John Barry became great friends with Deborah Raffin and her producer husband after working on this film. Pity Barry didn't arrange and produce this version with Raffin. Barry's original choice for the vocal was Karen Carpenter, however the record company insisted Lyn Paul sing SAIL THE SUMMER WINDS in the movie due to her enormous success with The New Seekers at the time.
This is one of my all-time favourite Barry songs along with 'Play It Again' and 'Good Times Are Coming'. Splendidly sung by Debbie here and a terrific arrangement. Don't think it beats the Paul original though. As Robert wood says, Barry became great friends with Deborah and scored a few more of her films: Willa (TV Movie - 1979) / Touched By Love (1980) and was originally lined up to score 'Dance Of The Dwarfs' in 1983. She was only 59 when she died. Such a beautiful woman and actress. This track / single was taken from an LP she recorded for the Japanese market in 1977. The lovely arrangement is by the great Perry Botkin Jnr.
Different, but not a patch on the superb and best version by LYN PAUL. The song nominated for a Golden Globe Award deserved to be a huge hit. Lyn Paul spent 18 weeks just outside of the UK Top 50, peaking at No 51. RIP Deborah, beautiful film!
Difficult to believe the origianal didn't at least break the top forty , in the UK . I remember it well as a twelve year old. Always loved the song from the first time I heard it.
Thanks for that confirmation Phil. I always knew it had sold quite well because there were always lots of copies foating around in second hand shops later. it's one of my top 3 Barry songs. hard to believe it never charted as it was played 'inside cinema' too.
what a news, Karen was the first choice. From the feeling of the song, Karen's voice fits well, even I can tell. This song would have been sounded like "All you get from love is a love song". I personally think these two songs have similar feeling.
It's a mediocre interpretation of a really good song but check the original version from the film soundtrack of 'The Dove' by Lyn Paul which made it a beautiful song, thank you Lyn Paul, Don Black and John Barry.
@@bondbrookebond No, I didn't but thanks for the advance warning. John Barry is clearly brilliant, have you heard/followed Lyn Paul over the years?, she's got a great voice and there are some stunning recordings out there, worth checking out 😊
@@bondbrookebond Good morning B**3, do you know if "Lolita" is a transfer of the limited release LP from way back when, which in turn was taken from a pretty bad recording of the musical play?
@@memoriesarewhatmakeuswhowe6820 This new cd recording contains the complete show recordings from what is believed to be from a possible 1st generation soundboard tape. It includes all the dialogue separated into individual tracks. That Blue Pear album released some years back was a copy of a copy and lacked somewhat in sound quality. There are no unreleased songs on this new cd, but I have a couple from the Philadelphia show that I will put up one day, that's if the cdr they are on still plays? Hope this helps.
Ive been looking for this song for over 30 years.. just magic
Had a crush on gorgeous Deborah. RIP Deborah!

Nice version with a few different inflections which sound good.
RIP Deborah
Decent cover.

I so agree, love the original also. I am a massive Barry fan myself, did you know Lolita is coming on cd?

@@bondbrookebond I have Barry's "Lolita" on LP record. I too will want the CD and I hope it will have additional songs on it.
