Fun watching the fish bite you puts us right on the rod! Great job man, thanks👍Good job,🎣👏
Thank you for the kind words!
Love seeing the Shimano talica reels taking down bluefin tuna. I love my Shimano talica reels I have a 50, 25, 20, 2 16 2 speed, and 1 12 2 speed.
Definitely a nice quality reel that makes the job much more easier!
Seeing the sequence from the drop, to the slow wind back, to getting bit was extremely informative…. I have a few upcoming trips and this helps tremendously, thanks for posting!
No problem! Hope you have fun and good luck on catching some bluefin!
@Blueskies I am using the sinker rig technique demonstrated in the seminar in the beginning of the video
havent been able to get out in a while been rlly busy but watching this video just gave me that itch! cant wait to get out. great content cant wait for more
Thanks man! Hope u can get out soon!
Your drag is to loose my friend. Your short pumping and winding for zero gain all along he's still taking line. Also when your using the rail try putting your left hand on the reel instead of holding the forgrip. The rod is twisting and turning with the wobble of your reel. In short you're fighting the rod and reel just as much as your fighting the fish. Not very efficient
I had the crew set my drag. Most of the time I wasn't gaining was due to me trying to use my rod as a rail rod when it was not stiff enough to do so. It was my first time fishing with 50lb line so the fish seriously kicked my butt. Excited to go out again since I learned from my mistakes this trip
hooking up and when they gaff it 2 of the best feelings
So true! I was so relieved when they gaffed my fish and I was so happy when I got hooked up
LOL, that's how I feel. The best feeling is when the line starts screaming out and you set the reel in gear -- or whatever the case depending on these new methods, and the second best feeling is after the gaff. The rest is just work, LOL.
Hey derrick when youre board waiting for bait, while they are loading up bait you can fish for halibuit and sand bass by casting near the bait barge. This guy was using a hook up baits for a sandy but hooked a halibuit and it was pulling drag. or dropshot with a 2 oz torpedo with a 4 inch zoom fluke (reccomend the white split tail ones)
Alright ill keep that in mind! I sometimes fish but most of the time I'm too lazy to rig up. I'll try it sometime I want to catch a halibut
Congratulations, that was an awesome fight!
Thank you! It was a very memorable trip
Sick ass video Van. Been missing out on this hot '22 bluefin tuna bite 😭. Glad to see you catch your current PB bluefin. Keep the content coming. Your Long Beach fan base 😏😌🤙🎣🛥🐟
Thank you! I thought I was gonna miss it too then I saw this last minute 2 day the thunderbird posted and I decided why not. Thank you for the constant support I really appreciate it!
What was the weight on that BFT that you caught? Looked like at least 60lb. Seeing you hook up made me Jones for some BFT action even more 🙃😭. Vicious content, keep those lines tight Van. 🤙
@@sifakuahuia8576 I think it was around 50lbs. I weighed it in around 45lbs gut and gilled. I hope to go bluefin fishing one more time this year but you never know if the bluefin want to bite or not lol
Deckhand a little grumpy but knowlegable👍🎣Nice catch! 🎣👏
Great meeting you Derek. Good times.
Likewise! This was such a fun trip!
Good to see you get one on the drop shot. I did a private 2 day a few days before your trip and we had great success with that on the Thunderbird.
Thank you! I saw you on the Friedman Adventures podcast!
Thanks for watching. Congratulations on your PB and great content you put out🤙🏼😳
That’s one salty deckhand jeez
Most of them are.
Nice fish! When the fish is settles down throw your reel into low gear and short pump It in. Saves you a lot of time and energy.
Thank you! I never use low gear for small fish because I personally lost a lot of fish during the initial switch to low gear and there was a guy on the trip that switched to low gear and the hook pulled. I will try it once I get more comfortable with it but that was my first hookup of the trip and I didn't want to lose it
Deck hand needs a good backhand!
BFT trip on the Fury July 20-22 1.5 day lmk if you want to join. Great video
Thanks for the invite! I would love to make it but the drive down to Dana point is a bit much for me. I appreciate the kind words though!
great video!
Thank you Matty
Hell ya!
Nice 1 bro
Thank you sir
That deckhand was hella rude…😆
Nice video bro. When you're ready to do a collab I'm down
Thank you, I'll let you know!
nice fish bro.. good deal...
Thank you!
He let the fish run taking all him line
Great video. Definitely reminded me never to go tuna fishing. That was a lot of work.
Yeah it was so much work, one thing I hate about bluefin fishing is how much time you actually spend looking at them vs getting bit lol
👌👌
Full size toilet nice!
Yeah it was nice! I wish the sink was bigger though
Nice video bro!
Thank you! What a surprise it was to run into you
Nice catch👍😘
Thank you!
I got the same reel you got, so powerful 😂👍
wish we had one of these here in MD. what do these trips normally cost?
About $500
@@DerrickVan 500 for a bluefin, not bad at all.
@@STILLPHENOM yeah, and the experience really makes the trip. The bonds I create with the guys on the boat and the good food to be had. Catching fish is always a bonus on these trips. I had a great 2 days out on the sea
Wow just $500...I can't believe that.
