I've done hula and tahitian my entire life and I gotta say I'm definitely impressed. They had less than a week to learn tahitian and its probably their first time learning this style of dancing, I think they did a great job. Tahitian requires so much control and it takes years to perfect. good job!
Ebonee A. Yes, I did hula got years growing up in Cali and I was DEFINITELY impressed with how they did and for a competition on TV! I would not have the nerves. So glad to see on mainstream TV.
This was WONDERFUL. I remember the judges being so ridiculous for this performance, which was atrocious. This woman learned the basic Tahitian shake in ONE WEEK. Most women learning how to do Tahitian dances can barely move their knees or walk correctly after a week. She did a damn good job.
Only people who have actually done Tahitian or poly people who grow up in the community and know how hard it is to do this type of dancing. To learn this in a week and she did this well I can't even tell you guys how impressive that is.
The guy is actually POLYNESIAN. The girl was the one being judged. The girl did a great job considering that she learnt how to shake in one week. Even Tahitians have trouble learning at first in one week. Tahitian shaking takes years to perfect.
Yoso Masive your right. Im tahitian and it took me almost a year to perfect my fast shaking cause i was always taught to take it slow. But im glad i got it down tho.
They did a very good job With their Tahitian dance, it's really hard work to dance Tahitian, I'm still working on my dance!!! my wife is from bora bora her culture is very beautiful & wonderful people on all of the Tahiti islands, Lauren & Mark They both did"""Awesome""" It was really nice to see a Tahitian dance on the All Star Show
I grew up doing hula because my lola taught that and Tahitian dance. The amount of technical skill Lauren had to pull off in such a short amount of time is seriously impressive!!!
1. Ones race or ethnicity has nothing to do with the ability to learn or be good at other cultural dances different than your own. It’s a huge misconception that just because you are Poly you’d be a natural. Nope. Yes you have an advantage because it may be your culture, but it doesn’t make you better as it is defined by passion and talent. Humility is a trait neglected by many a dancer! Also being Samoan/Tongan/Maori/Kana Maoli doesn’t automatically make you Tahitian just because you belong to the same continent. It’s like I would claim any other European culture as my own just because I am Norwegian. Doesn’t work like that, don’t get it twisted. 2. My whole issue with this segment was: “why have Ori Tahiti on the show, if you can’t provide anyone who is competent to judge it based on proper knowledge of the dance and culture?.
The way it was explained to me growing up (bc ‘Ori Tahiti is practiced in most islands) is that our ancestors all came from Tahiti which is why you can see some cultural parallels. However, I agree! I have Aunts who came straight from the Islands but were never great at dancing.
the female contestant did amazing!!!! her shaking was on her point :) great to see polynesian dancing in these competitions! holy and i didnt even recognise that she was d-trix's girlfriend, great job lauren!!
Oh yes. Let's all get offended because people are enjoying other people's cultures. You don't see me complaining about the fact that people dance all sorts of spanish dances like salsa pretty much everywhere now (I'm spanish) We will all remain divided if you strictly keep culture within your own. If you let others learn and show others while allowing them to embrace it or try it out, then people can be educated instead of remaining in the dark about it.
Wow! - this is a traditonal dance by the poeple of Tahiti - it is their culture, their identity and have learned through from their ancestors to this day - one culture im sure they are proud of. As for Lauen and Mark, i think they did extremely well considering they learned this within hours/days. Im sure the poeple of Tahiti do not find this offensive but knowing that their culture is fully admired by people from all walks of life and are committed to share their culture with the outside world! - Peace!
DAMN me being from hawaii lookin at the girl who looks liike she's been doing this for years like ._. while my ancestors lookin over my shoulder at the screen and giving me side eye for dishonoring them PROPS sis. you got the hip movements DOWN
Loni Vega Your last name is Vega. You're washed, probably a Filipino Hawaiian. You're not an Islander, you're Asian. I'm from the Pacific Islands, and she aced this dance. Stop spreading the hate.
Wow you are uneducated. When a woman marries her last name changes. In other words my husband is Islander, from Puerto Rico. But you probably think islander is only those from the pacific. The world is bigger than you think.
Loni Vega Puerto Ricans are Latino, and they don't fall under the Pacific Islander minority. Besides, this isn't a Puerto Rican dance, this is a South Pacific Islander Tahitian dance, origins not in Latin America, BUT IN THE SOUTH PACIFIC ISLANDS. Everyone can live and be from an island, but not everyone is ETHNICALLY a PACIFIC ISLANDER. Learn a little, bye.
