it did help me find the oil filter and how to replace it. I was wondering what you think. If you leave the fill cap on, will the oil not shoot out so far when removing the plug?

Thanks for the video. I've been changing my oil for the last 30 years and never had a vehicle with this style filter. It seems pretty simple to replace.
Same set up your basically changing the paper out in a traditional sealed can. I actually prefer this and like to do before dropping the drain plug. With the filter out I loosen the drain plug. Not sure if any more drains out this way. But in a can style if you puncture a hole at the bottom with it tipped upside down more will drain out. We were required to do this in a repair shop when performing a LOF. Great video and I’m glad I traded my 2014 Silverado for this model of truck beats buying 8.5qts of oil, with fighting the oil splashing everywhere.
Just finished changing the oil. Glad I did it. I have the free life time oil change but after a year of owning my truck I realized they’ve been using cheap ass 0w20 conventional oil. Followed all the steps & im now a subscriber. Will be doing rear differential next. Thanks 🤙🏼

When doing your rear diff, i highly suggest using the OEM fluid that does not have the LS modifier. In my rear diff video I used mobil1 that has the LS modifier and I was having issues with my rear end not acting correct. So I drained it and put the OEM fluid in and it was perfect after that. Great video! Regarding the random comments about reinstalling the new oil filter (housing/cap) on these motors, everyone needs to understand......oil filters have always been intended to be 'hand tight' ... by which to be reversed, also means, 'hand Un-tight' lol. A person is supposed to put a little swipe of oil on the new o-ring of any oil filter, put it on with your hand....and then later when the time comes, take it back off with your hand to replace it again! The only reason oil filter wrenches were even invented was to (remove) wrongfully installed filters! In this case, the engineers know it's difficult for an individual to reach a hand down there, so they gave you the 24mm nut to turn it, (not drive it) on and off from the 10 or so inches above it ....... so it's all about paying attention to the draw down and integrity of the o-ring with a moderate amount of forearm strength and 'common sense' measurement while using whatever ratchet or hand device you're using! *Always look under the vehicle and around the oil filter housing immediately upon start up to verify for no gushers!
Very helpful! I could not find the filter. On another note on cars with an internal oil filter the oil drain plug should be left out until the oil filter is removed. Most of the time some more oil will drain out, sometimes a significant amount.
Good to know. A little more simple to change filter. My 2005 Colorado I had to crawl on my back under front end to take the filter out being careful not to tip the filter on the way. sometimes it can be a little messy. I didn't have to jack the truck up for that. I haven't got to my 1st oil change on my 2019 Chevy Colorado Z71 yet.
Bought new 2019 model. Looked at the filter in the store and thought WTH. Just a paper filter. Thanks for showing me where it is located cause I never would have found it. Between the filter and no gas cap, totally new for me.
Funny thing, I just changed the oil in my Colorado a few weeks ago. I used a torque wrench to tighten the filter housing to 25 newton meters or 18 ft lbs. It was fairly easy. No jacking of the vehicle needed. Did it right inside my garage.
Oil filter is on the right side of the motor. Your battery bracket hold the middle of the battery down it’s 6-8 inches from the middle of that bracket and straight down. Black cover with the bolt built into it. 15/16 socket.
Had a 2010 with the quirky 3.7L i5. Great truck had it for six years no issues, the oil change was simpler since it had an actual oil filter. I changed to a 2017 and didn't do an oil change yet but will need one soon. Thanks for the info on how to change the oil. I do my oil in the summer and take it in to have it changed in the winter. Looks like it takes the same amount of oil as the 3.7L 5 cylinder.
I recently bought one of these trucks and will be doing the oil change soon. I can’t even see the oil filter housing without standing on something. I wish it wasn’t so deep in there. Otherwise it doesn’t look like a bad job.

