trying to adapt to this new lifestyle as i’m recovering. Thank you for making these two videos explaining your experience. It has helped a lot knowing other people have gone through the same thing I’m going through.
Hope you're doing better. I'm 5 months in after my 2 detachment surgeries
@@AZTLANSOLDIER13 how are you know? my wife is going to do this surgery this week...
I had this surgery 5 years ago,it was the worse experience of my life.the recovery wasnt just a few weeks at all.then i had a gas bubble put it because the buckle was unsuccessful,i pray for anyone going through this.I still cant see much out my right eye just figures but thankfully i have good vision in my left
Thank you very much for sharing, just had my buckle sugery yesterday. I feel much better after seeing both of your videos.
Hi Lauren,
I had a parallel experience. My biggest complaint was that the surgeon was only concerned about the retina staying attached. I had 3 surgeries, the last one 15 months ago and it was a scleral buckle. I had 20/25 prior to the surgery. For many months it was 20/50, then 20/40 and for the last 3-4 months 20/30 which is better than I hoped, as they thought 20/40 may be the best possible. I also seeked a second opinion because I saw waviness instead of straight lines. While the first surgeon was not concerned (again all he cared about being attached), on the first visit to the second surgeon, he told me that I had a wrinkled tissue under the retina which caused the waviness and no amount of drops would take care of it. I needed a surgery, but compared o the previous ones, this was much simpler and I had great results as 2-3 weeks after the surgery , 90% of the waviness was gone. I wish they would have done the scleral buckle after the first detachment, but they seem to do it in steps (not sure if insurance plays a part in it). I don’t know about you, but I literally have PTSD from all the detachments (3 in one and 2 on the other years ago) and I check my vision way too much, I even have a vision chart in my office!.
I wish you the best!
Thank you for sharing your experience, I had both scleral buckle and vitrectomy surgery on my left eye in the last three weeks. All I see is blurred vision except for very nearby objects, but I hope for the best in the future.
It has been two months and 5 days, I have now started to focus and its a long road, we are all different. Strongs.
I will pray for you 🙏 so everything goes back to where it was. I know what you are going through living hard life because i have -14 , last time when i had -7 was 15 years ago. Yesterday doctor lasered my left eye due to tear in my retina and i have to wait a week to see how its progressing ... he also said that in worst case scenario we would have to do scleral buckle like yours to prevent from detachment. You are such a beautiful young girl who got whole life to live , i wish you all the best and shut out to your boyfriend, he is amazing person who stayed with you during surgery period and took care of you 🙏🙏🙏
I had viterectmy eye surgery 3 days ago. I had a lot of fluid in the back of my eye due to very large optic nerves leaking fluid. Feeling miserable with this gas bubble in my eye. Just want to sleep all the time. Glad your recovery went so well. Much love
I had surgery 3 weeks ago - buckle and viterectomy I think .... and I was sleepy/ low energy for about 2+ weeks.
It got better in a weird way, thus energy being back but seizing very suddenly after a few hours leaving me feeling feverish with weak muscles and shivering, which got slowly better over the last week.
My advice: Follow your body's signal, take the rest, because your body needs it and try to accept that this is what is "required" of you right now, but that it is a phase, and things will get better again and the feeling of being "locked in/ trapped and in a hole" will seize. My fingers are crossed for you.
@@Hippabellita1 thank you for your reply, it’s been almost 2 weeks. I am feeling more like myself, first few days after surgery I was so tired but that was probably the effects of the anastesia. It’s still a weird feeling having the gas bubble in my eye- almost like looking through water is how I would discribe it. The gas bubble is slowly going down because I can see the line coming down. I have been seeing floaters though when I go outside which is really annoying. Unsure if that is common. I am worried my vision will be hazy after the gas bubble goes away. I guess I’ll just have to wait and see. Unfortunately I still have fluid in the back of my eye- about 5% which I’m hopefully will go away on its own, if it doesn’t I will need the same surgery agian to get rid of it.
All the best to you! My husband had a vitrectomy (gas bubble) retinal re- attachment at St Thomas's in London and he has to lie down on his left side for 45 mins per hour and use 3 different eye drops. He has poor vision anyway so at present he has even poorer vision. So he's hoping to get some of his sight back!
