The more I think about it, the angrier I am that nobody is being held responsible for cleaning that place up. The materials should be salvaged and the land returned to nature. The developers and the buyers knew about the sink holes. We shouldn’t let people develop on unstable lane, screw over buyers, and then the homes are left as trash to rot in a stunning natural area. It’s crazy to resent the vandals squatting in abandoned houses but not resent the people that originally vandalized the land by building on it.
Where can I find that info that they knew? No sane minded person would move into an area with existing sinkholes. If developers knew they were there, then they should know the source of where the water was coming from to cause them. It wouldn't be rain.

No fix for natural, but if it was man made and the water source can or has been stopped, the ground will get solid again over time...,but a long time unfortunately.
I live near here. The disclosure he talks about was down played as the district of Sechelt allowed this subdivision to be built on unstable land that was clearly unstable. Had they done their due diligence and made sure the drainage was built to requirements put forward by the geotechnical survey this subdivision would probably have been ok. They passed substandard materials and workmanship. I know someone who bought at the end of this subdivision. Because of that disclosure they did there own geo survey and it passed so they bought it. They got booted as well because you can’t get to the house. They closed the road. Just to clear up some comments made here are some facts. They were given very little notice to move out. In fact my wife and I went to help people get there belongings and we had to use Atv’s with trailers. Mostly all big ticket items got left behind. Insurance companies cancelled their insurance. Can’t speak to all that bought there but the people I know had a mortgage that still had to be paid. They now rent because they are still paying the mortgage. It’s still in court. Apparently some took a buy out but cannot disclose amount (I guess that’s the wealthy people) Did this negligence by the district of Sechelt,the builders,the company that cut the corners on site drainage hurt anybody. Every last one of them
Thanks for the added info regarding move-out activities. While it's awful to lose one's home this way, at least irreplaceable items could be removed prior to abandonment.

This is going to be an even bigger issue as time goes on, no oversite a lot of the time or there just taking ol fashioned bribes to keep investors coming in... Without even trying there was (/is) at least $250,000 to be obtained. EDIT That's just the central AC/Heat units that are inside the houses. Did anyone notice that Goodman which was shown?
Moral of the story: Before you consider buying property or a home in an area that is newly built in, get a geologist report, check county and township maps for floodplain, etc. There’s often a good reason why nobody built anything there for so long! And if you find out there’s a problem, don’t try to convince yourself “it’ll never happen to me”.
Wouldn't the developer be responsible for the initial build knowing the land was unstable? Of course the home owners have to do their due diligence as well. We had a huge issue here in Nova Scotia after the flooding in the spring, the homes were built on a flood plain so can never be sold for their initial value, they are still standing but insurance won't cover the damage.

Yeah and if the houses are now sinking/sagging it’s probably all not worth much now. The floors and kitchen stuff are probably still salvageable. Windows possibly if not sagging. But yes so much. The longer they wait, the less it useable. The glass balcony railings, I’d take those first!!
Nice to have an update on these homes. So sad the builder knew something would happen and still did the job. Not fair for the homeowners. It’s amazing how quickly nature takes over. Always a great day when you post!
Builder wasn't the one in charge, I'm sure. They almost never are. So often it turns into a "do your job or get out" with concerns ignored by those who could do something about it.
I was thinking the same thing…. You would think they would allow someone to go get for donations at least Homes for Humanity even. I’m sure these properties are tied up in legal issues and will most likely just rot down…. Such a waste.
So sad to see these beautiful homes just trashed and disrespected by the homeless. I'm sure the original homeowners would be sad as a home is most of our biggest asset. I moved from Toronto to Vancouver in 2016, and I've been wanting to go to Sechelt because it looks so magnificently beautiful. I hadn't heard about this subdivision. So sad that the homes were lost, and all that garbage is left in the middle of nature. What an incredible place it would have been to live.
Gorgeous homes in a gorgeous location. I can't imagine losing my home, but these people knew what they were signing up for if it's true what you said. There's no way I would build my dream home in a location that is known to have sinkholes.
At least here in the USA, When all parties agree to a real estate contract, there's little to No Recourse for the buyer. Unless addendum is created. Sounds like the disclose language was complete and this means the builder is free of warranty/responsibility for the sink holes. Be interesting to know the Home Owner Insurance Policy. This catastrophic event Begs people to consult with a Real Estate Attorney and experienced credible surveyors, Prior to signing. Read contracts and create addendums in Your Favor, if needed. WoW what a waste of a sub-division.