Kristina Moore please show to Grand Pa

How did you rig that sinker? Didnt look like the normal way to set it up almost looked like a dropshot rig
In the video I included the seminar from the crew he talks about the rig I used. I used a ringed circle hook and I toed my main line to the ring and tied another 5ft piece of mono onto the ring and that went to my sinker
@@DerrickVan yeah i typed that question before watching fully hahahha. But after some research thats becoming the hot ticket very quickly for live bait applications for tuna. Gotta try it out myself! Congrats on a great fish man!
@@natebeefy yeah I like it because I like having the weight on the bottom so that when I grab my hook the weight doesn't swing everywhere. The old rubberband rig got bit more on my trip though so I'd say its a new technique worth trying out but I haven't proved it works better yet. In theory it would be better since you can bomb your bait down to the level the captain is marking fish but in practice it doesn't really matter during a slow bite where presentation is everything
@@DerrickVan yeah that makes sense. Might keep one set up handy with this method rigged up just in case!
@@natebeefy yeah man see what the fish like more that day!
Is there such a thing as a not gonna break the bank setup for this type of fishing or is the tackle $$$$ ?
Yeah there are multiple options out there that are cheaper, but it still is pretty expensive in the bigger picture. I suggest buying 2nd hand because you save so much more
@DerrickVan ok...thanks buddy...can you recommend a reel range ?
@xxkasperxx for bait and jigs you can use the torium 20a which costs $250 brand new but you can definitely find cheaper
@DerrickVan is that a full setup?
@@xxkasperxx that is just for the reel by itself. You can find rods out there ranging from $30 to $220.
I caught my pb on a jig and it 12:25 at night and cause a I’m 15 every one was saying how lucky and look the kid got and it I was just laughing But I hate jig fishing cause the wind up
I hate it but when you get bit its so worth it, congratulations man!
How did that rod and reel combo work for you, I have the same setup?
It was nice, I wish the rod was stiffer though
Mr. Van thank you , I live in Denver, so I have one chance to get the tackle situation right before I book the trip.
@@silverbacknubian6366 no problem good luck!
Derrick, what is that reel? is that a loaner? Great crew.
Its a talica 16ii I just bought it last year and this was the first time using it. The crew was amazing!
@@DerrickVan You seemed to struggle with it. I'm surprised you didn't get an HX Raptor? I have one and no wobble. Nice fish too. Tight lines an take care.
@@rumpestillskin4671 I was thinking about the HX but I really wanted a shimano reel to add to my collection. I did struggle a lot on the fish but I just shrugged it off as fishing with 50lb test for the first time. I want to fish with it some more to get a better feel for it but I like it so far
@@DerrickVan Ok, good luck.
Was this Dave's charter???
No this was a open party trip 👍
@@DerrickVan cool, I saw Theresa was on board with you guys.
@@540slinger my charter was a few days before with Theresa. The Thunderbird put up a couple 2 day trips after mine. Derrick did outstanding on the 2 day he was on with his fish🤙🏼
What do you recommend are the best times to be up for the bites
On these tuna trips you really just have to be awake for the whole duration. We saw tuna all night and they didn't want to bite, other days they bit best at night. Its a day by day type of thing so time on the rail is the only way to up your chances off shore
@@DerrickVan thank you for the feedback I will keep that in mind
What was your set you were using ?
I was using a talica 16ii on a Dalai proteus wn rod
do catch and cooks
Alright will do!
@@DerrickVan sweet always like catch and cooks from people I find channels are interesting and have a good vibe
Hi buddy how much does it cost for a trip and how many days
I paid $425 for the trip + $25 for Mexican fishing license. This trip was 2 days
@@DerrickVan That's a pretty good deal!
@@Briguy1027 yeah! I was so surprised when I saw the trip posted and looked at the price
Alyourvideos and we haven’t seenyoucatchanything 1:57
So you can see the 'zone'?...KEEP UR DAMN THUMB OFF THE SPOOL YA TOUREST!!!
Dude the captain is marking fish at depth levels and my line is marked at every 100 feet. In the video during my hookup you can even still hear him on the PA announcing where he is seeing fish. You are supposed to keep your bait in the zone when fishing sinker rig. I caught a fish using that method I'd like to see you get off your keyboard and do the same
@@DerrickVan Yeah, not sure what Q is talking about -- I'd do the same as you with that rig. Nothing wrong with thumbing the spool to keep the depth consistent. What's interesting is you got bit on the retrieve, but hey, fish have minds of their own.
@@Briguy1027 yeah, a guy from island fishing tackle told me to put my reel in low gear and slowly wind my bait up, the guy who got bit before me got bit in the wind up so I was not surprised I got bit. So grateful the bluefin picked me that day haha its just a lottery when the bite is slow
@@DerrickVan Good tip, I'll keep that in mind, I have a July trip. It makes sense to wind in low gear, gives you more time in the fish zone. (LOL, I can already see people complaining to me that you need to keep it in high gear, without understanding the context).
