One of my favorite Stones songs. Not sure why they thought they needed anyone else on lead, Richards did just fine.
Keith is the greatest. In my 70 plus yrs I do not now & never have played guitar, but like most music lovers, you appreciate excellence.
This is excellence.
People don't realise, half of the tone is the compressor/limiter that was used on the bass, giving it that tight smacky sound. Phenomenal and legendary!
One of the coolest base lines ever.
Flatwounds on a P-Bass played with a pick is an amazing combination.
Bass is such a sexy instrument; in Keith’s hands, it flys on its own…it’s in the rhythm…whew!
just the bass the song still works
I love the sound of this 1959 Fender Precision Bass. i love it!!!!
During the 80s, I listened to this tape a lot in my Walkman®. Sometimes I played this song over and over again, just to hear that bass. The piano was also wonderful.
Pendant les 80s , J'ai beaucoup écouté cette cassette dans mon Walkman® . Parfois je repassais ce morceau en boucle , uniquement pour entendre cette basse. Le piano aussi était merveilleux.
Me too! I had a silver Sony Walkman and one time caught the train from Brisbane to Innisfail in Queensland Australia, which is a 36-hour trip. I only had one cassette, Rolled Gold which was a best of, and this song got an absolute flogging. Gimme Shelter and Sympathy are the Stones's best songs.
Kieth played some of the best basslines. simple but very effective. Especially this song and "Jumping Jack Flash"
I didn't know that he played bass on Jumping Jack Flash.
Yeah for sure he played killer bass on both of those tracks.
And most of the songs where he sings lead as well.
Always LOVED that first lead guitar lick!
Brilliant tune even with only bass and guitar.
Thanks so much for these isolated tracks. Please do more of these.
So snappy! He hears the whole thing in his head, and punches it up real hard. 😮
Out of this world.
Utterly fantastic
Keef has always had that Funk and soul in his playing. Greatest Rhythm player of all time and the coolest.
In your opinion.
I know Richards did a lot of lead work when Brian got more involved with the sitar and other unusual instruments. And he did some of the most iconic solos. But on the whole, do you think he preferred to be on rhythm guitar, as Mick Taylor and Ron Wood later became the band's lead guitarist?
Micky T
Keith is 100% in his element when he's hammering out those ever so tasty syncopated rhythm patterns. Best in the business at it IMO, and he always seems to be having a blast doing it too.
His rhythm playing REALLY shines on his work with the X-Pensive Winos.
See 'Eileen' and 'Wicked as it Seems'
Keith is Amazing😮
Is it just me or does it sound as if Iggy Pop's Lust For Life 'borrowed' a lot from this bassline?
maybe
Probably admiration for the original bass line and used it as motivation like tribute
Very. Lol
I'd say it can be traced more directly back to You Can't Hurry Love, honestly.
Weird clicks and abrupt edits on the bass. I had no idea how raw it was by listening to the final mix, which is a work of genius.
He should have recorded a full album by himself, playing acoustic and electric guitars, bass and drums. No doubt he would have recorded a great blues album like that. He still can do it.
and piano!!
In their heydays when Brian disappeared he did just that. Except for drums as he loved to play with Charlie or whoever was around (Jimmy Miller on Happy).
Several tracks on guitar and as Bill Wyman said: if you got the Bassline down just do it.
This line made me pick up a bass. But mostly I’m a guitar player.
I been "jammin" this tune the last few weeks with a guitar player. I wasnt happy with my strumming pattern.
I love this....especially when he plays that "B".........it sounds so wrong to my ear. Sounds like it is flat....but yet, i love the sound of it.
Goosebumps!

Beautiful. Yes, as someone else said please do more! How about isolated bass track on Cream's Badge?
If that is the actual original track the tone is amazing. Props to Glyn Johns if he was the engineer
thanks for this boss
When that solo starts I swear the fkin devil just walked into the studio.
Gives me the chills every time I hear it. Absolute perfection.
So agree; fantastic player!
You got it-that piercing guitar is like the devil looking right through you
I still believe it to be the finest guitar solo in history.
@@Thompson-Gunner343You could be right. Let's wait for someone to comment that Eric Clapton has done something better 😅
Keith played this base line
only Keith could play that.
Cool pick bass line.... Sounds too twangy tho... Where's Bill Wyman..?? I do like it when Keith strums a little bit... That Fender... 😊 Finger picking good, like Geezer Butler or Jack Bruce... John Paul Jones ❤❤❤
Bill’s on maracas
When he came up with that Bill said: if you got it down you play it.
Bill would have done it different for sure.
Does anyone know what bass this is? I know it’s a p bass, but what is the exact name?
Fender Precision
Oh, I forgot to say, I have the Rolling Stones Rock n Roll Circus here, on DVD, Keith plays bass with The Dirty Mac, John Lennon on rhythm, Eric Clapton on lead, John Mitch Mitchell on drums... "Sad and Lonely .." I'm lucky to have that concert on DVD... I see Brian Jones... Before he was murdered... He was the Stones... Great concert DVD... ❤❤ You can see Tony Iommi playing with Jethro Tull, he went back to Sabbath, and all good... Great concert... But the Stones got the shits because their guest bands blew them off the stage.... 😂 Like The Who.... Taj Mahal... Tull.... Dirty Mac....
BS the Stones played a fantastic version of "Sympathy for the Devil". i don't know why they hold the show back, maybe royalty-problems.
Flatwound strings for sure
Keith rates himself a better bass player than guitarist.
Never heard or read him rating his playing.
He played pretty sloppy but he came up with some great licks.

can you do shattered
It’s on my list of Stones songs
What was Bill playin on this track?
Shekeres.
Nothing. He's taking his afternoon nap.
Als die Stones im Zenit waren und Keith noch halbwegs Herr seiner Sinne bzw. seines Verstandes.
Beste Zeit 1967-1975.
Spätestens nach "Tattoo You" waren sie fertig.