The municipality looked the other way so the developer could make profit. Similar thing happened where I'm at, except it was a mudslide area and the houses all slid down the hill. The County knew, but looked the other way.
In Sechelt BC, the the owners did NOT know what they were signing up for at all! The geotechnical company that surveyed the land on behalf of the District of Sechelt (who obtained the area through a land swap) reported that all was well prior to building have ducked all responsibility, as have the District of Sechelt. The District issued permits for the construction to proceed, and charged a pretty penny for doing so - did someone mention corruption here? No insurance companies cover sinkhole or land slip events, leaving all of these home owners to deal with things themselves.
Thanks for the revisit Brent. I remember the first video. I think maybe it would have been safer after everybody moved out to pull the houses down for safety sake. You never know when a house can disappear into a sinkhole and homeless people living in them makes for a life and death situation. Glad you made it out ok without any trouble.

I see a wonderful amount of salvage to be had. Appliances, tubs, vanities, doors, windows on and on. I wonder why it all has been left there without anyone salvaging it?
I remember reading or hearing that no big trucks - like moving trucks - were allowed in because of the instability. That might have something to do with it.
It would cost so much to get it all out and then itd be mismatched and/or not enough when you get out and installed somewhere new. So much easier to buy new

Thank you Brent for taking us back here again. It could be such a beautiful place, but I suppose it can't be cleared and returned to nature because it would be too dangerous for heavy vehicles. Some of these owners managed to restart their lives but may never recover financially. We know of one family who had to move into parents basement suite, AND have to continue making mortgage payments.

It's weird that there are sink holes and ground movement all over but none of the houses show signs of a compromised foundation. I didn't see any cracked walls or buckled flooring. Even the garage doors are still straight and the sliders still seem to work.
I agree with you Mike? Where is the damage to the homes? No water in the basements, nothing. Very odd. If I was homeless in the area... I would relock the doors and make it very nice inside... just saying.

I thought they finally did get to him about 3 or so weeks later? It must've been another one, but you don't hear about people disappearing everyday. I do recall a 48 Hours or 60 Minutes did a feature dedicated to sink holes in Florida with that specific story, but obviously I'm incorrect he was finally recovered. They also didn't go into much detail about how sink holes happen. I suppose I could go Google it, but time gets away from you, ya know?

Hello Brent, I saw your first video on this subdivision, at that time I felt very sorry for everyone loosing their homes. However, if what you say is true, and these homeowners signed some sort of acknowledgment to show they knew sinkholes existed in the area, then I don’t feel as bad because they took the risk.

I can imagine waking each morning with that fantastic view and topped with the sun streaming in. Just wow get to leave so much behind all needed at another home sofas kitchen appliances furniture sad to think of the people moving on. The water looks like soil erosion is leeching out from the shore line . Dreams of what it could have been. Yes safe to keep away from drug addicts to be beaten for money or worse in a place no one would search to look for you , safety has to be upper most in your mind if out alone. This may sound like an odd juxtaposition, but I just wanted tho thank two Canadians for reminding me that all that glitters is not gold. Between you and Mike Holmes looking behind the walls and luxury finishes, and beyond the spectacular views, I have come to truly understand what is meant by Buyer Beware. Hard enough to find a home inspector worth their salt, but now I have to find a geologist as well? Sigh. As others have pointed out, this development should never have been allowed to proceed. In the last video there was a home that still had a boat in the garage! I’d be shocked if it was still there. Looks like homes have been looted of their materials and appliances since the last video. Thanks for the documentation.

Your description said the region was told to stop abusing emergency orders, but they continued to do so. Have the homeowners managed to get any kind of settlement from them or the builder?

I realize doing proper land surveys can be expensive, especially if you need hire a geologist specialist to special equipment (ground penetrating rador, etc.). But for a neighborhood like that, it should become more common to do so (hiring geologists, etc. before deciding to build). Whereas in other areas, when I see problems occur, it is just inevitable (like building mansions on steep cliffs in California) or near water (especially in Florida)
Sink holes were likely caused by not properly de-rooting the trees and backfilling with fill dirt. Also not enough drainage. Over time roots shrivel and leave cavities the rotting plant material can turn the water acidic and eat away at limestone. They said they cleared the land of trees I’m positive they just cut the trees and didn’t properly prepare the site and provide good drainage.
It's a shame these people lost their homes, but he said at the beginning that supposedly they signed papers stating they were aware of the problem. It's insane they were permitted to even build this subdivision. But it has happened in the U.S. too. There are neighborhoods with beautiful mountain views that are sliding down hillsides, 2 and 3 million dollar homes and the whole back of the house and the backyard are gone.
At the end of the day, its a shame that they didn't make it a legality to remove as many parts of the homes as possible, even by hand, so wildlife could move back into the area. :/ So much of the wood, floors, railings, etc, could have been repurposed, as they're so new.
Agree, there is so much materials just wasting away for nothing. I think maybe because the lawsuits are ongoing, nothing can be touched by the owners but in the meantime, the homeless etc are taking over the houses which must be devastating for the owners to see.
No cracked windows or drywall. Doors operational. Those houses are not sinking. The road clearly is, but I think there may be been a bit of an over reaction to force everyone to abandon. The builder may just have built the road without the proper base and drainage.
Seawatch has set a precedent now for engineers, today if you want to build a house you have to be on bed rock or hard pan. The foundation requirements for new houses have increased significantly you want to build today its gonna cost you extra money but you know your house isn't going anywhere. Sad to see all this, people took a chance, the dirt pimps at the time were pushing the shores area pretty hard at that time. It would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to demo those houses every single pound would have to be shipped off coast. Each house would have to be stripped by hand of all the drywall, to dispose of drywall is hundreds of dollars per ton. Each house is easy twenty 40 yard bin loads of mixed debris at 3000-4000 a bin. Most of those houses a house moving company like Nickel Bros couldn't move. Get excavators and trucks romping around in there shaking up the ground who knows what would happen. I don't think any local contractors would want to go near the place it would be one big liability. The people responsible for this mess are playing the blame game pointing fingers. Should have never happened, the greed for money over rode common sense.

