    What I cant wrap my head around is the gaping plot hole this movie created when you look back at the original Alien movie. (I re-watched it a day after watching Covenant)
    So, remember when the Nostromo's crew went to investigate the signal in the original movie? When Dallas, Kane and Lambert found the corpse of the Engineer, they said he's been dead a long time - long enough for him to fossilize as if he was growing out of the chair. On taking a closer look - they say he died because something "burst out of his chest". This scene takes place immediately before they stumble on the cache of Alien eggs that were sitting directly under the ship's bridge.
    So if David engineered / created the xenomorphs - how can an ancient Engineer die from a chest burster? Sure, maybe it wasn't a xenomorph chestburster like we saw in Prometheus, but it feels heavily implied in the original movie. Soooo what's going on here? time travel? Or maybe David stopped by LV-426, made a queen lay hundreds of eggs under the Bridge of an Engineer ship that conveniently already had a fossilized Engineer that coincidentally died by chestburster?

    • @PatrickRyan147

    • @DeadByApril182
      @DeadByApril182 7 лет назад +18

      Queens still exist. This isn't re-writing or changing cannon, just expanding on what we have. I actually like the idea that David created the xenos whilst he had years of curiosity... That itself is so creepy! The whole film was uncomfortable with very odd sexual tones. We just have to wait and see how queens come into play now...

    • @bellthebeast7235
      @bellthebeast7235 7 лет назад +35

      The xenomorph has existed long before David created them, he followed the steps to make his own monster based on the teachings and information he gained from the engineers, there is no plot hole because the aliens in covenant are not the same as the ones in the original movie

  • @BlueMetroids
    @BlueMetroids 7 лет назад +18

    WTF Ridley Scott?! How could David have created the Xenomorph when there were already Xenomorph eggs in the first Alien with a FOSILIZED space jokey/engineer? And in Aliens we find that the eggs are laid by a the queen alien. Is all that being red conned just to accommodate that creator/creation/god/man/etc theme from Prometheus? I can understand if David "rediscovered" the method of creating Xenomorphs but not him being what set it all off. You can't expect anyone at Fox to point out the inconsistencies as they relish continuity problems lol but come on, two of the best films in sci-fi cinema deserve better follow ups. Lord, please!

    • @Quazzi
      @Quazzi 7 лет назад +3

      Well, Alien takes place many years into the future after covenant hence the already established colonies and widespread terraforming which means there has been ample time for events to unfold leading to the creation of a queen (I suspect using Daniels), another engineer ship being hijacked or planted with eggs and for it to end up on LV426 before being discovered.

    • @BlueMetroids
      @BlueMetroids 7 лет назад +4

      +Quazzimodo Productions
      Actually the timeline is Prometheus (2093), and Alien (2122), a 29 year difference. Not enough time for the space jokey/engineer to be fossilized as that would take thousands of years.

    • @Quazzi
      @Quazzi 7 лет назад +2

      They never said he was fossilised, only that he looked it. My guess is that the original film intended the space jockey to be fossilised and to have been there for a long time but because they didn't say for a fact in the first alien that the ship had been there for x amount of years, Ridley had some leeway when coming up with the prologues.

    • @bagsikdangal
      @bagsikdangal 7 лет назад +2

      BlueMetroids The Nostromo crew didn't carbon date the Derelict. Most of their investigation was visual. Even Weyland-Yutani took the Nostromo crews findings as circumstantial. Only Ash was stated to be capable of giving an exact carbon dating of the Derelict since he's a science officer and a synthetic. As for the interior of the Derelict, there was a Xenomorph outbreak. The Xenomorphs are known to excrit a resin when they are building a hive. This would contribute on why the inside of the Derelict looks bio-mechanoid and fossilized. The pilot inside the Derelict might have been covered in this Xeno-resin. That is why the pilot looks fossilized and grafted to his chair. And as for the age of the Derelict, one could say the Derelict could be 2000+ years old since the Engineers themselves are old. But that doesn't mean the Derelict's contents/cargo is also 2000+ years old.

