  • On this week's show, we try something completely different and attempt to make a stained glass ornament. Mrs Kenny joins me on this one and although we've never done this before, we thought you might like to go along for the ride. I hope you enjoy the show.

      Mrs Kenny and I have a lot of fun when we work on projects together. She's getting more comfortable in front of the camera so I am sure you will be seeing more of her on the show. Thanks for tuning in Troy and for the encouraging words.

    A terrific Alternative Tuesday show. You and your wife did a great job introducing us all to something new and very creative. I think you both should be very proud of your initial outcomes and I think we all anticipate future endeavors with stained glass. I think that clearer glass would perhaps give you the distinct color separation you were both seeking. The clear glass permits greater light refraction and transmission. Think of all the stained glass windows you have seen in your life. . . .most were clear(er) glass. Regardless, you both did a terrific job.

      I totally agree on the clear glass and wish that the glass I had wasn't so opaque but while I am learning, it works just fine for me. I am sure that will be using some more transparent glass for future projects. Thanks for tuning in and for chiming in with your suggestions.

      It is definitely a lot more challenging that I thought it was going to be Paul but at the same time, they turned out better than I thought they would. A fun project. Looking forward to seeing your version if you should try it. Thanks for tuning in sir.

    The ornaments came out great Ken,
    I always wanted to learn Stained Glass, I do know someone who used to work hot glass and Stained glass, I do know with Stained Glass to get different textures you turn the piece around to get the look you want, like in woodworking Intasiga (sorry for the miss spelling) with my accent my phone has problems lol

    For a first time attempt these pieces turned out fantastic, and as you say with more practice the results will be even better 👍
    I'm wondering if a miniature gas blowtorch would be better for soldering, you could lay bits of solder on the joints and then run the torch over to let it flow 🤔

    • @acutabove_woodworkings
      @acutabove_woodworkings  2 месяца назад

      I'm not sure about the torch Barry. You have to be careful not to overheat the copper foil tape and I'm not sure if the torch would be better for that or worse. Only one way to find out. I guess I have to buy a mini torch now. LOL. Thanks for tuning in and for chiming in with your thoughts.

    Hey Ken! Back story here... I was at an estate sale a few years ago and I ran across and bought an arched top antique window. Many of the 12 panes were broken but were just plain glass. This window is about three ft wide and 5.5 ft tall. My thought was to turn it into a stain glass window, so I decided to take a class just for this project. 12 lessons later I have 6 panes finished. I understand discouragement. It's an art for sure. I put it away for a while but bring it back out from time to time. I've compared the earliest to the last that I've done and see definite improvement. Question is... do i go back and re-do the early ones, or just let it fly.
    So... the moral of the story is... stick with it! Along with disappointment comes determination and eventually gratification!
    One more moral to MY story... start with a Christmas tree... not a giant window.
    To Kenny... and Mrs. Kenny. Thank you!

      That's a great story Dennis. I personally would leave the older ones. It makes the window a tale of your stained glass journey. I'd love to see pictures of that window sometime. Thanks for tuning in this week.

    Interesting. Might have to try. Could you have drilled a small hole at the point of the tree? Use that hole as a tie point.

    • @acutabove_woodworkings
      @acutabove_woodworkings  2 месяца назад

      You could have drilled a hole Roger with a diamond bit. I have plenty of them so that will definitely be something that I consider in the future pieces. Thanks for tuning in and for chiming in with your suggestion.

    They both look good. I’m watching the soldering part, do you think a blade tip would be better, since you could use then flat part to smooth off the final smoothing and then the point of the blade allows for the spot soldering. Thanks for this video. This is an easy can’t get into, and not hugely expensive to get started in. Thanks.

    • @acutabove_woodworkings
      @acutabove_woodworkings  2 месяца назад

      The tip that I used was a wide chisel tip because I had the same idea as you, to use the flat part of the chisel tip for smooth application of the solder. It seems to have a mind all its own though. LOL. Thanks for tuning in Scott and for the suggestion

    Word to the wise, cut your pieces right up to the line, it just takes a little practice. Kenny you did waaayyyy too much grinding. Grinder bits are expensive. I saw an episode of This Old House about 6 years ago where the home owner helped a glass artist make a simple panel for her home. I thought that it looked interesting so I tried it and I liked it, for a while. Made many different items. Wood has always been my passion so that's what gets my attention. I like the variety of the projects you do here Kenny.

    • @acutabove_woodworkings
      @acutabove_woodworkings  2 месяца назад

      I completely agree with the amount of grinding done on these projects and as we get better with the glass cutting, the grinding will get less and less. Thanks for tuning in to the show and for chiming in with your story and with your advice on making successful projects with the least amount of wear on your equipment. It's appreciated.

    @acutabove_woodworkings I think it's awesome you included your wife! I wish my husband would join me...
    As always thanks for the lesson. If you are getting into stained glass...you should know there's an acid wash paste you can use with stencils to etch the glass permanently. You can get it in craft stores or order it online.
    You said dollar store...are you Canadian like me?

      I have used glass etching paste and it works well. For years, my wife and I would etch drinking glasses and customize them for friends and family. I might even have a show episode demonstrating how to use it to create etched glass. That's a great suggestion as I don't think I would have thought about etching the glass to incorporate that as another element of stained glass. Thanks for the suggestion. As for being Canadian.......I certainly am. Thanks for tuning in and for taking the time to leave your comment and to give your suggestion. It's very much appreciated.
