Howdy Hey! I'm off moving this week but here's a pre-filmed video from my backlog! Also I'm testing out a new "Products" feature for RUclips so check out that "view products" button in the bottom left of the video!
Hi Hipyo! Could you do a video modding and/or reviewing the onn. rgb gaming keyboard? I have the keyboard and it's my main. I would love to hear your opinion on it!
My gripe with the whole clone/authentic debate honestly comes down to availability. If GMK Olivias were readily available, you bet your ass I'll get them. But if I had to pick between paying 300+ msrp for a set because I missed out on a GB from a few years ago, yeah, sorry. I'm just going to go with the clones. A lot of the clones don't have the novelties so it just becomes a colourway. Just my opinion ofc and I'm sure people are very heated about authenticity vs clones and supporting the original creators, but if there's a demand and there's no supply, something's gotta give.
If you're buying 2nd hand you're not supporting the creator anyway, if it's out of stock it makes no difference to the creator if you buy a genuine 2nd hand or a clone, they won't see the money. I agree that you shouldn't steal novelties, but you can't "own" a colour combo.
Yes I just bought Olivia clones myself as I wanted the color scheme and nice thick ABS double shots. I'm not going to feel guilty because I don't want to wait for another GMK set with similar colors and qualities...
Kinetic's Corn keycap set is certainly not for everyone, but please be sure to let everyone know about them as sometimes you'll mention them to a friend and she yells, "I LOVE CORN" and buys the keycap/deskmat set and loves you forever for letting her know they exist.
The first time it came up I literally thought it was an easter egg or something, slowed down the video playback to 0.25 only to find out it was just a mirrored text, def not cool.

What's available and affordable in the USA to someone who makes US citizen money is not going to be the same as it is for someone like me who lives in the Philippines and makes Filipino citizen money (it's a lot less). If only cloning companies commission the original artist. That would fix the whole debate. Would make life a much more happier place to live in but it doesn't always work that way sadly.