    "Can you imagine how disappointing it would be for you to hear the same thing from your creator?"
    I find this line funny, in retrospect. David says this to him, but basically reasons why he makes the Xenomorphs the same exact way: Because he can. Kind of makes what Walter says about "When one note is off, the whole symphony suffers" a little more fitting.

    unless covenant ends with an engineer ship, full of eggs, flying away to crash on a distant planet, there is still no explanation behind the derelict ship from Alien.

    • @Quazzi

    • @justing7490
      @justing7490 7 лет назад +6

      how could it happen "down the road"? it had an engineer piloting the craft and is only set about 50 years after Prometheus. it took David 10 years to get to the engineer planet and apparently he's the inventor of the facehugger, not the engineers.

    • @darj617
      @darj617 7 лет назад +1

      @justin g 10 year time frame is referenced in relation to the events of Prometheus, not that it took David & Shaw that long to reach Paradise. Once the Covenant crew arrives, David had already been there long enough to create the Protomorph, the eggs, experiment on Shaw etc etc.

    As an Alien fan of 20 something years, I love the revelation that the xenomorphs were created out of David's frustrations with both Man and the Engineers' imperfections. I think that after 40 years of being in media, people have gotten used to the xenomorph as a movie monster, so I like that Covenant added a new disturbing layer to it with this backstory. Now it's not the xenomorph itself that scares me as much as the rationale and process that led to its creation.

    • @Quazzi
      @Quazzi 7 лет назад +16

      Exactly. It's the ultimate weapon created by the technology of Engineers and Humans. A coming together of two flawed species who inadvertently created things (Engineers created the pathogen and humans who in turn created David) that would go on to destroy them. The true monster of this film is ego and the desire to create. "In order to create, you must first destroy."

      It's okay if both of you agree with Ridley, it's your opinion. I would've liked it better if the engineers hadn't created them either. Having David as their creator just makes it seem like they want Michael Fassbender to continue his role as David. If it bombs at the box office then that'll say rather people agree with me.

      But he didn't create them, at least that is my understanding, he was trying to perfect their form, he didn't create them from scratch. They are the result of the goo and human/engineer/animal mix. The question of what the goo is, and where it came from or who created is still unanswered. I recently got into the franchise so I could be missing some info, but that's how I understood it.

    I've not watched alien covenant yet but I'm sure I saw markings of the xenomorphs in Prometheus so how did David create them if images showed up of them on the planet before David even set foot on the planet?Pretty disappointed tbh that humans had such a tie in with the creation of them... I always assumed the engineers found the alien species and dissolved them on a biological level aka the black goo. Still gives a bit of mystery to the xenomorphs that way...

    • @ntz752
      @ntz752 7 лет назад

      Daniel Johnson You see the black goo is capable of creating new life depending on the creature it interacts with,the space engineer that was sacrificed on earth to create life was not a normal one,his existence was of a single purpose,to be the seed for life on earth,if you compare him with the ones from convenant he isnt similar to them.
      the Deacon in the mural is just one of many mutations that the goo creates,It can simply be a symbol of the power of the black goo.
      Plus the deacon isn't a xenomorph,it's something else entirely different,all the creature that get tainted with the black goo become alien-like.

    You know, I feel bad for Ridley Scott because of the lot of you fans, a majority of you don't know what you want, and so many of you are split on Prometheus that he had to compromise his original vision and try to please everyone, and ended up pleasing no one because of you people. Rather than calling him senile or a shit director or whatever, look at all of your own complaints, and be careful what you wish for.

      Chris McRedmond but people whined about aliens, so he gave them to us over the story in Prometheus and answers promised. As for Prometheus, that movie could have been fixed by one thing, replacing the writer, for the writer of that movie, though I forgot his name, has a track record that's pretty terrible. Hire a better or great writer and screen writer, problem solved. As for Covenant, I can't say anything yet, but from the looks of it, sounds better the a majority of the alien films, though maybe not assembly cut 3. So till then, I'll just have to wait until I can state my opinion on the film.