Corn is Best Just to add on the notes here, if you go by the word: “pacific islander” Filipinos are indeed one. The Philippines which consists of 7107 islands lay in the pacific ocean. Being Polynesian isn’t a race. You say she should get educated yet your whole comment tirade reeks of racism, prejudice and ignorance. I’ve notice this hatred against my kind in not just the Ori community in the US, when ironically most of those who make up the groups are pinoy, but within Polynesia. I feel sorry for you that you hide behind hate and ignorance, when the truth is far from it. Not only Filipinos, tho we are not one people, but different ethnic, and tribal groups as well as indigenous, but the rest of SEA: Indonesia, Malaysia and Taiwan, we are all one. As a matter of fact together with Polynesia we are all related through our Austronesian heritage, and whether you believe it or not, we do share the same DNA, ancestors, history, even same language family tree, and are connected to the sea. Your plants an animals came from Asia which is proven through DNA tracing. The traditions of how to make lei, hei, ei are from Asia. Asia is not a country, but a continent, most diverse in fact. Whitewashed? You are the one poisoned by colonial brainwash!
Hawaiians are polynesian, its just that america destroyed almost all of their culture and now they are confused with asians cuz of the immigrant migration due to the sugar cane and coffee farms. Pretty sad, their last remaining queen got ovethrown by us businessmen and us marines
Gille87 - No bitch, Austronesian is a made up theory, it never existed. Polynesians are real tho. Polynesians ruled and populated the entire Pacific along with the Melanesians, Polynesians and Melanesians are the two oldest cultures in the Pacific. Filipinos and the rest of so called "south sea Asia" all have traces of Polynesian DNA due to the fact Polynesians settled their long b4 their blood started being diluted by mixing with the Asians who came later on. Filipinos are Actually Micronesians, Micronesians are Polynesians who mixed have mixed with Malay Asians and Melanesians.
@kuluwaimacad- stop being stingy lmao. I'm a Polynesian myself and do u even know that a Tahitian lady is the one that choreographed this one? She's in the audience. SMDH.
Hi I’m currently in the running for the Miss Filipina Teen International pageant and for the talent competition I would love to represent the Tahitian culture, so would it be okay if use this routine/music?
Its a pareo [other names: lava lava cloth, sarong , for those of us who dance we usually have several ay home for practicing Traditional Arts of the Ori Tahiti Islander's dancing. Usually we tie a silk leaf around our hips over the Pareo when doing the dances. Those pareo are always brightly coloured as the dances are highly energetic.
Mark here is dancing as the Warrior of the Night, and Lauren is dancing as the Maiden of the Day. Its a romantic dance of Night and Day. Lauren is wearing feathers around her yellow pareo tie skirt. Usually leaves are tied around our skirts [a pareo cloth tied at the side of our hips]
I'm not surprised they did as well as they did... They had some of the greatest coaches in the Polynesian dancing Community by having Nonosina come and help them, you won't find a better Tahitian group then Nonosina other than going to the actual island of Tahiti.
I listen comparetion of Polynesian dance is The same be a African twerken... I don't think so ... I hab Respect vor African music, culture, dance, people,... but I love my Roots and I 'm Proud about this... Maori Girl to be... Aloha, Iorana, Iaorana te Maori ta' a to'a....
the only Tahitian dance is in people with Tahitian Blood since they are the only Polynesians to dance this way, I take you are Hawaiian since you used the word haoles and your name, tradition Hawaiian dance is nothing like Tahitian. and you should know that. I lived in Tahiti for 15 years, Hawaii 3, Dance groups would make fun of white people (Popa'a) all the time getting them up to dance. lighten up
I know the Tahitian dance is part of a culture because I've done a Tahitian dance before. They only did what they told. They also had a short amount of time to do this too. Now, let's say you weren't a part of the culture and you knew NOTHING about it like they did. I don't think they wanted to offend your culture, but hey, at least they tried their best. Stop complaining, it's not like they wanted to embarrass you guys.
you're offended? by what ? I thought it was excellent considering they had never done it probably never seen it and about 3 days to make it work. sheesh what do you want?
I have say I’ve seen better. Considering they had a week to learn this, I’d give them a 4. My sister-in-law was a professional Tahitian dancer who taught many women to compete professionally
THIS IS A DISGRACE TO MY CULTURE....PLEASE LET US ISLANDERS HANDLE OUR DANCES....OR MAYBE YOU SHOULD OF HAD PROPER TRAINING BEFORE YOU MADE OUR POLYNESIAN CULTURE LOOK BAD...THIS IS NOT TRUE POLYNESIAN PEOPLE.
Tf? 😑 How do we Polys look bad? Disgraced by what? No, bitch. Ya need tah stop. Aint nobody offended here but you. Check the hate, sis. Take it somewhere else.