Yeah and if the houses are now sinking/sagging it’s probably all not worth much now. The floors and kitchen stuff are probably still salvageable. Windows possibly if not sagging. But yes so much. The longer they wait, the less it useable. The glass balcony railings, I’d take those first!!
Nice to have an update on these homes. So sad the builder knew something would happen and still did the job. Not fair for the homeowners. It’s amazing how quickly nature takes over. Always a great day when you post!

Builder wasn't the one in charge, I'm sure. They almost never are. So often it turns into a "do your job or get out" with concerns ignored by those who could do something about it.

The government should had bar construction of the subdivision instead of letting buyers get hosed.
The local district knew all about it and still gave the ok to the developers.
It is sinful that doors, fixtures, wood floors, railings, etc. have not been removed to be reused.
I was thinking the same thing…. You would think they would allow someone to go get for donations at least Homes for Humanity even. I’m sure these properties are tied up in legal issues and will most likely just rot down…. Such a waste.

I moved from Toronto to Vancouver in 2016, and I've been wanting to go to Sechelt because it looks so magnificently beautiful. I hadn't heard about this subdivision. So sad that the homes were lost, and all that garbage is left in the middle of nature. What an incredible place it would have been to live.
Gorgeous homes in a gorgeous location. I can't imagine losing my home, but these people knew what they were signing up for if it's true what you said. There's no way I would build my dream home in a location that is known to have sinkholes.
At least here in the USA, When all parties agree to a real estate contract, there's little to No Recourse for the buyer. Unless addendum is created. Sounds like the disclose language was complete and this means the builder is free of warranty/responsibility for the sink holes. Be interesting to know the Home Owner Insurance Policy.
This catastrophic event Begs people to consult with a Real Estate Attorney and experienced credible surveyors, Prior to signing. Read contracts and create addendums in Your Favor, if needed. WoW what a waste of a sub-division.
@@GS-zc4sk There should have been a geotech study done as part of the permit process, that would have prevented the development from happening. The municipality looked the other way so the developer could make profit. Similar thing happened where I'm at, except it was a mudslide area and the houses all slid down the hill. The County knew, but looked the other way.
In Sechelt BC, the the owners did NOT know what they were signing up for at all! The geotechnical company that surveyed the land on behalf of the District of Sechelt (who obtained the area through a land swap) reported that all was well prior to building have ducked all responsibility, as have the District of Sechelt. The District issued permits for the construction to proceed, and charged a pretty penny for doing so - did someone mention corruption here? No insurance companies cover sinkhole or land slip events, leaving all of these home owners to deal with things themselves.
Thanks for the revisit Brent. I remember the first video. I think maybe it would have been safer after everybody moved out to pull the houses down for safety sake. You never know when a house can disappear into a sinkhole and homeless people living in them makes for a life and death situation. Glad you made it out ok without any trouble.

Some of these owners managed to restart their lives but may never recover financially. We know of one family who had to move into parents basement suite, AND have to continue making mortgage payments.
This place has been thoroughly gone through and trashed since the last visit video. Almost glad someone’s making use of some of kitchen cabinets etc. as to not let everything go completely to waste/ruin. Thanks for the revisit,Brent. 👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻

I think I'd get a rainwater catch and generator and live with the sinkholes... The view is worth the hassle and danger. What a beautiful area--B.C. is so stunningly gorgeous.
Aside from the sinkholes these homes are beautiful and it’s unfortunate this is happening to them.
It's weird that there are sink holes and ground movement all over but none of the houses show signs of a compromised foundation. I didn't see any cracked walls or buckled flooring. Even the garage doors are still straight and the sliders still seem to work.
Does anyone know the cause of the sink holes in this area?