    Ridley Scott has created a new continuity to distance himself from AVP. AVP is still canon in the Predator continuity( Alien Skull in Predator 2). AVP STILL LIVES!! Even in Ridley's new universe, Predators have been introduced through the comics which are considered canon by Fox!

    • @bagsikdangal
      @bagsikdangal 7 лет назад

      Roberto Santiago *Wrong!* SD Perry the writer of *Alien the Weyland-Yutani Report* revealed that 20Th Century Fox currently treats Aliens,Predator and AVP as *seperate franchises!* And her source comes from a guy who works at 20Th Century Fox itself by the name of *Josh Izzo.* And the old comics and novels of Aliens,Predator and AVP are no longer canon since Dark Horse Comics rebooted them with their _Fire and Stone_ comic series. While Fire and Stone maybe considered canon to the movies, Chris Sebela(writer of AVP Fire and Stone) stated he doesn't consider the AVP movies as canon to the comics. So Fire and Stone depicted the Predators meeting the Xenomorphs and Engineers for the first time. And the Alien skull is just an easter egg joke revealed by the special effects guys who worked at Predator 2 to see how movie goers would react. So it means nothing based on the statements of the Predator 2 special effects guys. *So AVP movies are non canon to both Alien movies and Predator movies.* *Get over it!*

  • @Xenosaurian
    @Xenosaurian 6 лет назад +1

    I repeat; David did not create the Xenomorphs, but he merely produced his own variants of these beasts. Noting that Predator 2, AVP, AVPR, Predators, and The Predator (along with multitudes of expanded universe material) contradicts the idea that David created them (especially as all Xenomorphs ultimately has their origin in the black goo pathogen created by the Engineers), and noting further that Peter Weyland's log "Quite Eye" on the home video release of Prometheus states that the company had already detected the distress signal from the crashed Derelict ship on LV-426 before the events of Prometheus/Covenant, as well as the fact that the official novelization for Covenant has David blatantly explaining that he did not create these beasts but the Engineers did, and he merely used the black goo pathogen along with actual pre-existing Ovomorphs (Alien Eggs) crafted and left behind by the Engineers to produce his very own variants of these beasts. Besides, nobody really likes the idea of David creating the entire Xenomorph species anyway. Please, let us all be done with this already! -.-

    David didn't create the Xenomorphs. The novelization for Covenant has David explaining how the Engineers had created and left behind the Xenomorph, with him merely replicating the work of the Engineers. Also, the Peter Weyland log "Quiet Eye" states that the company already detected the distress signal from the Derelict before the events of Prometheus, and the AVP and Predator films show that Xenomorphs has existed for thousands of years (unless you wish to imply time travel technology).

  • @Constatonks
    @Constatonks 7 лет назад

    I think there's more than just the "idle hands" explanation for the reasoning behind the Xenomorph species, that we're all familiar with, being created. I believe that David, in a twisted way, wanted to have Dr. Shaw be a mother to his perfect species. In both films it was fairly clear that David was very much fixated with her and idolized her almost in the same way a child idolizes a mother figure. Despite the fact that he viewed humanity as a deeply flawed species he found something in Shaw that he thought was worth preserving.
    In Prometheus one of the main themes was the relationship between a progenitor and their creations. Shaw was incapable of having children and I believe that David used her DNA to alter the Engineer bio weapon into a form that he both believed would be perfect, by his standards, and would tribute the woman he "loved".
    When you look at the Xenomorph eggs they are actually quite womb-like and if they are made from genetic material from Shaw they could be seen as replicas of her womb; each one always with child and immediately sexually mature enough to lay their own eggs. Even the Xenomorph queens are incredibly fertile, capable of churning out eggs in seeming endless supply. He created the Xenomorphs to be as fertile as possible from an infertile woman.
    If you imagine this theory to be true it actually fits quite well into the themes present in both new and old movies in the Alien universe in an effort to bring them together. The Xenomorphs are David's alteration of the Engineer's bio weapon as well as his tribute to Shaw, the only human he believed to be worth anything, designed to eliminate the flawed human species that created him. It's even possible that he views them as the offspring of himself and Dr. Shaw.