My gripe with all the keycap designs is: they all want to be super unique, but completely ignore the huge amount of people that just want to make their normal keyboard sound better without losing anything. Not everyone is into changing key location, losing backlight, losing a massive amount of usable keys or having proper symbols on it that actually have any use for all the keys, where combinations with shift, ctrl, altGr are common. Seriously, I pretty much never see any full-scale keycap sets (and even worse, if you have some additional buttons).
I would have bought the genuine GMK or other high quality keycaps but it's to expensive to our country. It's 1 US Dollar to 4 Ringgit Malaysia. A full GMK keycap set also cost half of my monthly payment. Me as a designer I would like to support other artist if I'm able to so I won't push myself just to get the genuine keycaps.
I got two sets for the price of one from Drop and I'm LOVING the profile (for typing). It seems this week they have some nice discounts set up for those sets for those interested.
Gmk keycaps are a rip-off. $100+ keycaps is way too much and you can better spend that money elsewhere. If you *really* like keyboards and it makes you happy then go for it but for an average person who just wants a good economical keyboard for working there is no reason
Personally I got myself some Domikey gas attack in SA. I thought SA would take time to get used to from oem and was a bit scared I wasted the money. But for me it made no difference in typing or gaming. Great quality and price
I just bought some SA myself and I'm hoping it's the same thing for me. I don't normally game on PC and this is more for typing so I'm hoping they are a good fit for my current keeb and future build I'm buying.
6:27 Seems perfect for me in terms of form, but I wish they were black with double shot RGB compatible. Or purple and black like the Black Panther set.
Akko keycaps have been my go to since I built my first board. Overall great quality. I just have a couple complaints, number one being that out of the 4 spacebars I have used from them, 3 have had an issue with the stems of the keycap breaking on stabs, and number 2 being the shine on my WoB spacebar that formed REALLY fast after i put it on my board. I'll definitely be using them in the future, but defintely don't get them thinking you're getting a super duper high quality set (side note: ASA is fucking awesome and I wish other companies made sets in that profile)
Kinetic labs brings a lot to the community as long as you live in US or Canada. I got the milk and honey set of amazon and must say for the price I was very impressed.
You should of mentioned drop artifact bloom and cannon keys npbt. Nice pbt looks bery boring but feels very nice and still looks good. Artifact bloom in my opinion is THE budget cherry profile double shot.
Hipyo, I bought the eyooso keyboard as my first mechanical keyboard and stuffed it with cardboard and paper. Then I put in Akko CS Ocean Blues and now I have this really nice THOCKY keyboard thanks for teaching me that I do not have to spend $200 on a keyboard.
I've been using MT3 for gaming for 2 years - I have nothing to complain about. Is it tall? Yes. Do I make mistakes in typing? Yes. But I love the way the sculpt feels during gaming. I predominantly play COD and sometimes open world.
Akko, Ducky and YMDK are my recommendations for the budget end. All of them are pretty cheap, and surprisingly great quality. Pair them with a good switch and you'll have some of the deepest thock you could ever hope for.
I'd happily pay RRP for a original set, but if you literally can't buy them anywhere I'll buy a clone - It isn't my fault not enough were manufactured.
I see the oh well don't support clones debate in other hobbies and it is usually because the clones do not represent the quality that the original designer put into their product. for keycaps while there are probably some differences. if the original designer cant keep them in stock, I don't see the harm in supporting whomever you can get them from being that they are going to be of similar quality anyway, potentially cheaper, and give you the desired look you want. people need to stop acting like a color combo is a "design"
Thank you for the recommendation on the custom keycap sets through WASD! Recently got my first mechanical keyboard and a custom keycap set is exactly what I was looking for next
Buy clones, save your money. Don't get sucked into the whole drama. You'll spend 2-10 times more money on a set of "authentic" keycaps only to end up breaking one down the line and never being able to replace it. Buy clones, and enjoy the fact that even if you break a keycap and can't replace it, you only spent $20-$40.
Having used GMK Clones (particularly Aefei), I'd say they are perfectly fine and comparable to the real deal, GMK Originals are pure ripoffs Also, I totally support the purchase of clones (i hate the ridiculous prices of the group buys here and group buys there, i just want my keycaps and to use them immediately)
I don’t like buying clones but I love the gmk designs and I like PBT Keycaps more and also I just can’t justify that price. GMK is also a much bigger company than just Keycaps so I feel like GMK clones are not that bad
the 9009 blanks on kinetic lab is amazing. Don't know if that falls under clones, but I personally don't think so because there has been kat 9009, epbt 9009, gmk 9009 and a bunch of stuff
Buying a clone really isn't any different than buying a price hiked set off mechmarket, in that neither is sending your money to the creator. But one is the obviously smarter move for your wallet...
They are just keycaps people. No matter how much I like my mechanical keyboard, I am not going to spend 200+ dollars on freaking keycaps. Just buy some nice clones and move on with your life.
I mean... If they're comfortable, durable, and look the way I want them to, I don't mind paying a premium. I'm picky about how they feel, how well my backlight shows through, how the font looks, matches the color ways I want, and will last at least as long as my switches before they start showing wear.
@NitttNattt first of all.. Unless you are buying extras on top of base keycaps, they aren't even close to being 200+ dollars. My latest GMK set was about 130 euros and that's the highest quality / most expensive kind there is. There's enough normal keycaps for far below that. There's also a reason they are that expensive, it's not like they are getting mass produced for millions of people. But if you don't have the money, you don't NEED to get the more expensive kind. There's also clean sets for under 50 bucks lmao
I just wish someone made sa double shot Italian iso keycaps. I had to fall back to OEM dye sub keycaps which are more than fine but sa has a certain charm I can't resist.
@@abird720 i agree. I'm just fed up with gmk. Like wtf you spend hundreds of dollars then wait for years until you can get your hands on it. Then the set comes in flimsy low quality packaging. And then comes the after market. Not to mention the cherry interference, so f-ing infuriating, which just bumps the price of south facing kit sky high. Changing led position on a pcb during manufacturing is easy af. It's absurd how just changing the led position makes a kit almost unaffordable for most people. Maybe it's just my broke ass complaining.

Hello from New York City! Can custom keycaps be used with an old keyboards or it is recommended to buy a new mechanical keyboard? For example: using a vintage Packard Bell 5139 keyboard now. Is there a way for a newbie to start using keycaps with the OEM keyboard they already have? Thank you for informative video.