@@Crystalquartz964was one of the drops that your husband had to use atropine? It dilates the pupil but it also used to relieve pressure after the surgery. I also had a vitrectomy and gas bubble last April 9. I took the atropine twice per day for eight days after the surgery then was told to stop. It’s been 15 days since I stopped and my pupil is still dilated. I don’t know if I should be worried yet. I haven’t found anyone yet who has used the atropine for an extended time. My next follow up is next week. Thank you.
I am a bit older in my 40s and I am sad to see so many younger than me people have to suffer retinal detachment. I have been living with PVD for three years and it leads sometimes ro retinal detachment. I am with degenerative myopia and my left eye is progressively elongating no matter what. High myopia is often the major reason to develop complications at young age. Eyes just got bigger and bigger due to yhe spectacles correction and with that the posterior is unable to sustaIn the eye shape and the retina gets thinner. Soon or later we all tend to lose the posteriour but this usually happens after age of 65 when one's should not be expected to be that active and to work too much... Anyway what I found helps me out: regular doctor checks, sometimes twice an year; clinics or hospital for er if I feel my retina has started detaching, usually if one's black curtain appears at eyesight or if any sudden anomalies arise; stress out, go out, do as much activities as possible away from the screens; do not abuse your eyes more than 8 hours a day with the breaks 20/20/20; healthy diets, avoid toxic people as much as possible, pray. Cataracts migh develop in future but nowadays technology is advancing extremely fast year by year and they should be able to give people hope for better vision. Hope you are doing well and if you want please share with us more updates in the future how your eyes are healing, thanks for sharing!
Thank you for sharing your experience. I went from being an active 67 year old to a depressed old man! After the first gas bubble surgery was a bust I was back in the surgical center to have the buckle, vitreous fluid removed and silicone oil bubble implanted. That was over 9 weeks ago and although my left eye vision maybe improving it still is double and blurred. I’m going to an optometrist in a few days to see if a corrective lens can help reduce my double vision so that life can lived more fully again. Thank you and God bless you and anyone who is going through this frightening diagnosis.👍🏻
I am 65 and had 3 detachments in the same eye. Do not give up, these things take months and years...be patient, I know exactly how you feel...
How are you doing now? I had my buckle surgery 1 month ago after the gas bubble did not work.
@@mikecoachusa1 I think they should do the buckle in all cases. I'm doing very good. I am 18 months post buckle. My vision was 20/25 before 3 detachments and now miraculously it's 20/30 when they were hoping for 20/40 at best. I went for a second opinion about 9 months ago, and they suggested I do a macular puckering surgery to remove a wrinkle tissue under retina. That caused all my wavyness to go away and improved my vision. The first surgeon never mentioned that option...
@@fcprovc1892 Thank you for that info. I have a 1 month post op appt. tomorrow.
Hi i'm Indian 🇮🇳 I had also a retinal detachment surgery (victractomy) on 15 may 2024 and now im recovering myself , my doctor also gave me a new glasses which is +6.75 ,my left eye filled with silicon oil , hope i get well soon and thank you for sharing your experience, stay safe , thank you 😊
i also have the same surgery on my right eye but im still at 20th day post surgery. it seems like my right eye went down in power? coz its more blurry to wear my glasses than not wearing them. but the sight is very clouded, like there is a film in my eye or something.