Keeping your shoulders still is a lot of hard work
I bet Mark had done it before. I can't remember if he is Hawaiian or Japanese or both?
I might be thinking of Marko.
I might be a Samoan but hey!!!they finally represented some part of the Polynesians!!great job guys!!!cheeehoooo
Knowing they had one week to rehearse, this was good!!! Y'all don't know how hard doing Tahitian dances are so mad props!!!!
This was WONDERFUL. I remember the judges being so ridiculous for this performance, which was atrocious. This woman learned the basic Tahitian shake in ONE WEEK. Most women learning how to do Tahitian dances can barely move their knees or walk correctly after a week. She did a damn good job.
Napalm Fairy That's cause they were unfit to begin with.I caught on pretty quickly and walked fine after every session.
@@carolinesalvI know your comment was 7 years ago but it’s just as annoying now as it was then. Please, tell us more about how superior you are
As a Pacific Islander who grew up doing mainly Ori Tahiti I AM PROUD AND IMPRESSED
Only people who have actually done Tahitian or poly people who grow up in the community and know how hard it is to do this type of dancing. To learn this in a week and she did this well I can't even tell you guys how impressive that is.

Lol just bc he's Polynesian (hapa) doesn't make u a pro. They did really good for being their first...
I didn't say anything about being pro
Yoso Masive your right. Im tahitian and it took me almost a year to perfect my fast shaking cause i was always taught to take it slow. But im glad i got it down tho.
Yoso Masive - The guys Hawaiian. Which is why his hip movements was great. Hawaiian male dances is like doing P90x
And she won the season.

So many years later, still on my mind
Perfect that Mark danced this especially since he's from the islands
This was such a random genre but I loved it!

100% agree with part 1. I guess they wanted to do something different and hot suprised and just have her good reviews
Gille87 I’m part Hawaiian and I’m not that associated with being a good hula dancer 😅
Kanaka Maoli are part Tahitian....
The way it was explained to me growing up (bc ‘Ori Tahiti is practiced in most islands) is that our ancestors all came from Tahiti which is why you can see some cultural parallels. However, I agree! I have Aunts who came straight from the Islands but were never great at dancing.

I kno right!
In that case Argentina should be in a war with every country in the world because of tango.
Salsa is not a Spanish dance. It's an Afro-Cuban dance. Flamenco is a Spanish dance.