Also, I totally support the purchase of clones (i hate the ridiculous prices of the group buys here and group buys there, i just want my keycaps and to use them immediately)
You should try a bandaid mod, can't imagine how different that'd sound to foam...
Hipyo, your the best!
But one is the obviously smarter move for your wallet...
pay +100 dollars and wait months to buy bullshit abs because it's original, no thanks 😂
Someone expand on the "aether" comment at 4:20? I bought Aether Infinikeys lol
Glorious had a scandal about it
Great info. I wish I could have updated info and where I can source in Australia :)
I WAS LOOKING FOR KEYCAPS FOR MY BUILD TYTY
i feel like xda keycaps make a keyboard look more expensive that it actually is, theyve gotta be my favorite keycaps
I bought the Coral Sea and I'm happy
Got these keycaps for my first build a few months back :P
Please go over the different profiles and for different uses
I ordered first amazon keycap set literally a week ago.
The idobao keycaps and id80 sound great together

Amazing how you knew what was available in 2023 in 2021
Hi! Can you recommend a brand that makes keycaps with Cyrillic layout also ?
What is the keyboard at 4:35?
Trying to figure this out too
I like the OEM size keycaps
Thanks for making this informative videos. Just my 2 cents, I think the mirrorred words are q confusing.
Apart from that, thanks for this vid!
They are just keycaps people. No matter how much I like my mechanical keyboard, I am not going to spend 200+ dollars on freaking keycaps. Just buy some nice clones and move on with your life.
thank you someone with a brain
Ye I’m just looking for something cool, inexpensive, and effective
I mean... If they're comfortable, durable, and look the way I want them to, I don't mind paying a premium.
I'm picky about how they feel, how well my backlight shows through, how the font looks, matches the color ways I want, and will last at least as long as my switches before they start showing wear.
It's literally part of the hobby. Or are you going to put a Volvo motor in a JDM car as well 😂
@NitttNattt first of all..
I love the text animations lol
Howdy hey Hipyo! Can you please test the idobao black Sakura keycaps sometimes?
I need your opinion on a key cap set please, you didn’t go over it and it’s the only one I found that fits my style, please respond
I just wish someone made sa double shot Italian iso keycaps. I had to fall back to OEM dye sub keycaps which are more than fine but sa has a certain charm I can't resist.
With the state of the keycap market right now, buying clones straight up gives a much better shopping experience then buying official sets.
Yeah, I almost closed the video when he started preaching about clones. Colorways are not art in my opinion.
@@abird720 novelties are indisputably art, and any clones of those should be vilified. I think you should hear hipyo out from his experiences designing IFK Delight. Do you think people should clone his set?
@@abird720 agree, and some of the “clone” sets he’s shading Akko for use the normal Akko novelties, just have similar colorways. They even have some of their own designs and collaboration sets, and make them in different profiles…
stealing full designs is one thing, like novelties and full keyboard art etc; but colorways i can’t justify seeing a copyright on
Hello from New York City!
Is there any way you could make a starter playlist for people interested in building custom keyboards?
Awesome!
How do keycaps named that are factory glossy and polished? I love my 20yo Matsushita keyboard but it's broken now. I wish to replicate the keys style like they're in use for a looong time on a new one.
I'll be glad for your answer.
This is a great question! I'd be glad to go into depth on my experience shining keycaps more on Discord, feel free to join the Hipyo server and ping me and I can chat with you about this.
Cannon Keys has some very nice PBT keycaps.
Is there any shine through spherical keycaps. Also do they have in cherry and OEM profile?. Been looking in the internet, thanks in advance for the info.
Hi Hipyo, what keyboard is that (purple color and having several dedicated keys located at the most left hand side) showing up at 4:30?
Hey hipyo! I know you’re not Amazon’s biggest fan when it comes to keycaps, but would you consider reviewing Mistel PBT keycaps from Amazon? They’re doubleshot, clean looking caps with a few different colour options and are £50 :)
Lol wathing this to help me build my redragon k556 that im putting in ktt kang whites and now im looking for some good caps with deep sounds
Opinion on royal flush gaming keycaps? Company started a year ago
