- Our dipper gourd is the closest relative to the first and oldest gourd of them all, the bottle gourd. Dating back 12 to 13,000 years, it boasts the longest history of cultivated species known to mankind. Even the Sunflower, who showed up 6,000 years ago, beating beans and corn, cannot compare!

When I was a kid, half a century ago, everybody had gourds! Bird's nests, water dippers, etc. Times change. I'm a avid gardener and I've never even grown them. Thanks for the nostalgia trip Nina!

My dad was an avid gourd grower. He'd dry them and use them for a whole host of different things around the house, decorating being the most common. Thank you again, Nina for a great video. You rock. My granddaughter Ezra, now 2, LOVES tomatoes!! She'd eat the cherry tomatoes as fast as we would pick them and bring them in!! WOW!! That huge plant sort of made it's own "fort" to play in... lol!!

I just put three marigolds in a planter right outside our front door about 5 weeks ago. Its still fair (average 68) so they're blooming, but I have noticed it doubled in size in just those five weeks.