@@fondupot You're right, actual 24 mm = 0.94" whereas 15/16"=0.9375"; however, in my opinion, 0.025" isn't a significant difference on this light of a torque.
I didn't have to jack it up with the 2005 but it was a little tight but I managed without a jack. The 2019 Colorado Z71 will be a real cinch. I do jack the rear up so I can grease the Universal Joints. Since this is a New truck, it probably doesn't have grease fittings.
Quick question, when you put the new oil filter in and tighten it all the way with your hand how many turns do you do with the ratchet, I hand tightened it as tight as I could, and then maybe did a half turn with the ratchet. I just wanna make sure I’m not tightening it down too much.
The cover should be flush with the housing that the filter slides into. If you reach down and feel a gap then you gotta keep going. But it doesn’t require a lot of torque. You should be able to feel the ratchet stop when it’s flush.
Couple tips - Put a fumoto oil drain valve on the truck and it makes it super simple to change the oil. Write 6QTs on the cap so you don’t have to look it up every time. Can also get a funnel that screws into you oil fill plug so it doesn’t flop around while you are filling the engine back up.

@@fondupot The oil you use says 10,000 miles protection guaranteed but my truck hits about 6000 and says to change it. what's the deal? Also did you really change your oil at 85% or did you reset it early to avoid the "nag" to get more life out of the oil?
Mobil1 oil says it can go 10k miles. But the OLM son the vehicle is controlled by the computer. It usually ended up being around 5000-6000 miles when I would change the oil. It said 85% because in accidentally reset it a few weeks earlier. But I keep track of the mileage for oil changes too. So I knew it was time to change it.
You wouldn't believe how hard I'm twisting on it, even tried using an electric impact driver and it still won't budge, insane. First oil change outside the free service from the dealership. They managed to get it seized on there somehow.
@@LukeTeel Wow that's crazy. It should NOT be that tight by any means. Glad you got it worked out, but when you reinstall the cap it just needs to be snug, I think the spec is 18 ft/lbs. It's not a lot.
I had the same issue when I went to a valvoline for oil change after a previous dealer oil change. Valvoline couldn’t get the filter off and were afraid of breaking it, went back to dealer for one last oil change then no more from them.
Yea I did one. Look up my newer video showing oil change on my GMC Canyon. But I don’t have it installed anymore because I have a drain valve installed now.