    I like the fact in the Alien mythos Peter Weyland created David. And how many years later his own ancestor Charles Bishop Weylan (not Weyland - that's a screw up from Aliens) had the Bishop model named after him.
    It must be hysterical in the new canon that 'The Company' Weylan/Weyland Yutani want to create the Alien into a weapon and David already did between 2093 and 2104 - the time between Prometheus and Covenant. So technically as David is WY property they would own copyright on the Alien creature.

    If David is the creator of Xenomorphs, then I am going to be terribly, terribly disappointed! I always thought there was something much deeper to the Xenomorphs. Maybe found by Engineers and bred by them as bio-weapons, not created by a FRIGGIN ANDROID!!! And, if that is the case, then what is the deal with all those murals in Prometheus, depicting a Xenomorph and facehuggers?! I thought Scott was keeping in touch with his work, not disregarding facts he presented in his own movies. I honestly hope this is not the case and the Xenomorph is not just an accident resulted from David's experiments. It would be an insult to everything this franchise represents...

    I love how some fans like to ignore the facts just because they don't want to believe them, even when its standing right in their faces.
    AVP is canon because there is something that contradicts what Ridley Scott says that David created the xenomorphs. In the movie Prometheus in the engineer outpost, there were drawings of Xenomorphs and a queen. The outpost has been abondoned for thousands of years, and so we have the evidence there were xenomorphs several thousand years before David. So unless David did some time travel, he did not create the Xenos, he simply created a new less advanced sub-species, it has been confirmed that David's Xenos are different than the main Xenos, saying they are the same is like saying that dogs and wolfs are the same.
    It is more likely that the black goo was made by the engineers by studying the Xeno and that by exposing to living being it creates a new sub species. Remenber the Xenos in alien covenant look and behave differently but the eggs are also different.

  • @stephaniemitchell8509
    @stephaniemitchell8509 7 лет назад

    Here's a question for Ridley: Why do the aliens need to be "created" at all? On that note, why did humans need to be "created"? Why do these movies acre so much, attributing the "who's our creator" question as the one thing that supercedes all else. Really?
    Wouldn't evolution forming various life forms on various planets, with some life being more formidable and terrifying than others, be more interesting? Personally, the notion that we all have creators, and all the creators and creations are humanoid, is insanely... boring.
    Alien is meant to be a horror genre, where the suspense, stalking, dark corners, and mystery are what's intriguing. Horror enthusiasts don't need or want to know the how's or why's, leave that for philosophy and drama.

    Android creating not other androids, robots, someone useful to him, but hungry monsters who would kill him as well is very strange and illogical. Ok, strange could be interesting, but it's not for most people, because that story is more stupid that anything else.

      With the fight with Walter, he was reaching for a knife while asking Walter whether he'll reign in hell or serve in heaven. It cuts back to others escaping, but I think David uses the knife to either stab Walter in the side of his neck again or he just slices and dices him some other way, takes his clothes and then David cuts his own hand off. When Tennessee and Daniels dispose of the 2nd Protomorph and are about to go into Cryosleep, Daniels reminds 'Walter' of her original plan to make a house on Origae-6, and asks him to help her, but he doesn't know what she's talking about, this reveals 'Walter' to be David.

