  • On 4 July 2012, one of the longest-running mysteries in physics was finally clarified. The ATLAS and CMS collaborations at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider announced that they had produced and observed the elusive Higgs boson. This unstable elementary particle was theorised back in 1964 by 6 scientists - one of them was the particle’s namesake, Peter Higgs.
In this episode, physicist and former Ri Christmas Lecturer, Frank Close, explores the life of Peter Higgs, a Nobel prize-winning scientist and the only person in history to have an existing single particle named after them

Thanks from a physics fan but just a lay person. As an American lawyer, I am far away from this in my career but I have always loved math and physics.

The announcement of the Higgs Particle was the moment I became deeply interested in Physics. None of the explanations of the mass making effect of the Higgs Field rang true for me and I have put a lot of thought into what the Higgs Field really is and how the Universe is made possible by it. I have my own solution which I prefer and use as a crash test dummy against which to evaluate all of the new revelations on Nuclear Physics. So Higgs et al made a very real contribution to my life and enjoyment of Science. I get very excited by everything new in that field.