@@keypeebardago2what about your vision right now
How is the vision after wearing glasses
I was so happy to see you new video!!!! It’s amazing that bubble almost gone. And maybe right now when he’s gone, these jagged lines will go away. I read reviews that some people have a great improvement even after a year or two years. I saw there is one guy on RUclips - he said that he’s waviness is gone after two years so we have hope. I have the same situation as you - I had surgery on three weeks ago and I also have waviness because my center of vision was involved and I also have a little bubble in the same place as you had. I really love your videos and you encourage me to be happy and be grateful for everything because as you said, it’s great that we can see 🥹🙏🏻 I I love your videos. I enjoy when you making videos about traveling or everyday routine, please make more you are incredible❤️❤️❤️❤️ thank you so much.❤❤❤❤
5 months in for me. Macula off. Still have distortion. Probably permanent
Thank you. I am 3 weeks post surgery. Mine was found extremely early through an opticians appointment and I didn’t have any symptoms so very lucky. Two week check up with my doctor went well. He said I could resume normal activity which included running. I did sort slow jogging 3 sessions last week and only if I felt up to it. This week will keep it easy as waiting for my four week (anlthough eye is much better, I still have stitches) and next check up is 7 weeks due to appointments being busy. All going well. I just want to hear back from you on returning to exercise. Although doctor said it’s ok to run. I’m still cautious.
And worry about doing body weight exercises. Gym work.
Thank for this! I’m going through some issues right now and like you said, information is very scarce.
I’ve just gone through a similar situation here in Costa Rica. The doctors here were extraordinary and were able to save my left eye after a MTB accident. It is a frightening experience. Thank you so much for sharing. My eye is healing well and I know it’s a journey. Very best!!!
Thank you so so so so much for sharing your experience! You are helping so many people and I have learned so much from your experience. It was very helpful to see the chronological OCT images of your eye so we could view the progress. I really wish you continued recovery and it will get better, although it is slow. It will take time as we're dealing with nerve tissue here. 👍❤🙏
I have also this retina detachment surgry my right side eye when I was age 20 💖💖💖 thank you so much to my doctor I'm.so great full 🙇♂️🙇♂️🙇♂️
I had the Scleral buckle surgery 3 years ago at 68 years old. I had 20/20 vision still...so I was very concerned. I also had the silicone oil. The surgery was not painful at all, nor was the recovery...except having to keep my head down for the first 7 days. That sucked. Six months later the oil had to be removed. That was considered somewhat risky...because the inside fof the eyeball needs to be rinsed. Afterwards, retina surgery often causes cataracts...clouding of the lense. I had cataract surgery as a follow up procedure (easy peasy to say the least). Three years later I have 02/20 vision...except I still have some distortion, crystal clear but wavy lines in the repaired eye. Scar tissue on my macula is the reason according to my surgeon. Not sure that will ever be remedied. Glad to have my vision though.
Please give us another update. I've just had a scleral buckle procedure completed, with cryo + SF6 gas bubble. My surgeons were world-class, and the outcome was completely successful. Recovery has been very good, actually faster than anticipated. I cannot thank my doctors enough!
I had scleral buckle surgery at 18 years old, 10 months ago. I'm glad to hear your doing well and I wish you the best for your eye health :)
I'll be having that today and I'm 18 too I'm very scared
@@skrr.ty_4886 it’s definitely scary for sure, but 1 year and 2 months later, my eye is doing phenomenal. Since your 18 your at such an advantage because your detachment and eye will heal a lot quicker than normal. Your first week your eye will hurt a bit especially your first few days if you end up getting the buckle, and from there on out it becomes a lot easier. You got this my man if I can do it so can you!
I am also just 18. After 2 days my surgery is planned. My eyes were 6/6 before detachment. Can u tell me hows ur vision recovery post surgery
@@sachinpalz vision recovery was good, but I did go from a -3.00 to a -4.75 in my right eye post surgery which is normal from what I heard because of the buckle stretching the eye slightly back therefore making the light going into the eye focus farther away from the retina
@@jagfox2457 exactly what my doctor said. So, basically i will have approx -2 power
Thank you making this update!
im 24 as well and had buckle, bubble, and laser done due to how severe the detachment was so im very worried how my recovery is going to be and im glad your recovery has gone well so far
Does you goes blind from retina detached?
@@Zahrasheikhkimasti honestly depends from what I heard you usually don’t but it would happen if you constantly get redetachment
thank you for sharing your story so thoroughly!
I'm going through everything that you are explaining here I'm still trying all the things I can find to see again like I did before
I had a acute PVD in the beginning of April and two weeks later was going in for emergency detachment surgery. The first surgery I had was just fixing the detachment and putting a gas bubble in. Everything looked good until 1 day before I was a month out.
