Since I started college in 2002, I have been making music like this. I predicted that one day, the public would be ready for this sound again. Although, I never thought it would take 12 YEARS but hey, better late than never.
Fans of this genre might want to go check the kickstarter for "Rise of the Synths," a documentary about synth wave artists including Lazerhawk. There are not a lot of backers with 2 weeks left in the campaign. Kind of surprised that I haven't seen this discussed much in the comments for for all the amazing tunes and albums on YT. I'm not at all affiliated with this, but I really want to see it get made.
Bluelight Spike Have you listened to the Redline album? That was the first one that got me into this style. I was hooked right away (the 3rd track "Electric Groove" is when I knew....)
Synthwave is the more popular name, but retrowave is more descriptive and appropriate. Just dont call it new retrowave because there was never any retrowave in the past so it cant be new.
This is the closest there is to a modern day Opera. Acoustic story telling for those of use who grew up electronic music and cyberpunk dystopia. It's all there, the hero, the antagonist, the conflict, the shoot out. Look for it
I just realized that "Shoulder of Orion" has the exact same melody as the mid-80's cartoon "Pole Position" but slightly slowed down. It's not a sample or anything, though it's clearly an homage. That's super cool.
These laments do not unfold like in a picture book full of stars, where birds come spinning, turn farandoles, cracking rattles and dancing wizards and we can regret it 🤔

Visitors, track 2, is great. a 5/4 melody on top of a 4/4 beat. It only lines up every 20 measures. So awesome.
The beat is really just a bass and snare so it could just as easily be considered a 2/4 beat, in which case in lines up every other bar.