    The biomechanical aspects of Xenomorphs and their apparently high compatibility with humanoid hosts has been extremely suspect since the original movie. Furthermore, I like the fact that these creatures are based on parasitic wasps, which can be found on Earth, adding a realistic and believable element to the entire matter. Lastly, it is just my theory, but I do not think Engineers were as good 'creators' as it may seem; they appear to be dogmatic, religious and overall inflexible. Perhaps a more multi-variant way of thinking that androids exhibit would indeed be superior to both Engineer and Human minds?

      - For Alien fans, the film does not have enough of the mystery or tension of the previous films, and they were given a nonsensical origin that contradicts the previous entries.
      - For Prometheus fans, the promise of the previous film's Engineer plotline was squandered, instead of Shaw meeting the creators she was killed off-screen along with seemingly the last of the Engineer civilisation in order to turn it into an Alien prequel.
      Although I'm not a big supporter of what Prometheus was doing, I would have rather Ridley stuck to his guns instead of compromising his original vision to make a film that doesn't know what it wants to be.

    Okay its time I say it here since people are complaining about how Alien Covenant contradicted the first Alien film. Which is not really the case. If you watch the first Alien film, the crew of the Nostromo only investigated in a visual approach. As much as you guys want to complain, the Nostromo crew did not carbon date the interior of the Derelict ship. They didn't even bring any carbon dating equipment with them whatsoever. All the things that the Nostromo crew stated are based on speculation. Even the company Weyland-Yutani took the Nostromo crews findings as circumstantial. Only Ash is qualified to carbon date the Derelict since he's an artificial person and the Nostromo crews science officer. As for why the interior of the Nostromo looked bio-mechanoid and fossilized, there was a Xenomorph outbreak that occured. Xenomorphs are known to secrit resins when building their hives. The resin possibly fossilized in a short amount of time. This is the reason for the bio-mechanoid and fossilized look of the Derelict's interior. The Space Jockey/Pilot would have been covered in the Xeno-resin which would explain being fused on his chair and looking fossilized since Xenomorphs would establish a hive inside the Derelict. Again! The Nostromo crew did not carbon date the ship. You all can point out the Derelict is 2000+ years old. That doesn't mean the contents/cargo of the Derelict is also 2000 years old. This is like me owning a 35 year old car(Derelict) and I put fruits(Xenomorph eggs) inside it. Then I abandoned the car(Derelict) and left it in a place for 5 years. The car(Derelict) would be 40 years old but the fruits(Xenomorph eggs) are only 5 years old. In conclusion, Ridley Scott pulled off a plot device loophole and Alien Covenant hasn't contradicted the first Alien film. Complain if the sequel Alien Awakening messes up the established canon. But for now, Alien Covenant is part of the Alien canon😎

    Why are Hollywood so obsessed with "reboots", "prequels" and "origin stories" nowadays? Why is everything have to be explained? Why must every single origin story have to be told? Some things are best to let be unknown.

    David did not make the Xenomorphs, he mutated an existing species that we still don't know much about.

    I wish the xenomorph wasn't created.they now don't feel like a alien.better if they just existed that way it's more scary and makes you think what else could be out there, instead the alien universe feels empty.all we know now is the engineers are the only alien race we've discovered.

    Prometheus and Alien Covent are basically fanfic at this point. David created the xenomorph? Get outta here.

    I enjoyed the film but I can't shed away the feeling that we need better sequels for the Alien Saga to be completed.
    Since there's going to be 1 or more films before the timeline of original Alien, we should not hasten to the conclusion.

    Alien Covenant is the philosophical problem or solution of an external force using an original and its replication as replications of each other

    Sir Ridley Scott. Now eventually you do plan to have Engineers on your, on your Engineers movies, right? Hello?

    Why are people struggling to understand something as basic as this? David's motives were pretty clear. Is it that hard for people to simply ponder what they've seen in a film, and perhaps detect blatant metaphors and symbolism? Or am I asking too much? I think maybe it's easier for people to convince themselves that the film just did a bad job at explaining it, or that it didn't even attempt to, and that it was a flawed film because of it.