I do recall a 48 Hours or 60 Minutes did a feature dedicated to sink holes in Florida with that specific story, but obviously I'm incorrect he was finally recovered.
They also didn't go into much detail about how sink holes happen.
I suppose I could go Google it, but time gets away from you, ya know?

After living in Vancouver since the early 90’s all I keep thinking is how enormous the houses are. So devastating.
It is so insane for people to just go in and destroy things like smashing the windows and glass in the bathrooms. And if a roof is not intact, the building will soon be toast. Shame on those developers!

Hello Brent, I saw your first video on this subdivision, at that time I felt very sorry for everyone loosing their homes. However, if what you say is true, and these homeowners signed some sort of acknowledgment to show they knew sinkholes existed in the area, then I don’t feel as bad because they took the risk.
Did anyone else feel a sense of sadness watching this, thinking how quickly Mother Nature can erase all traces of mankind's existence when the last ones die?

I can imagine waking each morning with that fantastic view and topped with the sun streaming in. Just wow get to leave so much behind all needed at another home sofas kitchen appliances furniture sad to think of the people moving on. The water looks like soil erosion is leeching out from the shore line . Dreams of what it could have been.
Yes safe to keep away from drug addicts to be beaten for money or worse in a place no one would search to look for you , safety has to be upper most in your mind if out alone. I truly love your explores but think a good friend supporting you would be a good idea. This may sound like an odd juxtaposition, but I just wanted tho thank two Canadians for reminding me that all that glitters is not gold. Between you and Mike Holmes looking behind the walls and luxury finishes, and beyond the spectacular views, I have come to truly understand what is meant by Buyer Beware. Hard enough to find a home inspector worth their salt, but now I have to find a geologist as well? Sigh. As others have pointed out, this development should never have been allowed to proceed. These developers don't care about the land they clear cut. They just think about profit.
Gorgeous views and I don't understand why these houses wasn't salvaged there are tons of things that can be salvaged out of these homes and then tear them down and let mother nature have her land back...so sad.

So sad to see the place continue to deteriorate. It's such a beautiful area and would have been an awesome place to live. Do you know what the current legal status of the place is? Your description said the region was told to stop abusing emergency orders, but they continued to do so. Have the homeowners managed to get any kind of settlement from them or the builder?

I realize doing proper land surveys can be expensive, especially if you need hire a geologist specialist to special equipment (ground penetrating rador, etc.). But for a neighborhood like that, it should become more common to do so (hiring geologists, etc. before deciding to build). Whereas in other areas, when I see problems occur, it is just inevitable (like building mansions on steep cliffs in California) or near water (especially in Florida)
Sink holes were likely caused by not properly de-rooting the trees and backfilling with fill dirt. Also not enough drainage. Over time roots shrivel and leave cavities the rotting plant material can turn the water acidic and eat away at limestone. They said they cleared the land of trees I’m positive they just cut the trees and didn’t properly prepare the site and provide good drainage.

It's a shame these people lost their homes, but he said at the beginning that supposedly they signed papers stating they were aware of the problem. It's insane they were permitted to even build this subdivision. But it has happened in the U.S. too. There are neighborhoods with beautiful mountain views that are sliding down hillsides, 2 and 3 million dollar homes and the whole back of the house and the backyard are gone.

At the end of the day, its a shame that they didn't make it a legality to remove as many parts of the homes as possible, even by hand, so wildlife could move back into the area. :/ So much of the wood, floors, railings, etc, could have been repurposed, as they're so new.
Agree, there is so much materials just wasting away for nothing. I think maybe because the lawsuits are ongoing, nothing can be touched by the owners but in the meantime, the homeless etc are taking over the houses which must be devastating for the owners to see.
Probably a few divorces over this.

No cracked windows or drywall. Doors operational. Those houses are not sinking. The road clearly is, but I think there may be been a bit of an over reaction to force everyone to abandon. The builder may just have built the road without the proper base and drainage.

Seawatch has set a precedent now for engineers, today if you want to build a house you have to be on bed rock or hard pan. The foundation requirements for new houses have increased significantly you want to build today its gonna cost you extra money but you know your house isn't going anywhere. Sad to see all this, people took a chance, the dirt pimps at the time were pushing the shores area pretty hard at that time. It would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to demo those houses every single pound would have to be shipped off coast. Each house would have to be stripped by hand of all the drywall, to dispose of drywall is hundreds of dollars per ton. Each house is easy twenty 40 yard bin loads of mixed debris at 3000-4000 a bin. Most of those houses a house moving company like Nickel Bros couldn't move. Get excavators and trucks romping around in there shaking up the ground who knows what would happen. I don't think any local contractors would want to go near the place it would be one big liability. The people responsible for this mess are playing the blame game pointing fingers. Should have never happened, the greed for money over rode common sense.
Might have to do a controlled burn. I’m not sure how they would demolish these homes