Changed oil today but didn't have right driver to get oil filter off and changed. Thoughts or recommendations on how concerned I should be and how quickly I should change filter? Oil change was 5k from last change. 70k total miles roughly.
If you dont change that oil filter it will literally fall apart... i have seen cars come into shop with these filters after not changing this type of filter... had to pick the filter pieces out of the filter housing.
Been a while since I've done my own oil change. We always had the filter in the canister under down by the oil pan. Curious if you need to replace that gasket on the cap everytime you change the filter. Thanks and great video!
Yea canister filters are still a thing. This cartridge style was new for me though. And yea the gasket gets changed on the oil filter cap each time. Thanks for watching.
Hello, thanks for making this video. Ive just purchased 2016 Colorado with 41k miles. It says oil change needed and i have code p0300 random multiple misfire detected. Do have any idea what might be. I know some peope say it kight be spark plugs or bad batter( low amps) and bunch or other stuff. My battery has corrosion on one of the terminals. Thanks
Do an oil change and start with replacing the battery. If it’s the original battery it definitely needs to be replaced. Clean up the terminals and use some dielectric grease when you reinstall everything. See if that clears your code.
So would it have that much trouble to watch you burn your wrist and skin your knuckles getting that oil filter out of the least accessible place on the entire engine?
This is a simple questions, but indications on the knob are making me question the normal. Is the oil filter cap lefty loosely, righty tighty? There is an arrow on the top that shows turn to right, but nothing else. The dealership did the last change and the top is on so tight, it won't budge. Made me start thinking, maybe I'm turning it the wrong way. I'm trying to take it off, by turning the cap counter clockwise. Is that correct?
Yes it’s standard threads. Use a longer ratchet to get more leverage. Lefty loosy. Righty tighty. This is actually the second comment I’ve gotten from someone in the past week saying they couldn’t get the oil filter cap off. You just need more leverage.
1) thanks for doing this. I haven't changed my own oil in years I'm embarrassed to say, but good to see the filters have gotten a little easier. 2) You mentioned this was for 2017s and newer. I have a 2016 and it all looks the same. Do you know what the differences are?
The 2015-2016 V6 is actually a totally different motor than the 2017+. The filter is a different part number on 2016's. But otherwise the process is identical. I have links to the part numbers in the video description. Thanks for watching! Glad to help. Good luck!
2015-16 oil filter housing is all metal. Torque specs are a little different. Other than that pretty much the same everything is in the same locations as this vehicle. I torque the drain plug and the oil filter cap to 20 pounds I think the oil filter cap only calls for 18 pounds but my cheap torque wrench doesn’t have fine increments. Mine is a 2015 v6
I was wondering if you use a resetting tool for the TPM system when you rotate tires. Now that my free oil changes have expired on my 2015 Colorado I'm going to go back to changing my own oil and doing rotations. I've purchased a resetting tool on Amazon but haven't used it yet and am hoping it works OK. Your thoughts?
David Szakacs I don’t own a TPMS recalibration tool. I think they are quite expensive. I take my vehicle to Discount Tire (America’s Tire) and they balance and rotate for free.
I have also noticed that last 2 oil changes I needed to put closer to 6.5 qts...and it’s not consuming any oil between changes...I could probably get away with the 6qts, but after checking the level it’s slightly lower than the full mark
Soak your rag in brake cleaner then thoroughly wipe off the dipstick. You will get a accurate measurement. It needs to be in the hash marks it’s not an exact.
@@FEDUPDON dexos2 is just a specification not a brand.. Lots of oils have it. Mobil1. Valvoline. Pennzoil. Royal Purple. Quaker State. Just to name a few of the big brands, are all dexos2 approved.
@@FEDUPDON most bottles will say it somewhere on the label yes. Usually right on the front. Not sure what the low ash term means. But I looked up Mobil1 and it says it is low ash.
The 2.5L 4 cylinder engine has a spin-on filter underneath the engine. It’s not like the V6 at all. And I believe it has a different oil capacity as well.
I changed my oil today but when I clipped in the new filter to the cap I feel like it was flimsy. Clipped in but not tight and moved around a bit. Should I be worried?
@@fondupot I'm going to remove the filter cap today and re install it to see if maybe I did not clip it proper. I'm assuming I can remove the filter without having to drain the oil all over again?
I just did it. When I put 6 quarts back in the dipstick is read its only half full. Did you add more oil. I don't want to overfill it,because to much oil is as bad as not enough.
Good how-to video. GM could have done a much better job of mounting that oil filter in a easier to get location. Jeep did it perfectly on my '15 Cherokee 3.2L V6. On the very top of the engine, just pop off the engine cover to access.
Beats dealing with Chrysler’s coolant leaks. And intermittent dying in flight. Have not dealt with this engine, I hope it’s good for you and they are better then the penstars and their old 3.8 v6’s.

On my 3rd oil change on my ZR2 V6, and just noticed the valve that goes into the middle of the oil filter is loose and spins freely...can someone confirm that is normal...thanks
Quick question. Can anyone confirm if the factory oil pan has a helicoil? The dealership told my father in law that he needs a new oil pan cause the helicol is stripped. I argued and said theres no helicoil on the factory pan, and that a helicoil is a repair that they probably did. Long story short we went back and forth and they agreed to change the oil pan at their cost
It really depends on the Oil Life Percentage. It monitors the engines running time to get the best longevity out of the oil. I typically change mine when the OLM is around 10%. That usually is around 6000-6500 miles. 9000 miles is too long, in my opinion.
I usually change it on my Colorado at 7000 miles. It's around 10-15% left. As it gets older you want to change it sooner. I wouldn't go to 9000, that's too high.

On this vehicle, the oil filter will literally tighten to a point where it spots and is completely bottomed out, no need to tighten past that

You can switch whenever. I’ve been using the Mobil1 since I took ownership of this truck with 4000 miles.

Wix and AcDelco filters are the only filters i ever use.

You wouldn't believe how hard I'm twisting on it, even tried using an electric impact driver and it still won't budge, insane. First oil change outside the free service from the dealership. They managed to get it seized on there somehow.
Ended up using an awkward combination of extensions and adapters with the Dewalt 20v impact. Appreciate the help,
@@LukeTeel Wow that's crazy. It should NOT be that tight by any means. Glad you got it worked out, but when you reinstall the cap it just needs to be snug, I think the spec is 18 ft/lbs. It's not a lot.
I had the same issue when I went to a valvoline for oil change after a previous dealer oil change. Valvoline couldn’t get the filter off and were afraid of breaking it, went back to dealer for one last oil change then no more from them.
did you ever do the magnetic drain plug? If so, what is your opinion of it, as it seems to lack the rubber internal gasket the OEM one had.
Yea I did one. Look up my newer video showing oil change on my GMC Canyon. But I don’t have it installed anymore because I have a drain valve installed now.