I knew the minute my retina detached again. I went back in the next day and sure enough it was detached and I needed another surgery. I got in 5 days later for the new surgery. This time I got the buckle and oil placed in my eye. The doctor said that he was surprised it was completely detached and I had a lot of scar tissue.
I am now 3 days out and this one is much more painful than my first surgery. My eye and eyelid is extremely swollen, it hurts to move my eye and I feel all of the stitches. I'm extremely depressed and annoyed. To go a whole month after my first surgery and then have it happen again is depressing. I'm 45 and have no family history of detached retina and no real eye issues. I'm super concerned about this happening again in this eye and in my other eye. I was quick to get in to specialists right away. Hopefully things get better and this surgery works. I will have to go back into surgery in a few months to get the oil removed so not excited about that. But hopefully it keeps healing. Thanks for these videos.
I had buckle surgery a year ago. And I'm going for my 2nd redetachment surgery again soon next week. I guess in retina surgery there is 47% chances of redetachment. I hope I heal this time. And I wish you luck too. And I wish for your speedy recovery ❤
Hi how was your last Surgery. Was it painful? @@OnlySumiii
Thanks and merci for this very helpful update on your journey of recovery. All the best to you and looking forward to seeing how it will be inthe future.
I had my surgery at 22. It’s been almost a year since my surgery and since then it has been hard. I had a retinal detachment in my right eye and lattice deterioration in my left die so it took about eight months for me to even be able to drive again, and I was working for myself owning my own business, so that really put stress on me. I’ve always had issues with my eyes since I was born, but never in 1 million years what I think my very first surgery would be something as terrifying as an eye surgery. And just as you stated, my eyes still isn’t back to their original vision, it was at, but it will slowly get there.
Thank You Miss.
Omg! I had retina detachment in both eyes literally last month and underwent 3 total surgeries. June 28th left eye scleral buckle (emergency surgery) , right eye July 8 (scleral buckle - emergency surgery) and back into my left eye again July 16 for vitrectomy with oil! Now healing, my left eye I can see farther without glasses and my right eye my vision is the same before surgery.. I realized my prescription is different and will likely need to change (also I’m 23!)
I'm so glad I saw this. I go in today from my emergency surgery. I completely scared and this makes me feel a bit better. So thank you for postine.
I've put a new comment in as to what happened a month later.
Hi Lauren! Hope you are doing well. I also had my scleral buckle surgery 10 days ago and the vision is still as it was before surgery. I have a dark shadow in the centre of my vision and when my left eye is closed I cannot see and identify things with my operated eye. Today at 10th day I visited my doc again and he said retina is attached and vision will come soon. However I feel scared because I feel that my sight has kind of worsened than what it was before surgery. Did this happen with you too?
Hi mam ,first a ton of thanks to you for sharing.Im from india and we literally had a same eyes😂laser on left ,buckle on right.I had a surgery a month ago which was a scleral buckling, now after one month i still have that jagged vision in right eye as the hole(or bubble)in retina is not fully reattached...
I'm getting frustrated that Im only 23yrs old and had this surgery...You dont know how much relaxed im right now after found ur vedio❤...
Hope we will get our old vision soon😊😊
Kaisi ho aab?? I had total 5 surgeries
Thank you for posting the video…one year out how is your vision? What are you doing for precautionary measures for your other eye? I am 5 days post op scleral buckle and silicone oil. Both of your videos were very helpful.
I'm 8 months passed my retinal detachment and still not seeing correctly. I have distorted vision and a lot of edema still. I had a macular pucker from scar tissue that i had removed 2 months ago and it's gotten a little better but still not where it needs to be. It's super frustrating and scary and I feel hopeless at times
So sorry for you. I'm going through the same thing so I totally understand
Thanks for the documentary. I just had it yesterday. Good to know the ordeal might end. Groan. Sad that I wont come out as pretty as you. :)
Thank you
Hi! I have retina thinking now and I'm starting to feel anxious. 🥺
how long did it take for your eyelid to go back to normal? I was told I would have to wait 3-6 months for the eyelid to fully try to resolve on its own or if it doesn't, its then that I can ptosis surgery to lift the eyelid..
