    I am surprised there is no mention of the many German settlements in NC. The Scotch Irish are also not mentioned in NC. My family was the outcasts who settled in NC - then to KY, then to KY, then AR...they got land grants for fighting in wars (at least War of 1812). I'm trying to figure out how and why they moved and they seemed to have moved with some other families such as the Clarks and Lacewells and maybe others (based partly on maiden names and censuses of the few states I mentioned). Did entire neighborhoods get incentives to settle more wild areas after most of the natives had left (or in order to chase off the few remaining natives!)?

    • @msheridan4828
      @msheridan4828 3 года назад +2

      All of the soldiers were offered land grants or their widows. I believe it was 160 acres. United States was trying to settle the West. The land west of the Mississippi. They offered the land as an incentive to get people to move that direction with the offer of free land. I've been doing genealogy for quite a while. Decades in fact.

    What a load of nonsense. Its weird that my entire family history traces back into this very region at early dates, and I have ample documentation on all of them, yet none of them were 'aristocrats' and none of them were 'outcasts'. Not suggesting that such groups did not exist, but they were certainly not the majority population of the region. Lee's and Washington's not withstanding, many of the 'elite' families of Virginia and the Carolinas were from much more humble origins - the Jefferson's for example. Family histories clearly show the 'elite' families freely intermarrying with less well off settlers up and down the frontier, even in North Carolina where the families are virtually indistinguishable from those in Virginia, South Carolina and Georgia. Give me the name of an elite family in Virginia and I will find branches that settled early in North Carolina and Georgia.

    King George and his good friend, James Oglethorpe, only used the "debtor plan" to which you refer, as a ruse to satisfy the Royal Governor of South Carolina, who was adamantly resisting having a new colony to his south. The ruse was that Oglethorpe and the King had an intention of making Georgia into a debtors colony, which would serve as a buffer against Spanish Florida. But, this was only a partial truth. It would be a buffer, alright, but it was never intended to be a debtor colony. This was merely a ruse to fool the SC Governor into thinking of Georgia as a riff raff colony whose riff raff residents would be cannon fodder protecting his land barons in the case of a Spanish attack . When in reality, the fares charged on the ships from England to Georgia were prohibitively high for anyone other than the well to do. The layout of Savannah and her early homes of grace and style further prove the fact that Georgia was never intended as a debtors colony. Oglethorpe, who was granted the title of General as a result of his defeating the Floridians when they did attack, stayed for a long time and he saw to it that Georgia was not settled as a poor folk colony. In fact Georgia had less indentured servants than all the other Colonies put together. There were none in the first two multiple ship voyages which provided the original settling population of Savannah . I am not surprised at your total ignorance of truthful knowledge about the Georgia Colony. The South Carolina Governor was fooled into agreeing with a new Colony to his south. He was fooled by a sitting King of England and a brilliant General. What is your excuse? What's your excuse for being so ignorant about how and what Georgia came to be. Shame on you for your obviously simple and stupid regional prejudice. You have no business talking about Advanced Placement American History tests when you have such a failing knowledge about the formation of Georgia. Adequate, legitimate historical sources prove your ignorance beyond the shadow of a doubt. I assume you do know how to research the issues I have outlined to you, so I'll leave that up to you. You might want to check out the University of Georgia Press. By the way, The University of Georgia was the first Land Grant Institution in the new United States of America, having been Founded in 1785 by Abraham Baldwin, a Yale Educator.

    This lacks a lot of context. You totally skipped indentured servitude from Britain, of which many of my ancestors were, you skipped the fact that native americans fought alongside colonists as both independence and loyalist allies, you skipped the intermixing of peoples genetically. All of these things are a huge part of the southern settlement history.

    For those who happened upon this video to learn the history of the Carolinas, this video is complete misinformation. Dig deeper. The reason there are two Carolinas has to do with the group of governors assigned to the territory. It had nothing to do with class warfare. There weren’t enough settlers to have class warfare when the colony was divided. In addition, the “Restoration” refers to the restoring of the monarchy in England … not the restoring of colonization. This video is so wrong that it should be taken down.

      I think you are right that it didn't happen until late in the 1600s, because they had extremely poor and/or 'criminal' class whites from the UK for that and removing them from the UK was like taking the trash out in the minds of some. Some were rebellious types from Scotland angry about England's tyranny...and maybe the same goes for those in northern Ireland (unsure).
      But, I've been reading that there were also native american and white slaves - at least before Africans were imported (some coming from stolen Portuguese or Spanish ships). Some natives helped the Europeans, some tried until some greedy self-righteous a**hole turned on them, some had no intention from the start for anything but war. Apparently, the first Spanish ship wreck in FL resulted in all (but 2) onboard the ship being eaten by cannibals. All native were NOT the same - in the same way not all Europeans or Africans are. I hate seeing people lumped together in an extreme way. History does that often - maybe for the sake of brevity.