First nice weather here in a while, so it's oil change time for my 2018 Z71, so I needed to watch your video for a quick brush up on where everything was, LOL, in the engine.

Changed oil today but didn't have right driver to get oil filter off and changed. Thoughts or recommendations on how concerned I should be and how quickly I should change filter? Oil change was 5k from last change. 70k total miles roughly.
I would change it as soon as possible. But probably won’t hurt to go another 500-1000 miles on it.
If you dont change that oil filter it will literally fall apart... i have seen cars come into shop with these filters after not changing this type of filter... had to pick the filter pieces out of the filter housing.

Pls how do you reset the oil gauge to 100%....or that should be done by another device outside the vehicle?
It’s done in the menus on the driver info center. It’s shown how to do it at the end of the video.
Been a while since I've done my own oil change. We always had the filter in the canister under down by the oil pan. Curious if you need to replace that gasket on the cap everytime you change the filter. Thanks and great video!
Yea canister filters are still a thing. This cartridge style was new for me though. And yea the gasket gets changed on the oil filter cap each time. Thanks for watching.

Hello, thanks for making this video. Ive just purchased 2016 Colorado with 41k miles. It says oil change needed and i have code p0300 random multiple misfire detected. Do have any idea what might be. I know some peope say it kight be spark plugs or bad batter( low amps) and bunch or other stuff. My battery has corrosion on one of the terminals. Thanks
Do an oil change and start with replacing the battery. If it’s the original battery it definitely needs to be replaced. Clean up the terminals and use some dielectric grease when you reinstall everything. See if that clears your code.
So would it have that much trouble to watch you burn your wrist and skin your knuckles getting that oil filter out of the least accessible place on the entire engine?

This is a simple questions, but indications on the knob are making me question the normal. Is the oil filter cap lefty loosely, righty tighty? There is an arrow on the top that shows turn to right, but nothing else. The dealership did the last change and the top is on so tight, it won't budge. Made me start thinking, maybe I'm turning it the wrong way. I'm trying to take it off, by turning the cap counter clockwise. Is that correct?
Yes it’s standard threads. Use a longer ratchet to get more leverage. Lefty loosy. Righty tighty. This is actually the second comment I’ve gotten from someone in the past week saying they couldn’t get the oil filter cap off. You just need more leverage.

2) You mentioned this was for 2017s and newer. I have a 2016 and it all looks the same. Do you know what the differences are?
The 2015-2016 V6 is actually a totally different motor than the 2017+. The filter is a different part number on 2016's. But otherwise the process is identical. I have links to the part numbers in the video description. Thanks for watching! Glad to help. Good luck!
2015-16 oil filter housing is all metal. Torque specs are a little different. Other than that pretty much the same everything is in the same locations as this vehicle. I torque the drain plug and the oil filter cap to 20 pounds I think the oil filter cap only calls for 18 pounds but my cheap torque wrench doesn’t have fine increments. Mine is a 2015 v6
I was wondering if you use a resetting tool for the TPM system when you rotate tires. Now that my free oil changes have expired on my 2015 Colorado I'm going to go back to changing my own oil and doing rotations. I've purchased a resetting tool on Amazon but haven't used it yet and am hoping it works OK. Your thoughts?
David Szakacs I don’t own a TPMS recalibration tool. I think they are quite expensive. I take my vehicle to Discount Tire (America’s Tire) and they balance and rotate for free.

Not sure exactly. I have to stack a few on top of each other. I think a 12” extension should do the trick tho.

I have also noticed that last 2 oil changes I needed to put closer to 6.5 qts...and it’s not consuming any oil between changes...I could probably get away with the 6qts, but after checking the level it’s slightly lower than the full mark
v mann stock with 6 quarts. You could be overfilling. When the engine is warm it should read at the full mark.
Soak your rag in brake cleaner then thoroughly wipe off the dipstick. You will get a accurate measurement. It needs to be in the hash marks it’s not an exact.
What oil do you recommend for a truck in central Texas
I've used Mobil1 in my trucks for years. Hasn't proven me wrong yet. My truck had the 3.6L, I used 5W30.