Hello well done and nice video same here l have one subretinal fluid .is there any treatment for this fluid to resorbed or it should resorbed spontiously?
When do all the redness go away? I’m four months post surgery but my eye still have a little redness. It always looks like it’s a little irritated. It doesn’t hurt. I’m seeing ok out of it. There may be fluid still under there. But my concern is that It’s not completely white like it used to be. So how long did it take for your eye to become completely white again?
Can I ask about healing process, was it itching and when redness went away? Mine is itching ❤️❤️❤️❤️ month post surgery
ONG your story is the same as mine this Sunday will be be 11 months since surgery. Do you still have fluid in your eye? I can still see mine often on. I just can’t wait till the eye absorbs all the fluid.
I think I still have a tiny bit left but it's almost all gone! I feel you it seemed to take forever for the fluid to absorb.
@@LaurenBoyneyes it’s very frustrating dealing with this I’m 13 months in and my vision is a little blurry but looks like it’s getting better.. do you still see blurry ?
I had the long acting gas bubble for retinal detatchment 5 months ago,the improvement has slowed down a lot now.l will need cateract surgery in the future,so l want to hold off on getting new specs for now.Pleased for you that you are doing well.
Hope you continue progressing as well! Thanks so much :)
I had it done on last Thursday 5/16)24. I did have the glass bubble also . My opthalmologist says I will have a cataract within a year.
I have lattice degeneration and he lasered all the lattice so not to detach
Hi Lauren..
Just a quick thank you for sharing your story 🙏🏻; and a quick question: Did they use a gas bubble or silicone oil in the vitrectomy/scleral buckle procedure on you? I've had two reattachments fail, the second one was with the buckle; both of these were with gas bubbles..I'm going in on 4/18 for a third vitrectomy but this time he's gonna use the oil. 😳😎
It's unbelievably nerve racking; this came out of nowhere about 6 months ago, and it's just this ongoing process with no real idea as to when I'll get vision back in my eye (incredibly blurry), not to mention how much will be restored.
Thanks so much for posting, I hope to see a reply when you have a moment, and best of luck to you in your recovery. Ben
I didn't have a gas bubble or vitrectomy! I only had the scleral buckle operation which was successful with reattaching my retina! Wishing you the best with your next surgery :)
Hi Lauren, did you have a macula on or macula off detachment? I had a macula off detachment in September 2022 and vision is clear but still very distorted and jagged and interferes with overall vision, it's very depressing. I also have micropsia. I have a secondary epiretinal membrane and doctors won't operate. I hope your vision continues to improve.
I think I'm in the same boat. It really sucks. Especially because I went in to the optometrist with sytems before the it detached and they blew me off. They could have saved my vision
Hi dear I just watched your video it’s very inspiring my sister she did her surgery may 1 for retinal detachment for the right eye 👁️ it’s healing but she worried the size of the eye look smaller do you think it’s gone be normal like you ? Please answer my question she is so nervous
Thanks very much. I had the same thing happen to me quite suddenly also. But how much percentage would you say you got back in your right eye? Me, it's the left that went.
Hi. I had the same surgery as you but I am only 2 weeks post surgery. How long did you sleep on your side? Do you still sleep on your side?
I'm also just over a year out (April of 2023 was my vitrectomy and buckle) and I wanted to thank you for sharing your story. Especially the appreciation of the medical teams and the good fortune of having your vision improve, which hopefully continues. As a final note, I got both lucky and unlucky in that I got a pretty bad cataract in my repaired eye (also the right one and thankful for my left) and had the good fortune of my regular ophthalmologist being a cataract and glaucoma specialist, which I also have. They put my new lens in 8 months after my retinal repair and it's been amazing. I can't see anything close, but I buy $5 reading glasses and only have to wear a contact in my left/good eye to see far. Again, much appreciation for sharing this journey. It's more common than people think!
What do you do to improve your sight? I did my operation before one week.
I had a Scleral buckling done 5 months back, and my eye is still red. How long does it take to fully recover? Also did you face any problems with eye movement because i feel something is obstructing my eye movement.