@@FEDUPDON dexos2 is just a specification not a brand.. Lots of oils have it. Mobil1. Valvoline. Pennzoil. Royal Purple. Quaker State. Just to name a few of the big brands, are all dexos2 approved.

@@FEDUPDON most bottles will say it somewhere on the label yes. Usually right on the front. Not sure what the low ash term means. But I looked up Mobil1 and it says it is low ash.

I have a 2021 but it's the smaller motor. it's the same set up right just smaller size?
The 2.5L 4 cylinder engine has a spin-on filter underneath the engine. It’s not like the V6 at all. And I believe it has a different oil capacity as well.
Is this the same on a 2021 colorado Zr2 ?
Yes as long as you have a 3.6L it’s the same.

Little tip if you crack open the oil filter cap before you drain the oil, all the oil drains down with it.
I changed my oil today but when I clipped in the new filter to the cap I feel like it was flimsy. Clipped in but not tight and moved around a bit. Should I be worried?
juang lan keep an eye on your oil pressure. Did you use an AC Delco filter or some other brand? It should be tight in the cap.
@@fondupot I'm going to remove the filter cap today and re install it to see if maybe I did not clip it proper. I'm assuming I can remove the filter without having to drain the oil all over again?
You can. But there will be oil in there so be prepared for a mess.

Yes! The o-ring comes with the filter.

You should use some old oil to lube up the gasket. I did it off camera.
Is a torque wrench absolutely necessary? I don't have one.
Not 100%. Just make sure you get the drain plug nice an snug.

I just did it. When I put 6 quarts back in the dipstick is read its only half full. Did you add more oil. I don't want to overfill it,because to much oil is as bad as not enough.

Good how-to video. GM could have done a much better job of mounting that oil filter in a easier to get location. Jeep did it perfectly on my '15 Cherokee 3.2L V6. On the very top of the engine, just pop off the engine cover to access.

Beats dealing with Chrysler’s coolant leaks. And intermittent dying in flight. Have not dealt with this engine, I hope it’s good for you and they are better then the penstars and their old 3.8 v6’s.
@@fondupot The 2000 Impala puts it behind the passenger side front wheel. I sometimes wonder if the people who design some of the oil filter locations on cars have ever even popped the hood of a car outside of their CAD program.

As long as you drain the oil first you shouldn’t have any issues.
On my 3rd oil change on my ZR2 V6, and just noticed the valve that goes into the middle of the oil filter is loose and spins freely...can someone confirm that is normal...thanks

Quick question. Can anyone confirm if the factory oil pan has a helicoil? The dealership told my father in law that he needs a new oil pan cause the helicol is stripped. I argued and said theres no helicoil on the factory pan, and that a helicoil is a repair that they probably did. Long story short we went back and forth and they agreed to change the oil pan at their cost
I don’t think the factory oil pan has one. At least you got the dealer to fix it.
Should I change my oil every 4 to 5k milles ? Some tell me 3k or till 7k 😳
I go by what the oil life monitor says. I usually change mine when it gets below 20%. Usually that’s 5500-6000 miles.

Mine also.
It takes a bit for all the oil to get in the oil pan.
Check the oil again after about 10 minutes. The oil has to drain down into the pan all the way after you pour it in.

How often is the oil suppose to be changed? I took mine at 3000 miles and they wrote down on the ticket 9000 miles next oil change.
It really depends on the Oil Life Percentage. It monitors the engines running time to get the best longevity out of the oil. I typically change mine when the OLM is around 10%. That usually is around 6000-6500 miles. 9000 miles is too long, in my opinion.
I usually change it on my Colorado at 7000 miles. It's around 10-15% left. As it gets older you want to change it sooner. I wouldn't go to 9000, that's too high.
I would have gone into a little detail on how to reset the oil life in the driver display, I have no idea how to do that.
Go to Oil Life screen. Hold the button. Reset. Done. Also you can look it up in your manual.
